Perhaps I was wrong in expecting Current.com to be "progressive." But I just received an email from Current.com (specifically, Brigettasf) attempting to convince me to become a walking advertisement for the Ford Motor Company. At first glance, I thought, "Oh, this car is running on some kind of new technology!" But no, it isn't. It's the same thing we've been sold for the past 30 years.
That's pretty f#@ked up.
Isn't our culture, indeed, our entire economic worldview, causing great stress for all other living things on Earth? -Not to mention a force of great disrespect to most indigenous people and 3rd World countries...? Is it not directly related to our carefree consumerism and this kind of relentless propaganda? We've become conveniently accustomed to these images and sounds as cues to who we are, who we can be, who we SHOULD BE. Billions of dollars are spent each year to make sure of that.
This cheaply disguised attempt to appropriate my left-leaning sensibilities feels like an unapologetic continuation of the same bullshit that even now causes actual global disharmony. It is a mockery to any true progressive ideals. In essence, it is an advertisement for Ford saying: "Hey there, young man! You're hip. We can tell! Why don't you get in my car and I'll cut you a deal you won't regret. You're a winner!"
I honestly (naively, perhaps) thought that current.com was a part of the solution, not the problem.
This email is part of the problem.
Get your sh*t together, Current.com, 'cuz we've got a long way to go.

Ford Motor Co. has offered buyout or retirement incentive packages to all of its 41,000 U.S. hourly workers as it tries to further reduce its factory work force. Ford, the healthiest of Detroit's three automakers and the only one to avoid government aid and bankruptcy protection, still has more workers than it needs to produce cars and trucks at current sales levels, said company spokesman Mark Truby.

It all started with a question: How would you unleash your Mustang side if nothing were holding you back? The ideas were as different as the people who proposed them and poured in by the thousands. We helped the 10 best become reality behind the wheel of a 2010 Mustang. From drifting in Japan to pitting student against teacher on the drag strip to handing over the keys to a man who lost his sight over 20 years ago.It all started with a question: How would you unleash your Mustang side if nothing... more

The 2010 Ford Taurus runs second to the BMW 7 Series as Digital Drive Car of the Year. Call it the Bang for Buck Car of the Year, even if its price fully loaded hits $40,000.
We can explain: Where BMW delivers a broad front assault with most every state-of-the-art technology imaginable, Ford delivers the technology you need, affordably. Lots of technology: active cruise control, collision alert, blind spot detection, cross traffic alert, fillerless gap cap, butt-massaging seats,Sync, 911 Assist, and the My Key for tiered teen-driving privileges. Some Ford tech features aren't even on BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, or Lexuses. Order every Taurus option, and you'll still be at half the price--half the base price--of the BMW 7 Series.
Sync gives you free or low-cost (sub-$300) Bluetooth handsfree phone and music connections as well as hard-wired (USB) music connections. The Sync add-on 911 Assist provides free - no cost, life of the car - emergency crash notification so long as your phone is on and Bluetooth-connected. The first-rate Xanavi navigation system offers real-time traffic, weather information, sports scores, and movie listings.
My Key lets parents set privileges and reminders for young drivers. When fully programmed: The seat belt reminder chime doesn't time out. The radio mutes until belts are fastened. The low fuel light goes on at 75 not 50 miles to empty. Parking sonar, blind spot detection, cross traffic alert, and traction control can't be deactivated. Top speed is 80 mph. Audio is limited to 44% of max volume. Speed alerts chime at 45, 55, or 65 mph.
Active cruise control paces you with the car in front and works from highway speeds down to 20 mph. Some go all the way to a stop and then back up to speed, but they cost twice as much as Ford's solution. Collision lights off a panel of 14 LEDs at the base of the windshield if ACC may not be able to stop in time; there is no chance you'll miss this indicator. Cross-traffic alert uses the blind spot detection radars to warn of crossing traffic when you pull out of a parking spot. The capless filler is a self-sealing flap that does anyway with the screw cap that's on all other fuel tanks. The multi-contour seat with active motion provides a massaging action that changes the pressure points for driver and passenger on long trips. BMW has it, too, but not for $595.The 2010 Ford Taurus runs second to the BMW 7 Series as Digital Drive Car of the Year.... more

