The ways of yesterday are the ways of today. I'm enrolled in the Jobs Now 3 program which isn't like the original Jobs Now program where you could get a job and your employer would be repaid your salary. Now it's only a $5000 endowment to the person who hires you, but it's still not bad. There is a catch now though. You have to go through the Career Development Center where they try and find you a job.The ways of yesterday are the ways of today. I'm enrolled in the Jobs Now 3... more

The Supreme Court put the brakes on a massive job discrimination lawsuit against mega-retailer Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., saying sweeping class-action status that could potentially involve hundreds of thousands of current and former female workers was simply too large.
The ruling Monday was a big victory for the nation's largest private employer, and the business community at large.
The high-profile case– perhaps the most closely watched of the high court's term– is among the most important dealing with corporate versus worker rights that the justices have ever heard, and could eventually impact nearly every private employer, large and small.

The hair thing is ridic.
An acting job that is. Thank goodness Lindsay finally got the role of Kim Gotti in the upcoming, maybe to be made, Gotti Family Jewels, or whatever the working title is. She has had more near career comebacks for someone that has not left the front pages of the tabloids for a decade. Frankly, the role of Linda Lovelace was more compelling, but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

Walmart's proven ability to crush stores owned by both Moms and Pops may make it seem like an equal-opportunity exploiter, but that's not what six women are arguing in front of the Supreme Court. Erin Gibson shines her "Modern Lady" spotlight on the legal battle that could potentially affect not just every woman, but anyone who likes to buy cheap stuff. Though it's possible this piece is simply Erin's excuse to unveil her dead-on impression of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
For good reason, no woman has ever had the balls, moxie or delusion to claim the title of "the world's premiere basic cable expert on lady stuff."
Until now.
Meet Erin Gibson. She's freakishly tall, sort of smart, and willing to do just about anything to get a bemused chuckle.
Her segment, Modern Lady, on infoMania, is dedicated to reporting and commenting on what's happening on Planet Lady.*

1 in 4 US Adults Now Have Criminal Record - Around 65 Million Citizens
In 2008, Johnny Magee, who is developmentally disabled, was laid off from his landscaping job in Livermore, California, thanks to government budget cuts. He applied for a new position as a garden center attendant at a nearby Lowe's Home Improvement store. Despite his prior experience, Magee wasn't hired. Why? A background check had turned up a 1999 misdemeanor conviction, stemming from an incident in which he unknowingly picked up a package for his uncle that contained drugs. Later that year, Magee's conviction was dismissed—but that was too late for him to get the job at Lowe's.
Sixty-five million Americans—or one in four adults—have a criminal record. But employers—including major companies like Bank of America, Omni Hotel, and Domino's Pizza—routinely post job ads on Craigslist that explicitly exclude such applicants, according to a new report conducted by the National Employment Law Center (NELP), a labor-affiliated advocacy group.
The practice appears in some cases to be against the law, and at a time of record long-term joblessness, advocates for the poor say it places yet another obstacle in front of people like Magee, who are working to get their life back on track. In addition, there's widespread agreement that helping those with criminal records to find stable employment is crucial for preventing recidivism and preventing future crime. Indeed, that's the reason that the government runs programs designed to make it easier for ex-offenders to find work.
Perhaps most important, effectively making more than one quarter of the American workforce unemployable may be an unsustainable policy for the economy as whole.
"Candidates must be able to pass: background check (no felonies or misdemeanors)," reads one ad placed by the bailed-out banking giant Bank of America. "Do not apply with any misdemeanors/felonies," warns another. And one study last year found that 92 percent of employers said they screen some or all applicants for criminal records.
Many employers use outside companies that specialize in background checks—a fast-growing industry—to help screen out applicants with criminal records. A 2009 investigation by the state of New York found that RadioShack, working with the background check firm ChoicePoint, created a system that asked applicants "Have you been convicted of a felony in the past 7 years?" and automatically rejected anyone who answered "yes."1 in 4 US Adults Now Have Criminal Record - Around 65 Million Citizens

