For a service that has only just launched, the library is truly incredible and surprisingly broad, offering a far larger selection than the majority of digital film content providers. The number of films available is set to grow exponentially, with SCEE’s President and CEO, Andrew House, telling GI that he expects “about an additional 50 movies per week” to arrive on the store. The US Video store grew 700% from its launch one year and three months ago, a promising trend which House intends to emulate. For a service that has only just launched, the library is truly incredible and... more
The suicide of German football player Robert Enke is raising questions about the immense pressure experienced by young professional athletes. We spend millions insuring their limbs, but what about protecting their minds and mental health? YPNation contributor Ewan Watt is demanding change. http://www.ypnation.net/blogs/beautiful-game-mourns
"When discussing the pressure football professionals face, most journalists discuss how many turn to alcohol or performance-enhancing drugs to raise their game. Yet very few broach the subject of mental health.
Football is a multi-trillion dollar industry. The World Cup has not only surpassed the Olympics as the most popular sporting event on the planet but it now attracts (pdf) a cumulative 26.29 billion viewers, making it the most watched television event in the world. When the commentator states a player has the eyes of the world on him, he's not exaggerating. The numbers add up to a lot of pressure."The suicide of German football player Robert Enke is raising questions about the... more
This is a true story that takes place in Germany, Lübeck area. In 1993, Kathleen, an American-singer-artist, was denied a Citibank account because she did not have a 9 to 5, that starts at 9:00 pm. and stops at 5:00 p.m.. In 2006 she applied and was told the same thing. In 2008 she was told the same thing, but this time she wrote Comptroller of the Currency (CCO) located in Texas. The customer service, overlooking national banks. All Americans are entitled to a bank account. Germany has the same law.
Kathleen was given an account, but being a foreigner and "whistle blower", payback was on the horizon.

Germany carries the European sensibility about war — forged out of centuries of violence and in particular the 20th century’s devastation — even beyond where the French, the British, the Dutch and others do.
Instead of marking Veterans Day or Armistice Day on Nov. 11, Germany on Sunday observes Volkstrauertag, its national day of mourning for soldiers and civilians alike who died in war, as well as for victims of violent oppression. German society has a complicated relationship with war, due to the Nazi era. The result has been a generally pacifist bent and an opposition to most armed conflicts; that includes majority opposition to the Afghanistan mission, which often expresses itself as a mistrust of those in uniform.
In this, there is a profound contrast to current attitudes in the United States, where even opponents of recent military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken pains to express support for the ordinary soldier who has been sent to fight and perhaps die.Germany carries the European sensibility about war — forged out of centuries of... more
BERLIN — General Motors Co. wants to move its European headquarters to Germany from Switzerland before the end of the year, an Opel spokesman said Saturday.
By moving its headquarters from Zurich to Adam Opel GmbH's Ruesselsheim headquarters in Germany, the company wants to strengthen its subsidiary Opel, spokesman Ulrich Weber said. GM's Chevrolet brand will continue to keep its headquarters in Zurich.
Last week, GM called off the planned sale of Germany-based Opel to auto-parts maker Magna (TSX:MG.A) and Russian lender Sberbank.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel had favoured that deal to save jobs. Merkel now says she wants GM to present a restructuring plan that gives Opel Europe and the German sites the chance of a good future.
Between 200 and 250 employees worked at headquarters in Zurich, according to Weber, but most have already returned to their home countries and many of whom had originally come from Ruesselsheim.BERLIN — General Motors Co. wants to move its European headquarters to Germany from... more

Snaking along, cutting through fields and streets, the 28-mile-long Berlin Wall stood as a border between East and West Berlin from 1961 to 1989. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall, a symbol of oppression since it was erected, was opened by East Germany, leading to days of emotional celebrations. The fall of the Berlin Wall set in motion several important events, including the eventual reunification of the two countries on Oct. 3, 1990; the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe; and the eventual dissolution of the Soviet bloc in December 1991.
This piece includes a number of vintage photographs, as well as a historical short film on the fall of the Berlin Wall.

