"Quentin Tarantino cut it close for Cannes premiere
CANNES -- Everyone is on tenterhooks ahead of Wednesday's premiere of "Inglourious Basterds," not least the stars of Quentin Tarantino's Nazi-slaying epic.
The director's mad rush to finish the film in time for Cannes has meant that virtually no one, including "Basterds" headliners, has seen the movie.
"When I arrived in Cannes and saw the posters on the Carlton Hotel and I wasn't on them I thought, 'Oh no, they've cut me out,' " German star Daniel Bruhl, one of the film's leads, told The Hollywood Reporter. "I saw Quentin, and he said he hasn't cut a minute. But I won't know what's in or out until the premiere."
The version of "Basterds" that bows in Cannes, however, is unlikely to match the one that Universal and the Weinstein Co. roll out at a multiplex near you. Wednesday's screening clocks in at 2 hours and 40 minutes -- reassuringly long for cast members worried about ending up as cutting-room dross -- but a programming challenge for distributors.
So "Basterds" in Cannes could resemble a test screening, with a leaner, perhaps meaner cut going up in August. ""Quentin Tarantino cut it close for Cannes premiere

Not since James Cameron's "I'm the King of the World" has a director gone on record proclaiming his own mastery, like a shot heard round the world.
But Lars Von Trier, in order to defend the heckle-ridden reception @ Cannes of his new film 'Antichrist,' proclaimed his own admiration of his talent as a fact.
Is he, indeed, the best film director in the world? Can he really be objective about that?
And btw, when will a woman director finally say something so crass and yet so deliciously self-loving?!?Not since James Cameron's "I'm the King of the World" has a... more

French production company Gaumont wants to make more English language films, and they are starting with "Greek Fire," a film about opera singer Maria Callas and her volatile love affair with Aristotle Onassis.
Here is an excerpt:
"This is a story of the impact that love can have on a star," Riandee said. "Maria was so in love with Onassis that when their affair ended, she began to lose her voice, and there is a famous moment in Paris where she could not sing the third and fourth acts of an opera."French production company Gaumont wants to make more English language films, and they... more

See what happens when you make a great socially conscious movie? Guerrilla charities come after you. Hard.
"The famous French actors walking along the Croisette with "No Hunger" pins have a goal: recruit Al Gore.
The No Hunger campaign, begun in Spain and now making its way through France on its way to the U.S., is asking the former U.S. vice president to make a movie about famine. On AskAlGore.org, activists can sign a petition asking Gore to make a film about the global famine crisis.
Following the success of Gore's appeal to humanity in the Davis Guggenheim-helmed "An Inconvenient Truth," No Hunger activists are hoping a Gore-fronted film addressing malnutrition will raise global awareness and reach out to people across the world.
Action Against Hunger, an NGO offering emergency aid to millions of people, is spearheading the campaign. Launched in the fall in Madrid, the No Hunger viral campaign has spread to Paris, London, New York and Montreal. More than 50,000 have signed the petition, including several Spanish and French actors and media personalities including Vargas Laosa, Samuel Lebihan, Jean Rochefort, Franck Dubosc and even U.S.-based "Heroes" co-star Jimmy Jean Louis.
While Gore has not yet responded to the call, organizers already have posted a fake trailer for the film on the Web. Gore has expressed interest in the project, but hasn't given a specific response yet. Organizers will present the petition to the former veep in September, and expect to have at least 100,000 signatures by then.
"The Festival de Cannes is a huge world cinema rendez-vous. It's thus the ideal place to mobilize participants for the No Hunger cause," spokesperson for the Action Against Hunger organization Elise Rodriguez said. Upcoming targets for the cause include Monica Bellucci and Leonardo DiCaprio.
And if organizers have their wish, the film may actually make its debut here.
"The No Hunger movie should be in the official selection of the Festival de Cannes next year!" French actor and AAH ambassador Samuel Lebihan said. "See what happens when you make a great socially conscious movie? Guerrilla charities... more

