On Sunday, Elon Musk's "Falcon 1" became the first privately-constructed spacecraft to orbit the Earth. After three previous tries by SpaceX (the latest of which resulted in the loss of NASA's experimental solar sail, two satellites, and a number of cremated remains, including those of James "Scotty" Doohan of Star Trek), this fourth launch seems to have gone flawlessly. An interesting contrast tonight between China's manned flight and the first private orbital flight for America.

Throughout history, the great nations have been the ones at the forefront of the frontiers of their time. Britain became great in the 17th century through its exploration and mastery of the seas. America's greatness in the 20th century stemmed largely from its mastery of the air. For the next generations, the frontier will be space.
Other countries will explore the cosmos, whether the United States does or not. And those will be Earth's great nations in the years and centuries to come. I believe America should look to its future - and consider what that future will look like if we choose not to be a spacefaring nation. Of the two things that go into making a future space explorer, being a computer wizz-kid and an astronaut's son are well up there on my list.
The lucky, and no-doubt soon to be bankrupt, upcoming space cowboy is Richard Garriott and he will make history as the first child of an American astronaut to rocket into space. His dad is the famous Owen Gariott, or Mr. Gariott to his son's friends.
If you're wondering what the in-flight entertainment is gonna be like, he's gonna have regular chats with daddy who's off to Mission Control in Moscow to watch his little soldier make history. Of the two things that go into making a future space explorer, being a computer... more

If you didn't already know, Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic plans to provide sub-orbital spaceflights to the public as early as next year.
On July 28, Branson and American aerospace designer Burt Rutan unveiled the White Knight Two, an exotic jet that will carry a passenger spaceship to launch altitude.
The four-engine jet, with its 140-foot single wing, is an engineering marvel. The space between its twin fuselages is where SpaceShipTwo, the passenger rocket, will be mounted.

The four-engine jet, with its 140-foot single wing, is an engineering marvel. The space between its twin fuselages is where SpaceShipTwo, the passenger rocket being built for Branson's Virgin Galactic, will be mounted.
White Knight Two, billed as the world's largest all-carbon-composite airplane, is "one of the most beautiful and extraordinary aviation vehicles ever developed," Branson proclaimed.
White Knight Two is the brainchild of Rutan, who made history in 2004 when his SpaceShipOne became the first private, manned craft to reach space. SpaceShipOne accomplished it with help from White Knight Two's smaller predecessor, White Knight. After winning $10 million for the feat, Rutan partnered with Branson, chairman of Virgin Group, to commercialize the prototype.

"British entrepreneur and adventurer Richard Branson on Monday took the wraps off an aircraft that, for $200,000 a seat, may someday take tourists who can afford it on the first leg of regular, albeit very brief, commercial flights into space.
Amid extravagantly orchestrated publicity at a historic test airfield near Edwards Air Force Base, Branson unveiled the double-hulled "mother ship" built to carry a capsule filled with six wealthy tourists high into the stratosphere, from where the smaller ship would rocket into the blackness more than 60 miles above Earth.
The dual-fuselage, all-composite plane expands and refines the smaller version that famed aircraft designer Burt Rutan twice used four years ago to begin the journey of a piloted capsule to sub-orbital altitude, winning the X-Prize competition aimed at encouraging private spaceflight.
No one knows when Virgin Galactic will fly, but about 100 people have already paid full price for the trip, which comes to $50,000 per minute for the four minutes the travelers will spend in weightlessness. An additional 170 have put down deposits.
'It's no good saying it's just extravagant. It could lead to all kinds of things,' said Evette Branson after christening the oddly shaped four-engine jet, dubbed Eve in her honor."

Virgin Galactic has unveiled the WhiteKnightTwo, labelling it as "a new class of carrier airplane that will help loft space tourists beyond Earth's atmosphere."
Notice the use of a 'new class,' I didn't know we had a 'current class' of everyday space-travelling machines, but there you go.
From the article:
"WhiteKnightTwo will ferry the not-yet-unveiled SpaceShipTwo crafts, six-passenger versions of the original SpaceShipOne, up to 50,000 feet (15,240 meters) above Earth.
The passenger ship is then launched from the underside of WhiteKnightTwo to continue its ascent to the very edge of space—about 65 miles (104 kilometers) above Earth—under its own power. SpaceShipTwo crafts make the return trip to Earth unaided. "
Space travel for a ridiculous price anyone?

"Virgin Galactic is giving the world a glimpse of its secret space tourism program. Sir Richard Branson's space company Monday trotted out the mothership aircraft that will launch a still-to-be-built spaceship out of the atmosphere. The mothership is a white, four-engine plane with room in the middle where the spacecraft will go.
The early morning rollout in California's Mojave desert came four years after SpaceShipOne became the first private manned rocket to reach space. Now the White Knight Two aircraft being shown today is due to undergo flight tests this fall.
More than 250 customers have paid $200,000 or put down a deposit for the chance to be one of Virgin Galactic's first space tourists. A date for the first launch has yet to be announced."

Humans can build spaceships capable of reaching the Moon within minutes; a flight to Mars will take 2.5 hours, and a flight to Alpha Centauri, which is scores of light years away from Earth, will take a mere 80 days.
Incredible journeys can be a reality, say two German Doctors of Physics who put forth an audacious theory. Walter Dresher from the University of Innsbruck joined forces with Joachim Hoiser, a leading scientist with the German company HPCC-Space Gmbh...Humans can build spaceships capable of reaching the Moon within minutes; a flight to... more

In a suitport system, a rear-entry space suit is attached and sealed against the outside of a spacecraft, space habitat, or rover. To go on an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), an astronaut first enters the suit from inside the vehicle, and closes and seals the space suit backpack and the vehicle's hatch (which seals to the backpack for dust containment). The astronaut then unseals and separates the suit from the vehicle, and is ready to perform an EVA.
To re-enter the vehicle, the astronaut backs up to the suitport and seals the suit to the vehicle, before opening the hatch and backpack and transferring back into the vehicle. If the vehicle and suit do not operate at the same pressure, it will be necessary to equalize the two pressures before the hatch can be opened.

In February, 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell experienced the little understood phenomenon sometimes called the “Overview Effect”. He describes being completely engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. Without warning, he says, a feeing of bliss, timelessness, and connectedness began to overwhelm him. He describes becoming instantly and profoundly aware that each of his constituent atoms were connected to the fragile planet he saw in the window and to every other atom in the Universe. He described experiencing an intense awareness that Earth, with its humans, other animal species, and systems were all one synergistic whole. He says the feeling that rushed over him was a sense of interconnected euphoria. He was not the first—nor the last—to experience this strange “cosmic connection”.
