How bad was the lie and why is the main article posting a picture from the Cool Runnings film?
The top military scientists lied on his resume, which claimed he knew Jamaica's Cool Running team and raced against them as an Olympic bobsledder while also stating he was an ex-Marine. Though possibly the reason he resigned was because he falsely claimed he was a nuclear weapons designer for Britains Polaris missiles.
"Mr Wilce headed Defence Technology Agency (DTA) for five years but 60 Minutes alleged he had padded his resume with false claims about his qualifications and past achievements.
They included being a combat veteran in Britain's Royal Marines and a member of the British bobsleigh team at the 1988 Calgary Olympics and competing against Jamaica, which inspired hit the 1993 movie Cool Runnings."-news au

(CNN) -- A beachgoer in a remote area of northern New Zealand found a horrific sight Friday morning -- 58 pilot whales stranded on Karikari Beach.
When conservation officials arrived, only 15 of the animals were still alive. The whales probably became stranded sometime during the night, said Carolyn Smith of New Zealand's Department of Conservation in Kaitaia, and that's why so many died before being discovered.
"The focus for everyone right now was to try to refloat the survivors," Smith said.
To do that, officials will position the whales to face out to sea and hope that they swim back out when high tide comes.
The whales "need to be held in the water for at least half an hour to allow them to reorientate themselves, before being released to hopefully swim back out to sea," the conservation department said.
A first attempt to refloat the whales was not successful Friday night. Conservation officials were going to monitor the animals overnight in the hope of trying again, maybe after moving them to Matai Bay, where sea conditions could be more favorable for refloating.
The next attempt would happen Saturday morning, said Mike Davies, acting area manager at the Department of Conservation's Kaitaia office.
Far North Whale Rescue, which has a team of trained volunteers, is working with the department to achieve this.
Currently, New Zealand's Far North region is experiencing heavy rain and wind, both a help and a hindrance to the rescue efforts, the Department of Conservation said. It means the whales are not at risk of drying out, but it creates difficult conditions for rescuers.
Adult pilot whales can measure up to 20 feet long and weigh up to 3 tons. Due to their social nature, they are often involved in mass strandings, according to the American Cetacean Society. The ACS is a non-profit group based in California that works to protect whales, dolphins and porpoises, according to its website.

Silk Mermaid » About Kim Graham
The daughter of a Montana sawyer (lumberjack), Kim began her art career in 1984 as a graphics artist for Austin game company Steve Jackson Games. She moved to Seattle, Washington in 1985. For 12 years, while working as a housekeeper, she painstakingly taught herself every part of her craft: painting, airbrush, ceramics, moldmaking, plastics casting, and steel fabrication. In 1997 she became a full-time artist, sculpting many pieces for gaming and entertainment companies such as Wizards of the Coast. The Kim Graham Studios online gallery shows some of her work.
Much technical information about molds and casting was obscure or difficult to find, so Kim had to rediscover it independently — a process she compares to learning how to build a toaster by looking at toast. Since developing her own techniques, Kim has taught her knowledge freely to every willing student, through classes, volunteer projects, and now this SilkMermaid blog.
Kim sculpts in a wide variety of media and sizes, ranging from fired clay figuratives to 22-foot dragons. In recent years she has moved away from her special effects/fantasy-based molded fiberglass work to focus on fine art sculptures: beautiful Art Nouveau-inspired plaques, busts, portraits, and even funerary urns for pets. Her current interest is large-scale architectural pieces. She seeks the holy grail of sculpting media, a nontoxic outdoor material, inexpensive to make, reasonably lightweight, and strong enough to support very large sculptures. After seven years of tests, she believes she is very close to finding it. SilkMermaid.com chronicles her ongoing tests.