Interesting note about her invented character for entertainment purposes.
"MTV has picked up a doc about the blond one, "Paris, Not France," Adria Petty's look behind the scenes at the life and persona of the young socialite.
MTV, which is set to begin airing the second season of "Paris Hilton's My New B.FF" next month is tentatively planning to air the documentary on the network this summer.
Petty, known primarily as a music-video director, had enormous access both to Hilton's private life and her public jetsetting one in the film. She also interviews a large number of Hilton's family and friends.
The film essentially shows that the public caricature of Hilton as a ditzy party-girl is mainly a character invented for entertainment purposes, and the actual Hilton is far more thoughtful and self-aware. (Indeed, in a number of interviews in the piece she comes across as thoughtful and self-aware.)
Originally commisioned as an add-on to a music video DVD, the project grew into a 78-minute feature after Petty realized she had a lot more footage than she initially planned.
The film debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last year, where William Morris Independent was selling it but, because of potential objections about distribution from the Hilton camp, had not been screened since. After watching the film with an audience, Hilton's concerns were allayed.
William Morris Independent is selling international rights at Cannes, where Hilton is scheduled to land shortly for - what else - a little partying."Interesting note about her invented character for entertainment purposes.... more

"For years, filmmakers flocked to the Cannes Film Festival to sell their independently financed movies, confident they'd soon see their work exhibited in movie theaters. Like so many show business dreams, those visions have been vanishing quickly as numerous distributors of film-festival fare closed their doors after losing money or corporate support. But there's a potential savior on the horizon called video on demand -- and it may be hiding somewhere inside your cable television box.
Just as the videocassette and the DVD brought untold billions into studio coffers, video-on-demand distribution may deliver some much-needed economic relief to independent cinema, those often highbrow dramas and low-budget genre films made outside the studio system that have been struggling to turn a profit. It's likely that of the hundreds of movies headed to this year's Cannes festival (which opens Wednesday), only a handful will attract an American theatrical distributor, but scores may land video-on-demand deals.
"I think it is inevitable that it will succeed," said John Sloss, a lawyer and leading sales agent for independent film who this July will launch his own video-on-demand cable service, called Cinetic Film Buff. "Imagine the coolest, most imaginative film-literate person programming your Netflix queue. That's what this channel can be."
Unlike some Internet-based movie services, such as Amazon on Demand and YouTube Screening Room, video-on-demand movies arrive on your television set, not your computer. Cable subscribers with VOD channels can pick from several dozen independent films; with just a few clicks on the remote, the video-on-demand movie starts in seconds, rather than a more limited number of films that begin at prescribed times, as is the case with pay-per-view titles.
For the distributors of independent film, VOD offers a cost-effective end run around most showings at the multiplex, where costs for even a limited national release can total $500,000. The way some forward-looking filmmakers and the VOD channel programmers see things, the new technology can bring their movies into corners of the country that rarely would have a chance to see new films that played in Cannes or other leading festivals at a fraction of the cost of a theatrical release.
"It is the wave of the future," said Andrew Herwitz, whose Films Sales Company is a prominent vendor of independent movies. "But the future is not yet here."
IFC Films, the most aggressive buyer and distributor of VOD releases, now operates two VOD channels, one for movies in limited theatrical release and one for films that have appeared only at festivals and will never make it to a theater. IFC acquired nine movies that premiered at last year's Cannes festival and picked up several others being sold at the concurrent film market.""For years, filmmakers flocked to the Cannes Film Festival to sell their... more

This year, apparently, there are a few things missing from Cannes: movie posters, promotions, parties, and buzz. The culprit? The economy.

Coppola turned down an out-of-competition slot for 'Tetro' (after Cannes turned down his film for an in-competition slot). But now 'Tetro' will open Directors' Fortnight:
"Coppola's Tetro to open Directors' Fortnight
Following his rejection of an out-of-competition slot, Francis Ford Coppola will unveil Tetro as the opening film of this year's Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes film festival (May 13 - 23).
Last week, the filmmaker released a statement saying he had turned down an out-of-competition invitation to the festival: "While I very much appreciate the invitation, this is an independent film, self-financed and self-released, and I felt that being invited for a non-competition gala screening wasn't true to the personal and independent nature of this film."
The rest of the line-up for the Fortnight includes 23 features of which seven are first films and eligible to compete for the Camera d'Or.
The US and France have a strong presence in the sidebar with other films spread out over Canada, Europe and Asia.
There is also a trio of titles from Sundance: Cherien Dabis' well-received Amreeka, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's I Love You Philip Morris, and Lynn Shelton's Humpday which sold to Magnolia in Park City for mid-six figures.
