Two quakes rock New Zealand
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NEW: Two quakes hit New Zealand within 90 minutes of each other
"It was quite an exciting ride," a police official says of the first quake
A 6.3-magnitude temblor struck the same area in February, killing more than 180 people
(CNN) -- A pair of earthquakes struck within 90 minutes of each near Christchurch, New Zealand, on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, reviving vivid memories of a deadly quake that killed more than 150 people in February.
"It was quite an exciting ride," Christchurch Police Acting Inspector Murray Hurst told CNN after the first quake, adding that there was some damage caused by the quake and a few injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police evacuated sections of the city's central business district after reports of a possible gas leak, police said. Several bridges in the city was closed as a precaution.
The first quake -- a magnitude 5.2 -- was centered 9 kilometers (5 miles) east-southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), according to USGS.
The second quake -- a more powerful 6.0 -- hit about 13 kilometers (8 miles) north-northeast of the city at a depth of 9 kilometers (5.6 miles).
The quakes came nearly four months after a 6.3-magnitude temblor struck the same area, killing more than 180 people.
CNN's Jack Maddox contributed to this report.

“Double Happy” is an unusually observant short film written and directed by the young New Zealand filmmaker Shahir Daud, which has been selected for presentation at the Montreal International Film Festival, HOF Film Festival (Germany), Interfilm (Berlin), CFC Film Festival (Canada), Winterthur Film Festival (Switzerland), and Show Me Shorts (New Zealand).
A film of rare quality and power, “Double Happy” is a lovely film to look at and it possesses a high level of technical excellence. At its heart, the film is a character drama, relying on expertly presented profiles to build its story, showing, rather than telling, the essential details about its characters in order to relate their motivations. Finally, it displays a subtlety and patience in unfolding its drama, only to upend you at the climax in a shocking fashion.
“Double Happy” presents a detailed look at the inevitable emergence of a huge social fuck-up, the slow buildup to the moment you eternally wish you could take back. It’s been said that almost all extremely terrible, destructive actions have their origins in positive desires, and in this simple drama about four New Zealand teenagers in tne 1990s, we are, in a very shocking fashion, made witness to that truism.
If there is one particular feature that makes “Double Happy” stand out, it would be that it is an unusually observant film about young people, their shy gestures and bold dares, as well as the sometimes very strange characteristics of their group dynamics; the constantly fluid shifting of in-group and out-group designations achieved and enforced through secrets and put-downs. At this age, one discovers that even when you care, you can end up trampling on one another out of simple inexperience, fear and carelessness. “Double Happy” paints an impressively clear and nuanced picture in which the emotional and physical denigration of its protagonist slowly builds, causing his anger to mount and ultimately leading to its tragic misdirection.
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the emotionally powerful short film.

A New Zealand truck driver who fell on a compressed air hose that pierced his buttock has survived being blown up like a balloon.
Steven McCormack had fallen between the cab and the trailer of his truck, breaking the air hose.
The nozzle pierced his buttock and began pumping air into his body, which expanded dramatically.
As he screamed, Mr McCormack's colleagues turned the air off and laid him on his side, saving his life.
The accident happened at Opotiki on the North Island on Saturday.
Mr McCormack, who is 48, is still in hospital in the nearest town, Whakatane.
He said that doctors had told him they were surprised that his skin had not burst, as the compressed air - pumping into his body at 100lb/sq in - had separated fat from muscle.
"I felt the air rush into my body and I felt like it was going to explode from my foot.
"I was blowing up like a football... it felt like I had the bends, like in diving. I had no choice but just to lay there, blowing up like a balloon," he told the local newspaper, the Whakatane Beacon.
He said his skin feels "like a pork roast", hard and crackly on the outside but soft underneath.
He credits his colleagues, especially Jason Wenham who put him on his side, with saving his life.
Mr Wenham, Ross Hustler and Robbie Petersen had lifted Mr McCormack off the brass nozzle which was still stuck in his body, and packed ice around his swollen neck until an ambulance arrived.
Doctors inserted a tube into his lungs to drain the fluid and cleared the wound in his buttock using what felt to him like a drill.
"That was the most painful part," he said.
"It's fair to say he's lucky to be alive, it was a potentially life-threatening situation," a hospital spokeswoman told AFP on Wednesday.
Mr McCormack confided that the air was gradually escaping his body in the way that air usually does.A New Zealand truck driver who fell on a compressed air hose that pierced his buttock... more

