OK, OK, I know this is supposed to be about life in and around San Francisco and Dollar Tree is a national chain, but there's also a Dollar Tree in Colma, home of the dead people where we sometimes shop because, well, everything is a dollar. About a month ago I saw a $1 3.5oz rib-eye steak and bought one. It took be a while letting it sit in its frozen state, but last night I actually threw it on the grill and here's what I found out about it.OK, OK, I know this is supposed to be about life in and around San Francisco and... more
This morning there was a big hoopla in the papers and online about the opening of the new Fresh & Easy market in the Richmond District. Now I like to go to openings of things around the city, but don’t like the lines and crush of people. I figured, this is a grocery store. There shouldn’t be any problems right? The BBC states with 3D printing in the home, users would be able to print out and check items before buying them. This is quite strange idea considering current 3D printers can cost over £20,000.
However, the article points out one company a new set of 3D printers could cost around £300.
"In contrast to early 3-D printing machines which cost around £20,000, Dr Bowyer says a RepRap machine comes in at just £300.
And the software and hardware specifications are all open source - meaning the machine can be duplicated freely.
This low barrier to entry has piqued the interest of many entrepreneurs, keen to see how the technology can be effectively deployed."-BBC

If I had a fashion "thing," it would be coats.
I love coats. Jackets. Outerwear. They’re cozy, and they don’t have to compliment your outfit because you’re taking them off inside anyway, and even if you aren’t, they cover up the rest of your outfit and easily become outfits on their own. Coats! They’re fashion’s staple food in cold weather, the proverbial potatoes in the cellar.
I have a couple of coats – I do live in Seattle, the land of omg sudden weather (one of the freeways unexpectedly flooded yesterday…what!?) – but every year I find myself looking for just one more. It doesn’t help that I’ve gained weight, and wearing a jacket that doesn’t fit is like muffin topping – ew.
So here are a bunch of coats I want. They’re all under $100, and they’re all made by BB Dakota. (I own one of their wool belted trenches: it’s warm, and has held up really, really well for more than a year of rain and snow.)

BioBag makes several types of compostable bags. From biodegradable trash bags to compost bags, to dog bags and even a small kitchen compost bin that I love and use for my fruits and veggies scraps.
Their prices are relatively affordable, the dog bags for example, are selling for about $4.99 for a box of 50, which means you're paying .10 cents per bag. If you can, why not?
And if you can compost, why wouldn't you? Their small composting bin for the kitchen is very convenient, you can use it if you live in an apartment or even in a house and just need a place to put your fruits and veggies scraps (remember, never cooked food or meat/fish or bread). It easily becomes a free fertilizer that you can give away, use in your garden, plants, or just in the grass, it helps get your soil much stronger and healthier.
Some cool facts about the BioBag are, according to their website:
BioBag is proud to be the best selling brand of 100% biodegradable and certified compostable bags made from the material, Mater-Bi. We are also proud to be the first “bag from corn” to achieve national distribution of retail products through natural food stores across the country. The city of San Francisco selected BioBag to promote their residential food waste collection program. The city is sending 100,000 rolls of BioBags to residents within the county to help educate consumers on the importance of diverting food and other biodegradable waste from entering landfills. San Francisco residents can now purchase additional supplies at over 100 outlets in the bay area. BioBag is proud to be a partner in this important effort
The tall kitchen bags are strong and it has star sealed bottom for extra strength. BioBag also has lawn and leaf bags, shopping bags, and even a portable toilet bag, quite interesting. They say that the BioToi toilet and the Nature Bio-Bag waste bags works great for camping, boating, hiking, hunting, RV's and other related outdoor activities. Also, each waste bag is properly certified to decompose to a humus state within 40 days when placed in a controlled compost environment.
I also talk a little bit about me: who is Steffany founder of EcoBold? I was born and raised in a small ranch in Brazil and there were some things I didn't particularly like about the ranch! I always dreamed of having a door bell, a house number and a paved road (because we would have to get my moms car unstuck from the mud quite often). We had our own chickens, who had amazingly tasteful eggs, we ran around in the rain, played with animals, saw baby horses being born…. and of course we also got to see the destruction of our beautiful area by "people from the city" who were cutting all the trees around us and building big house complexes. Not to mention the pollution, and trash that started to increase. Today my goal is to make every green product available to everyone, I want them to be the norm, not the exception.More info and links here: http://www.ecobold.com/compost-bag-by-biobag/ BioBag makes... more

"These so-called ‘McWedding’ ceremonies include a buffet of burgers and a wedding cake built out of apple pies.

The city of Wilson, NC was tired of high internet, cable, and telephone prices, so they decided to do something about it. They started their own, city-owned, ISP. Now Time Warner Cable and Embarq have teamed up to convince North Carolina's legislature to propose bills outlawing community owned ISPs because the big guys cannot possibly compete.
We can see why they are worried. Wilson's ISP sounds great. It's an all fiber optic network that has 81 basic cable channels, 10 Mbps (download and upload), and a digital phone plan with unlimited long distance to the U.S. and Canada, all for $99.95, says Daily Tech. A comparable TWC package would cost $137.95, for an introductory rate.
Now Wilson's ISP, which calls itself "Greenlight" has started a blog to protest the legislation. Here's an excerpt:The city of Wilson, NC was tired of high internet, cable, and telephone prices, so... more

The Guardian reports, despite the 64% rise in Indias' literacy rate studies are still saying there is a problem with students being able to read and write. This lead the Indian Institute of Technology and Science to develop a cheap laptop, which can supply basic programs at an affordable price.
This week minister Kapil Sibal revealed a touchscreen laptop which will cost £25 "He said the touchscreen gadget was packed with web browers, PDF reader and video conferencing facilities, but its hardware was created with sufficient flexibility to incorporate new components according to user requirement."-Guardian
With the early submitted story on current about electronics increasing in prices over a wage boost, it'll be interesting to see a debate on do cheap devices help the poor and education affordability or will it mean some will earn less and won't be able to afford the devices.
"It obviously isn't the first time that low cost internet device has been mooted, with the One Laptop Per Child project aiming to do just that. But, if the Indian government can provide a £23 laptop to even a small portion of its 1.2 billion population then the world will sit up and take note"-Tech Radar

Joe Biden Calls Manager Who Told Him To Lower Taxes ‘Smartass’
June 26th, 2010
Vice President Joe Biden is starting to give White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel a run for his money in the salty language category. On the campaign trail for Democratic Senator Russ Feingold at Wisconsin’s Kopp’s Frozen Custard today, Biden called its owner a “smartass” for suggesting the vice president’s treat would be on the house if he would agree to lower the owner’s taxes.

The entire anecdote could not be more classic Biden: The Vice President enters the story under the misconception that he is about to eat ice cream. Then he goes all in and tinkers with the machines and helps serve some frozen custard himself, and enjoys some of the frozen confection. In response to asking the owner of the shop how much money he owes, the owner tells him it’s on the house if Biden agrees to “lower our taxes.” A few minutes later, Biden asks the owner, “Why don’t you say something nice instead of being a smartass all the time?”Joe Biden Calls Manager Who Told Him To Lower Taxes ‘Smartass’... more