On the day of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, many are asking what the fall of the Berlin Wall really meant for Russia and the rest of the world. I was three years old at the time when the Wall came down, but as I grew up to know the fall of the Berlin Wall was supposed to mean the end of the old ways things used to be: a beginning of new Russia – more liberal and free thinking. But, did the fall of the Berlin Wall really have any effect on how Russia is being perceived abroad? Has its international image improved, stayed the same or worsened ever since that Wall came down?
I was randomly browsing the English website of the Russian news agency RIA Novovsti, when I came across a little survey banner, prompting users to take a poll on what Russia’s image abroad is -- 44.5% of the respondents said “mostly good”, 33% said “mostly bad” and 22.5% said “unclear.” Given that the poll was done in English, I presume people of all the different backgrounds took the survey. So, I found it interesting that the respondents were somewhat split on what Russia’s image abroad was. I definitely think that the poll reflects the general confusion about Russia in the world today. But perhaps, as a young democracy of less than 20 years, it is only now reaching the maturity level required to start doing some serious self-reflection. And, when it will itself figure out how it wants to be perceived, perhaps everyone else will have an easier time understanding it too.
I actually don't remember where I was when I found out that the Berlin Wall fell twenty years ago. Strange because I have such clear memories of other 1980s landmarks like the Challenger explosion. What I do remember most clearly about the reunification of East and West Germany was from German class a few years later. Our textbooks were a few years old, still in good condition, but completely outpaced by the movement of history. Everyday there would be a new page we would read with an outdated cultural reference to a divided Germany. It was the first I'd ever really learned about East Germany - and it sounded terrible.
Share your memory of the fall of the Berlin Wall with us.

"GERMANY - Berlin marks 20 years since the fall of the iron curtain on Monday and the beginning of the end of communism but large crowds took to the streets in Berlin on Saturday to protest against the freedom that was won back in 1989. "
Remember the city-building simulation game SimCity? You build cities, raise taxes and occasionally call in Godzilla for some bestial destruction.
I was about 10 years old the first time I played the game. I was a God.
Later I discovered that in real life, there is nothing godlike in being a city planner. It’s probably a good thing that I can’t send in Godzilla to clean up the mistakes of my predecessors. But sometimes I still miss the days when I and my big lizard friend ruled the world.
Watching these brilliant clips from life in four German cities reminds me of why I became a city planner – And why I love it, even though I don’t get to bring Godzilla and raise the taxes.Remember the city-building simulation game SimCity? You build cities, raise taxes and... more

One of the most important events in 20th-century history may have been taking place around her, but that did not stop Angela Merkel from honouring a weekly appointment in the steam room.
Here in America, critics and audiences are under the spell of Tina Fey’s comedy 30 Rock, but over in Germany they could care less. According the THR, the U.S. series finally made its debut on German television and it bombed…bad! It’s never an easy feat to make the German people laugh, but they either hated the show or forgot it was on because the ratings were atrocious.
30 Rock debuted in Germany on Sunday via broadcaster ZDFNeo and received a ratings score of 0.0. That means less than 5,000 people tuned in to watch the antics of Tina, Alec Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan. The debut was below even the lowest forecast standards for the station, which took on the promising stateside series. ZDF, made 30 Rock the flagship in its new relaunch, which promised more cutting-edge programming for a younger demographic. Unfortunately, the target audience wasn’t interested in what they were selling.
Not to completely throw 30 Rock under the bus, other programs that debuted that night also performed poorly. The BBC comedy Taking the Flak didn’t bring in the viewers, and neither did the feature presentation of the 2006 Michael Douglas thriller, The Sentinel.
The German network used to be known as ZDFDoku, and served a niche market of documentary film fanatics, in which the channel averaged a 0.3% market share. With this rebirth, ZDFNeo has a lot of struggling to do before it becomes a contender with other major broadcasting networks. Their goal is to reach a 0.6% share by the end of next year.
This may have been a rough first outing, but there are plenty of networks that struggle in the early years of development. It’s hard to find an audience when people aren’t familiar with your brand yet. Here in America, critics and audiences are under the spell of Tina Fey’s comedy 30... more