Happy Easter!
In addition to this being Easter week, it also happens to be a three-day holiday in Australia and New Zealand -- ANZAC Day, the most important holiday in both countries.
ANZAC Day is actually a very somber and serious day, with memorial services in both countries -- a combination of both Veterans Day and Memorial Day in America.
But, like Veterans Day and Memorial Day, it is also admittedly an excuse for barbecues and get-togethers and music festivals. For more and more young Aussies and Kiwis, with neither country involved to a large degree in war since World War II (though Aussie and Kiwi troops have fought in Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan), the true meaning of ANZAC Day is becoming a more distant memory. For many, it is an opportunity to celebrate the idea of peace, rather than the remembrance of war.
ANZAC Day memorializes the sacrifice of Aussie and Kiwi soldiers at the bloody months-long Battle of Gallipoli, in present-day Turkey, from 1915-1916. Thousands of Aussies and Kiwis were sacrificed by English generals in assault after assault against Johnny Turk's entrenched guns. Both Australia and New Zealand were fledgling nations at the time of the battle -- each less than 10 years old as quasi-independent Dominions, and this battle cemented the idea of nationhood for both countries.
So, I thought it would be nice to commemorate this weekend with a music thread of all Aussie and Kiwi music.
Perhaps some of you have heard of some Australian or New Zealand artists I am not aware of.
(A very young and apparently sober Mel Gibson (Yank-Aussie, though Aussies no longer claim him for some reason ☺) in an excellent early 1980s movie about Gallipoli)

A new beer to be launched in New Zealand's largest city at 7:00am Thursday has been slammed by alcohol watchdogs concerned about its promotion as a "breakfast beer."
The cherry-flavored wheat lager is described as "a beer the ladies can enjoy too ... if you're having a champagne breakfast but don't fancy champagne, have a beer instead," the New Zealand Herald reported Sunday.
The beer, made by Marlborough brewery Moa, contains 5.5 percent alcohol and will be officially launched at an Auckland cafe this week, but has already been slammed as "irresponsible."
National Addiction Centre director Doug Sellman said the marketing of the beer was "a completely irresponsible stunt from a health and addiction perspective, because it is normalizing pathological behavior."
Moa co-owner Geoff Ross said the company was not trying to create irresponsible behavior.