Are we really currently witnessing a slow but sure forward movement by the World-Peace?
[1]. THE INTRODUCTION:
It is indeed heartening to see the unmistakable signs of the promotion of the World-Peace despite numerous human and non-human disasters happening in the world.
[2]. THE DISCUSSION:
Who would have expected that a recalcitrant Israeli government would agree to a UN probe into the flotilla raid? But, it has pleasantly happened, causing the progress of the peace in the West Asia. Already, the Israeli government has eased to some extent its Gaza blockade in the aftermath of the international outcry, resulting from this flotilla-fiasco, over the violation of the human-rights of the common Palestinians!
The international inquiry into the unfortunate deadly 31st May attack on a Gaza [Hamas-ruled]-bound Turkish-owned aid flotilla by the Israeli commandos killing 8 Turks and 1 Turkish-American said to have been resisting violently, shall be done by a four-person UNO panel led by the former New Zealand Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer as chairperson and the Colombian President Alvaro Uribe as vice chairperson with 1 Turk and 1 Israeli as its members, with the mandate to submit its report by the mid-September, 2010.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President said, “We are ready to sit down with Mr Obama face-to-face and put the global issues on the table, man-to-man, freely and in front of the media and see whose solutions are better.”
This statement reflects clearly the desire of the ruling establishment to come out of the current impasse with the USA. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President is said to be a populist leader who is unpopular with both the Hardliners and the Reformists. This is only to be expected because Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appears to be actually trying to make Iran a modern nation-State, but without appearing to have been sold out to the Reformists, in an approach of trying to retain the support of the Hardliners.
Naturally, he cannot reform Iran 100% because then he would be chucked out by the Hardliners. This approach is seen as him playing into the hands of the Hardliners by the Reformists. This makes him unpopular with the Reformists. The Hardliners, on the other hand seem to be peeved at his Reformist zeal and so they too seem to be dead against him.
It’s only the majority-constituting ordinary Iranians who seem to be happy with him because of the populist measures put in place by him.
His above-quoted statement is a positive chance for the White House to seize the opportunity. Obama would be prudent enough to open up a constructive dialogue, if not an outright debate-challenge, immediately with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President. Such peace-opportunities crop up rarely. The Wise statespersons do take advantage of such peace-building breaks in the interests of the world-peace.
One more unmistakable sign of the promotion of the world-peace can be seen in the USA’s decision to send an envoy on 6th of August, 2010 to commemorate the Uranium-bombing of the Japanese city Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, any such first and the only Atomic attacks on human population anywhere in the world. This noble gesture by the USA can certainly be seen as the Healing Touch for Japanese people after a period of 65 years by the USA.
It would be enriching to know a bit about these two incidents. The USA air force detonated the Uranium-bomb called ‘the Little Boy’ 1,890 feet above the city of Hiroshima at 8:15 am on the 6th of August, 1945 through the gun-barrel method. The explosion affected the area within a radius of 2.5 km and caused 90,000 deaths immediately followed by 1,40,000 more deaths within few coming months. The harmful radiation from the Little Boy proved more devastating, as it could spread easily all around in view of the presence of a flat terrain.
The USA plane detonated the Plutonium-bomb called ‘the Fat Man’ 1,800 feet above the city of Nagasaki at 11:02 am on the 9th of August, 1945 through the Implosion-method. The Fat Man hit the area within a radius of 2 km worst, caused the death of 40,000 people instantly followed by the death of 70,000 more people within months. Here, the casualties were minimized due to the presence of the hilly terrain which prevented the spreading of the resultant harmful radiation over a larger swath of geographical area.
The hard line Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, perceived to be behind the current J & K turmoil, has been released from the Jail by Omar Abdullah, the J & K Chief Minister. Notwithstanding his long-held hard line position on getting the plebiscite done for the entire Kashmiri population to decide whether to join India or Pakistan in terms of the 1948 United Nations Security Council Resolutions, has now mercifully and peacefully issued an appeal to the people of the J & K to eschew violence that has already resulted into the death of 49 civilians in the last 3 months.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, “People should hold peaceful demonstrations and if they are stopped by the police, they should sit down on the roads, raise their hands and ask the police to shoot them. It will be far more effective.”
Fair enough for the cause of the peace in this part of the world. A peaceful demonstration would ensure no damage to the public property or the loss of lives of the security personnel.
Also, Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s this peaceful approach ensures that the security personnel aren’t left with any motivation or incentive to kill the protesting civilians. Already, indications are that his release from the prison and his consequent peace-appeal has reduced the incidents of stone-pelting in the state and minimized the human casualties.
We do sense a sense of the peace on the Indian government-Maoist front, also. Of late, there have been no big casualties on this front. The Indian government seems to have been spared by the opposition which was hell-bent upon blocking the parliamentary proceedings as usual, on the price-issue. This seems to have brought some peace on this front, too.
Additionally, the dirty political game of the allegations-counter allegations over the Common Wealth Games Corruption scandal has for the time being buried till these games are over in New Delhi. The warring leaders have decided to open up their shrill mouths only after the end of these games. The Indian government seems to have got some peace on this count till then.
[3].The Conclusion:
It seems fairly enough that prayers of all those who are meditating and praying collectively or individually for the world-peace are being answered by the Almighty. Now, it is high time that the politically powerful ones on the globe ensured this peace process was kept going on the positive higher side. Are we really currently witnessing a slow but sure forward movement by the... more

Within an hour of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) opening in Morocco, official talks were suspended for two days.
Representatives from more than 80 nations had gathered for the annual IWC meeting, set to be the most controversial in years.
But the deputy chair of the IWC has called for private talks to break the deadlock.
Australia is concerned by the development and says it "shuts down the official process which has been underway for two years".
The sticking point remains over a proposal to overturn a 24-year ban on commercial whaling.
Under the IWC draft proposal, which Australia is opposing, Japan would be allowed to catch 120 whales a year in its coastal waters.
Mick McIntyre from Whales Alive says the deal has split the anti-whaling nations.
"This is a deal that's being supported by what we once called our allies," he said.
"Pro-conservation countries like the US and New Zealand - how did this happen?"
Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett says the Australian Government cannot accept the compromise.
"Australia must be successful in opposing this shabby deal," he said.
"If such a deal were to go through, Australians would need to resign themselves to watching the slaughter of whales in the Southern Ocean year after year over the next decade."Within an hour of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) opening in Morocco,... more