The Ford Fiesta has proven to be a very successful small car wherever it's sold in the world. Ford has sold 12 million Fiestas over the vehicle's lifetime and the new-for-2009 model has moved half a million units already this year in Europe and Asia. It's a smash hit in spite of the fact that the Fiesta is not for sale in the U.S., a.k.a. the world's biggest car market. Coca-Cola will join forces with NASCAR and the Homestead Miami Speedway to bring recycling to NASCAR fans during the 2009 Ford Championship Weekend November 20 – 22. The event in Homestead, Florida marks the culmination of a season-long effort to encourage NASCAR fans to recycle.
During the 2009 season, Coca-Cola and NASCAR collaborated to bring recycling programs to 14 tracks, and as a result of this initiative more than 2.5 million beverage containers were diverted from landfills into the recycling stream.
For this weekend’s season-ending events, more than 400 Coca-Cola identified recycling bins have been placed around Homestead-Miami Speedway, giving race-goers plenty of opportunities to recycle their used beverage bottles and cans. Fans camping at the RV campground site can recycle their aluminum and plastic beverage containers in special plastic recycling bags provided by Coca-Cola. A few lucky recyclers at the campgrounds will be rewarded by NASCAR with an exciting track experience – a lap around the track in a pace car, a spot at the drivers’ pre-race meeting, or access to the infield to view the driver introductions.
It has been an interesting few weeks for stock investors, they are doing their best to predict what can be expected of consumers in the fourth quarter, but for now, it’s still hard to tell. And the famous Cash for Clunkers program caused an explosion in car sales and made it hard to tell how the economy was truly doing under all these temporary boosts in sales. It’s been a whirlwind in the market last week, and the majority of the concerns come down to the consumer. Will we be able to lift ourselves out of this economy? That’s what investors are dying to figure out.
CIT was a participant in the Troubled Asset Relief Program and received $2.33 billion in December. This bankruptcy is the first government loss from TARP. However, CIT plans to stay in business and hopefully return from bankruptcy next year. High profile clients like Dunkin Donuts and Dark Castle Entertainment are counting on it.

The last thing youd expect to see zooming through Bemidji, Minn. at the Ojibwe Forests Rally is a 2010 Ford Mustang, or any Mustang for that matter. J.B. Niday, managing director of Rally America, had not yet experienced a 2010 Mustang at any of his Rally America competitions, but that was about to change.
Niday unselfishly chose to unleash his inner Mustang with Fords 10 Unleashed campaign through his two good friends Mike Hurst, technical director for Rally America, and Mark Utecht, one of Rally Americas top two wheel drive competitors.
There are no ovals, pace cars or rain delays in Rally racing. The sport features real cars racing against the clock on closed-off sections of real roads that are usually unpaved and unforgiving. Gravel logging roads, mountain passes, well groomed forest roads are what make up the tracks for rally drivers. Events can last several days and cover hundreds of miles through rain, snow and day or night. A rally car is the ultimate real world sports car: one that is capable of high speed and incredible handling on any road surface and in every weather condition.
Niday organized a head-to-head rally in a 2010 Ford Mustang on four stages of the Ojibwe Forests Rally course winner takes all.
Hurst and Utecht are friends off the track and deadly on it. Their friendly conversation of recent years has been about who is behind the wheel of the 86 Mustang that Hurst reluctantly sold to Utecht several years ago and this challenge would settle their Mustang rally feud once and for all.
Hurst last drove his cherished 86 Mustang in a rally in February of 2004. Utecht has proven he knows how to drive a Mustang in the woods by winning the Rally America Group 5 class in his region ever since he bought the 86 Mustang from Hurst.
To find out who earned lifetime bragging rights and also took home use of the 2010 Mustang for a year, check out the full HD video chronicling Mustang Rally at www.the2010mustang.com.The last thing youd expect to see zooming through Bemidji, Minn. at the Ojibwe Forests... more