BHUBANESHWAR, India – Indian police detained two people after an angry mob of fired workers burned to death a senior executive of a steel factory, an official said Friday.
After learning they were laid off, about a dozen workers attacked a vehicle carrying Radhey Shyam Roy as he was leaving the factory in eastern Orissa state on Thursday, dousing the Jeep with gasoline and setting it on fire, said police Superintendent Ajay Kumar Sarangi.
Two other people in the vehicle were allowed to flee but Roy, 59, was trapped inside and later died of severe burns, Sarangi said.
Police were questioning two workers and their formal arrest on murder charges was likely, Sarangi told The Associated Press. The steel factory is in Bolangir district, nearly 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state.
Incidents of industrial violence are common in India, where workers often target executives in cases of wage disputes and job losses.
In 2008, scores of dismissed employees of an Italian manufacturing company, Graziano Transmissioni India, used iron rods and wooden sticks to beat to death the company's local chief executive officer on the outskirts of New Delhi.AP... more

Unlike other nations, including the US and Ireland, which injected billions of dollars of capital into their financial institutions to keep them afloat, Iceland placed its biggest lenders in receivership. It chose not to protect creditors of the country's banks, whose assets had ballooned to US$209 billion, 11 times gross domestic product.
The crisis almost sank the country. The krona lost 58 per cent of its value by the end of November 2008, inflation reached 19 per cent in January 2009, GDP fell 7 per cent that year and the Prime Minister resigned after nationwide protests.
But with the economy projected to grow 3 per cent this year, Iceland's decision to let the banks fail is looking smart.
"Iceland did the right thing by making sure its payment systems continued to function while creditors, not the taxpayers, shouldered the losses of banks," says Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, an economics professor at Columbia University in New York. "Ireland's done all the wrong things, on the other hand. That's probably the worst model."Unlike other nations, including the US and Ireland, which injected billions of dollars... more

In a multi-year survey of 270 New York sex workers, Wired has determined that 83% of the prostitutes involved have a Facebook page and actively use it for recruiting customers. Compared to 2003, Facebook has exploded in the sex marketplace, taking a substantial bite out of other venues — such as escort agencies, strip clubs, and Craigslist.
The above graph, from Wired’s article, shows the sources of sex workers’ regular clients. What’s surprising is the rapid adoption of Facebook, which launched in 2003 but was not opened to the public until 2006. That means that in just two years, Facebook has claimed 25% of the traffic.
Also remarkable is that while sex workers were using Craigslist prior to Facebook, its use was limited and has almost completely vanished as a source. One likely theory is that Facebook has a more positive image, making customers feel safer. Also, it is less anonymous than Craigslist, giving sex workers some leverage over their clients. This may be bolstered by Wired’s observation that sex workers prefer BlackBerrys, since it gives them a professional, almost business-like appearance — perhaps the same sense provided by Facebook.
The near 50% reduction of strip club traffic and 10% reduction from escort agencies may indicate that sex workers are moving more and more from a face-to-face industry, to one with little actual personal contact in the negotiation process.
Currently, Facebook’s terms of use do not explicitly ban the solicitation of sex, though there is a blanket ban on unlawful activity, and prostitution is currently illegal in every U.S. state except Nevada. From the terms of use:
You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory.
Craigslist, conversely, has famously removed the adult services listing from its site, creating something of a defacto ban on using the website for prostitution. How or if Facebook responds to this new data will be especially interesting to industry observers.
Though interesting, the results from Wired are problematic. Firstly they represent the responses of only 270 participants, compared with over 100,000 sex workers operating in a $14 billion dollar industry. Furthermore, the study is geographically and economically limited. Though New York is large and varied, it is only one slice of America.
Though a nearly universally banned practice in this country, prostitution has always made use of legitimate, public spaces to advertise. Whether it’s street walking, or ads in the newspaper, it has been active in places were people can find it. In this light, the move to Facebook may not be so surprising.
If, and it’s a big if, these results can be regarded as representative of the sex market in the U.S. as a whole, it might indicate large shifts in the sex working landscape. America has always had a difficult relationship with the practice, begging the question: How will the nation respond if social media becomes the choice realm for prostitution?
