Before being trapped half a mile underground for 69 days and finally rescued on Wednesday, the Chilean miners were unknown to the rest of the world.

With around 2,000 journalists at the San José mine it is not surprising firends and families of the trapped miners are worried about the effect the media attention will be when the miner escape from the tunnel.
"A poll of 20 families by the local newspaper La Tercera found that fears of media "overexposure" outweighed concerns over the men's psychological and physical health.
The hospital in the nearby town of Copiapó, where the men are due to be taken in a helicopter for 48 hours' observation, was bracing for a siege with security barriers being erected as TV crews arrived to book spots."-Guardian

During a speech David Cameron stated the death of the captured charity worker Linda Norgrove might have been the result of a grenade used by one of the rescuers and not a suicide vest detonation.

Pictures over the weekend showed the tiny capsule which would be sent down to rescue the trapped miners. However, it won't be easy since the capsule can only carry one person for the long trip back to the service. With the additional plan that would mean the miners would have to climb a ladder out, if the Phoenix capsule fails.
Currently, the miners are going through training to prepare themselves for a escape out of the mine, which will hopefully take place a month from now.
""They have a two kilometre stretch of tunnels. The men are walking the tunnels and some are jogging. We are using US army fitness training, so the men sing while they jog."-Guardian

Work has begun to drill a shaft down to the 33 trapped miners in Chile. They've already been 700m (2,300ft) underground for three weeks and could be stuck there for 4 months. Supplies were given to the miners, who were also allowed phone calls to families but experts were flown in from NASA to help access the possible help needed for the miners stuck in long term isolation.
"Quick-dry clothing has also been sent down, after some of the miners said they were suffering from skin conditions in the hot, wet conditions. Others have been sent mats to sleep on to protect them from the damp ground.
