Cambridge University has asked script-writers of popular soaps such as Coronation Street and EastEnders to give it a plug to help dissolve its elitist image. They hope that being featured in the soaps' plotlines will incourage more state-educated students to apply to the uni and show they are "contemporary and modern ... and interested in the best students,"
Other programmes that have been approached include Emmerdale, Top Gear and Doctor Who.Cambridge University has asked script-writers of popular soaps such as Coronation... more

Ramsey St. legend Harold Bishop, played by Ian Smith, is making a permanent departure from the Aussie soap in October. The 70-year-old actor reprised his role as the bumbling tuba-player on a part-time basis last November but has since decided to call it a day for good.
His character hadn't been seen in the soap for a while after Harold hung up his general store (née Coffee Shop) overalls and went travelling around the world.
A spokeswoman for Australia’s Channel 10 - which makes the soap - said: "It was entirely his decision. We love him and would have loved to keep him."
It’s thought his last storyline will see Harold leave Erinsborough after beating prostate cancer.
Note: even cancer can't keep The Bishop down.

A Turkish soap opera is radically changing traditional expectations of gender roles thanks to its inspiring supportive male and independent female characters, MSNBC reports.
A relative newcomer to Arab TV, the Turkish soap opera "Noor" has helped narrow the gender gap between men and women across the Middle East.
Women see the lead female character – the independent, aspiring fashion designer Noor -- as a role model. Meantime, her husband on the show -- the blue-eyed former model and athlete Mohannad -- has become the region’s first pin-up boy.
The nightly soap opera has mainly female viewers glued to their TV sets not only because Mohannad is a cuter version of Justin Timberlake, but because he offers something many lack in their lives: romance, tenderness and a supportive partner to his independent wife. Mohannad has become the standard against which many Arab men are being judged, much to their chagrin.
In Saudi Arabia, where about one in seven people tunes in each night, men circulated the rumor that Kivanc Tatlitug, the actor who plays Mohannad, is gay, which left female viewers distraught until the rumor was dispelled.
"Mohannad" and "Noor" are now the hottest babies' names in Saudi – even though the religious establishment has condemned the show. A top Saudi cleric forbade viewers from watching the "malicious" soap operas that "corrupt and spread vice" and has also declared that any TV station airing them is against God. This has put Saudi-owned Middle East Broadcasting Company (MBC), which airs the show three times a day, at loggerheads with Saudi religious leaders.
The series has not only made Saudi women aware of the failings of their partners, but the advantages engendered by a more liberal, tolerant Islamic society such as Turkey.
"It is eye opening for Saudi women. They haven't seen such a sensitive, passionate, giving personality," explained Dr. Fawzaya Abu Khalid, a writer and women's activist based in Riyadh.
For many women, the show has opened a whole new world and a lot of men aren’t happy about it. "Men feel threatened. It is the first time women have a role model for male beauty and passion and can compare him with their husbands," said Abu Khalid. "It is the first time they found out their husbands are not nice, that they are not being treated the way they should be, and that there is an option outside."
What do you think? Can TV really change the world? If so, what kind of characters in TV programmes would ypu like to see on screen?

The Turkish soap opera "Noor" has proven a huge hit in the Arab world -- except among Muslim clerics -- thanks to the dreamy "Mohannad," husband of the show's namesake. It's also reportedly shaking up marriages from Saudi Arabia to Syria. NBC reports that a "recent divorcee allegedly told her husband 'I want to sleep with Mohannad one night and then die.'" Women's breathless devotion to the star has even inspired a Mohannad joke that's making the rounds: "A Saudi woman was touring Turkey with her husband and son when her husband went missing. As she described him to the police, her son shouted, 'But that's not what Daddy looks like.' 'Be quiet,' she whispers, 'They might just give me Mohannad.'"
"Learn from him how he treats her, how he loves her, how he cares about her"
Mohannad is a hunk, but, more important, he is a loving and supportive husband who allows his wife to pursue her passions and a career outside of the home. In an interview with NBC, women's activist Dr. Fawzaya Abu Khalid explained: "[Saudi women] haven't seen such a sensitive, passionate, giving personality. It is the first time women have a role model for male beauty and passion and can compare him with their husbands. It is the first time they found out their husbands are not nice, that they are not being treated the way they should be, and that there is an option outside." Indeed, 24-year-old Heba Hamdan, a housewife in Amman, Jordan, told the Associated Press that she lectured her husband: "Learn from him [Mohannad] how he treats her, how he loves her, how he cares about her." Hamdan was also inspired by the show to pursue her own career.
In case you think the reportage overstates the impact of the show, consider a fascinating study that found that access in rural India to soap operas with independent female characters brought about feminist thinking and measurable improvement in women's status. Maybe the revolution will be televised ... in the form of a soap opera. The Turkish soap opera "Noor" has proven a huge hit in the Arab world --... more

A series of videos have been taken off of You Tube by Mexican television giant Televisa. The only similarity between the videos and the network is that they both share the same title. There is speculation that videos were taken down, because of the political nature of the work. The makers of the videos also run the web-server, which hosts the EZLN's website.