New Zealand's Fonterra - the world's biggest dairy exporter - is under scrutiny over potential GM [genetically modified] contamination in the milk products it sells.
It comes after Greenpeace Australia questioned the controls on dairy farms run by an Australian company in which Fonterra has a controlling stake.
Fonterra refused to answer the environmental group's questions - prompting a red flag in the Greenpeace True Food Guide 2011.
Other food lines to be red flagged include Streets icecream, Continental Soup, Hellmans, Flora and Pro Active, all made by Unilever. Weight Watchers Cereal Bars and Muffin Bars, McCain pizzas and Sara Lee were also flagged.
Fonterra did provide a written statement addressing Herald on Sunday questions. The statement acknowledged that it only limited the presence of unwelcome genetically-modified proteins - it did not always eradicate them entirely.
"We continually strive to minimise unintentional traces of GE content," said Jeremy Hill, Fonterra group director of technology.
He declined to answer questions around where Fonterra's feed is sourced from, and whether the feed is tested for the presence of GM proteins.
True Food Guide co-ordinator Nathaniel Pelle said he had phoned Fonterra's [milk supply] general manager Tim Deane, after not receiving any reply to two written requests for information.
The general manager said the company was not willing to participate in the Greenpeace survey.
Unilever also acknowledged the presence of GM ingredients.
"We cannot claim that all ingredients in our products are GM free," the company said, in a written statement to the newspaper. "Where we cannot be 100 per cent confident on any statement, we will not make it - which is why as a business we don't make 'GM-free' claims in relation to any of our products."
Unilever said its products meet "rigorous safety and quality standards" but the company's complex supply chain made it difficult to avoid GM and GM-derived ingredients.
The products sold by Fonterra, Unilever and the other companies meet the standard, "generally recognised as safe ", as assessed by the transtasman regulatory body, Food Standards Australia New Zealand. The standard allows one per cent of a product to be genetically modified.
In Australia, food containing GM content must be labelled on the packet - but this is not required in New Zealand.
Sara Lee general manager Paul O'Brien issued a statement: "Verification as to the source of ingredients purchased by SLA will be the responsibility of the ingredient supplier."
Weight Watchers said: "The Weight Watchers method ... can be easily followed with or without the use of GM foods. Weight Watchers only uses ingredients which are 'generally recognised as safe'."
McCain, though, rejected its True Food Guide rating, saying the company asked suppliers to certify that the products they supply to McCain Foods did not contain GM ingredients, and conducted spot audits.New Zealand's Fonterra - the world's biggest dairy exporter - is under... more

MASSIVE QUAKE HITS JAPAN
Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami alerts and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital. The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath.
In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone. Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. It triggered a tsunami alert for various countries, the National Weather Service said.

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive wave filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward land.
The number of fatalities was unclear, but Japan's Kyodo news reported at least 10 killed and numerous injured.
The quake prompted at least 20 countries and numerous Pacific islands to issue tsunami warnings. It was followed by powerful aftershocks that were felt in capital of Tokyo.
At Tokyo Station, one of Japan's busiest subway stations, people grabbed each other to steady themselves. Children cried. An announcement over the station loudspeaker warned commuters to remain underground.
With bus and train lines interrupted, workers and children poured into the streets after offices and schools were closed.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan appealed for calm and said there were no reported leaks of radioactive materials from power plants.
Firefighters battled a blaze at an oil refinery in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.
"This was larger than anyone expected and went on longer than anyone expected," said Matt Alt in Tokyo.
"My wife was the calm one ... she told us to get down and put your back on something, and leave the windows and doors open in case a building shifts so you don't get trapped."
Richard Lloyd Parry said when the quake struck, he looked through a window and saw buildings shaking from side to side.
Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.
A tsunami is sweeping across the Pacific Ocean, with a wall of water heading toward at more than a dozen countries.
An earthquake of that size can generate dangerous tsunamis to coasts outside the source region, the National Weather Service said.
Humanitarian agencies were working with rescue crews to reach the people affected.
"When such an earthquake impacts a developed country like Japan, our concern also turns to countries like the Philippines and Indonesia, which might not have the same resources," said Rachel Wolff, a spokeswoman for World Vision.
In Philippines alone, the tsunami is expected to hit in the early morning and the government has ordered the evacuation of 19 provinces along the coast, which could affect hundreds of thousands of people
Authorities in at least 20 countries and numerous Pacific islands issued tsunami warnings, the National Weather Service said.
The tsunami could cause damage "along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," warned the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."
Tsunamis are a series of long ocean waves that can last five to 15 minutes and cause extensive flooding in coastal areas. A succession of waves can hit -- often the highest not being the first, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.
A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.
CNN's Kyung Lah, Faith Karimi and Kevin Voigt contributed to this report.

Here is what I think is, thus far, the most horrifying video (no, no dead or dying people) of what the tsunami looked like, taken from someone who had time to get up to higher ground and watch the town around him get destroyed.
Just picked it up from Sean Bonner, on Twitter...
