In some ways, it might seem absurd to call Facebook a state and Mr Zuckerberg its governor. It has no land to defend; no police to enforce law and order; it does not have subjects, bound by a clear cluster of rights, obligations and cultural signals. Compared with citizenship of a country, membership is easy to acquire and renounce http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/425-facebook-stateIn some ways, it might seem absurd to call Facebook a state and Mr Zuckerberg its... more

If you live in a rural area, how would higher bus fares and services affect you? depending on the areas, sometimes the buses are not the best services to rely on but are still important for many people going to work and school.
However with the budget cuts, the Guardian is reporting transport cuts will be felt badly for the bus services and fares in rural areas. "It's a combination of fare increases and reduction in routes available and for many people the challenge of getting into work would be significant."-Guardian quoting Labour MP Angela Smith
Another statement in the article claims cuts to the £500m bus service grant would discriminate against non car users. "Stephen Joseph, CBT's executive director, said: "It will tip the bus industry into a spiral of higher fares and fewer services."-Guardian
I've found bus fares are currently okayish, but the service in rural areas are already limited and out of date, compared to the bus transport in London and Cardiff. If you live in a rural area, how would higher bus fares and services affect you?... more

When Labour's £180bn, 10-year transport plan was unveiled by John Prescott in 2000, there were high expectations that it was to usher in a new era of light rail, road pricing and a much-improved bus service. So what happened

The immigration debate these days looks more like a balance sheet than a political conversation. Reflecting the economic anxieties besieging politicians and voters, two competing views of immigrants emerge: as a vital contributor to the economy or a burden on public resources—as an indispensable cheap labor source or a parasitic scourge. The polemics increasingly revolve around how immigrants can be used, not how they deserve to be treated.
Without a human rights-based counterpoint to the demand-supply rhetoric, lawmakers would be all too willing to cede immigration policy to the corporate gatekeepers of the private sector, while preserving a the structure of inequity.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Immigrants can be assessed in terms of GDP. But the labor movement is founded on the idea that workers must be recognized as more than just units of production. Two-dimensional views of immigrant “contributions” crystallize the assumption that certain neighbors are less deserving of the full breadth of humanity. Is that a privilege to be earned, or an inalienable right?

I always wanted to "see the light." To unearth the secret of piety and understand religion. But no matter how hard I've tried and closed my eyes to see God, when I open them again nothing is different. Someone once said to me, "God's light shines on you." Oh, if it were only true. I'd love to feel the warmth if it were so. But so often I feel cold and alone. These are not my eyes in the photo--but another young woman's. Maybe she is looking into the light of God. I hope so. I wish I could see this magic so many people believe.

Michael shares a story where he deals with the shamelessness and disrespectful nature of some judicial system and social services employees.
U People Stories are stories from regular everyday people, gay, straight, black, white and with varied beliefs who have had been made to feel like the "other". These are the kinds of stories that we all have carried with us; where it would make you cry if you thought about it but makes you laugh when you talk about it.
What the U People Story Archive does is build a bridge of understanding that unifies our struggles while at the same time lifting an emotional weight off the shoulders of the storyteller. These stories are humorous, moving and timeless. They are individually a testament of how discrimination and the emotions that result connect, effect and can change us all.