A tourist who fell asleep on a beach in New Zealand following a naked swim has been admitted to hospital after a venomous native spider bit him on his penis.
The 22-year-old Canadian, who had earlier left his clothes in the sand dunes while he went for a "skinny dip", then spent 16 days in hospital suffering from potentially fatal heart inflammation.
"He woke to find his penis swollen and painful, with a red mark on the shaft suggestive of a bite," Dr Nigel Harrison, who treated the man, writes in the latest New Zealand Medical Journal.
"He rapidly developed generalised muscle pains, fever, headache, photophobia [light sensitivity] and vomiting.
"It was a rather nasty, ill-placed bite," Dr Harrison said.
By the time the tourist reached the nearest hospital, in the northern town of Dargaville, his penis was severely swollen, his blood pressure was up and his heartbeat racing.
The following morning, chest pain and other symptoms developed and doctors diagnosed he had been bitten by a katipo, a rare native spider related to the Australian redback and North American black widow spiders.
The man was treated with anti-venom medicine sent from the regional hospital in Whangarei.
Although his condition rapidly improved the heart problems persisted.
As a result, he was treated at Whangarei Hospital then transferred to the much larger Auckland Hospital before returning home to Canada.
"He was discharged after a total of 16 days in hospital. On review he was generally well," the medical journal report says.
It is the first known case of myocarditis, or heart inflammation, occurring after a katipo spider bite.
The katipo, a Maori name meaning "night-stinger", is on New Zealand's endangered species list.
The spiders usually bite only in self defence.
The female has a black body with a white bordered red stripe on its back, while the male is white with black stripes and red diamond-shaped markings.
Only two deaths from katipo bites have been recorded, both in the 19th centuryA tourist who fell asleep on a beach in New Zealand following a naked swim has been... more

New Zealand police have shut a chain of home garden supply shops called Switched On Gardener that they allege form part of the backbone of the country's illegal cannabis industry.
All 16 branches of the chain were closed after employees allegedly sold drugs, cannabis plants and growing equipment and offered cannabis-growing tips to undercover officers, deputy police commissioner Rob Pope said today.
The closures were part of a major crackdown on the drug that has resulted in raids on 35 gardening businesses across New Zealand and the arrest of some 250 people, including employees, managers and company directors.
Some of those arrested were charged with selling drug-growing equipment, including 600-watt light bulbs, fertilizers including one called Budzilla, soil test kits, insect sprays, and magazines on cannabis, Mr Pope said.
The Switched On Gardener chain, which advertised on nationwide television, mainly sold garden supplies and equipment to home gardeners.
In New Zealand it is illegal to manufacture or sell equipment knowing it will be used to grow or make drugs.
More than 100 commercial cannabis growing operations allegedly linked to the businesses were found and dismantled during the operation.
Police said dried cannabis was found in at least one Switched On Gardener shop, while LSD, methamphetamine, ecstasy and firearms were seized by search squads from some other premises.
"We've got strong evidence of its (Switched On Gardener's) complicity in supplying equipment for cannabis growing on a sophisticated scale,'' Mr Pope said.
The national gardening chain would not have turned a profit if it hadn't been knowingly supplying equipment and advice to cannabis growers, he noted.
Offenders can be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison for cultivating cannabis in New Zealand, while supplying the drug can attract a maximum sentence of 14 years. Public campaigns to decriminalise cannabis so far have been unsuccessful.

Police cancelled Monday's performance at Sydney's Circular Quay after at least 10 girls fainted.

It is thought the swarm started when rumours spread that the 16-year-old Canadian heartthrob had arrived early.

Thousands of fans had spent the night camped out by the venue waiting for Bieber.
New South Wales state police Deputy Commissioner Dave Owens told reporters he was concerned about them being out at night unaccompanied.

It has been another terrible Easter for Central Otago pests as the 19th annual Great Easter Bunny Hunt spelled the end for more than 24,000 rabbits, hares, possums, stoats and other pests.
Hunt convener Dave Ramsay said 23,064 rabbits were shot and collected during the 24-hour hunt.
The total was significantly up on last year's 14,799 but still short of the highest recorded tally in 1997, when 23,949 were killed.
The total tally of 24,378 pests included 1152 hares, 54 possums, 54 stoats plus other sundry unwanted irritants.
This year's 39 teams beat the "pro rata" record by each killing an average of 590 rabbits, beating the 1997 average of 540.
Mr Ramsay said farmers in the area would "have to be pretty happy".
"We've had a pretty good clean-up and there's 23,000 [rabbits] that aren't out there breeding now."
He said the hunt was also a way to bring a bit of money to the community.
