Frank Taylor is sailing around the world, using a kite to take aerial photographs of the places he visits. In many cases, his photos are better than the ones in Google Earth. So Google's replacing its old shots with Frank's.
Frank's in the midst of a five year trip around the globe on the Tahina Expedition, an adventure he's taking with his wife and of which Google is a partner (Frank runs the unofficial Google Earth Blog). In May, the expedition stopped on Manihi Atoll in French Polynesia, where Frank used his kite camera to capture shots of a village near the lagoon where they landed. Google recently added those images to Google Earth and Google Maps.
And while Frank's undoubtedly thrilled that his work is improving Google Earth piece by piece, he says the most memorable part of the shoot is meeting the people who lived in the village he photographed:
The best part of this photo shoot was the opportunity it gave us to meet people in the village. We started by parking our dinghy near Fernando's house. Fernando is the guy who helps sailors visiting the island have a really unique experience in Manihi. He is also the leader of the Mormon church at the island, and runs his own pearl farm. Fernando is a great guy and genuinely wants all sailors to have a great visit to Manihi. He let us set up our gear on a table outside his house and even made us some snacks and drinks as we described our plan.
As soon as we set up the kite, people - especially the kids - started walking up to ask what we were doing. Even though we didn't speak their language very well, they soon grasped the concept. The kids all wanted their photo taken, and were particularly excited when I asked them to help pull the string when we were retrieving the kite after our flights.Frank Taylor is sailing around the world, using a kite to take aerial photographs of... more

Google Earth's ocean layers are incredible, and the company has made the feature of their much loved software mobile -- Google Earth 1.1 for (of course) Android has just added their oceans layer. You can zoom around the sea floor, exploring the entire Monterey Bay Canyon, for example, or search through photos and videos from contributors. It's certainly an entertaining and educational way to spend a morning train commute.

In an unprecedented proliferation of public spying, government is casting its watchful eye on millions of ordinary Americans through largely unregulated surveillance cameras trained on public spaces throughout the nation.
A Long Island town is using a new tool to find you without ever setting foot on your property.
Using Google Earth images Riverhead’s Chief Building Inspector Leroy Barnes Jr. eyeballed properties on the Internet and identified those with pools, then compared the list to records of homes with pool permits.
Barnes said he targeted pools – after discussions with town leaders – because of safety concerns. Without permits and the required inspections, pools can be hazards, he said, because there’s no way to tell whether fencing, electric and plumbing work for such pools meets code and state safety regulations.
“Pool safety has always been my concern,” said Barnes, who acknowledged that “a lot of people don’t like the idea of an eye in the sky.”
This has raised concerns with privacy advocates as it may be the first use of Google Earth for such a purpose. A Google representative told Newsday she didn’t know of any specific example of Google Earth being used elsewhere as it has been in Riverhead, and did not respond specifically to whether the company had any concerns about how the town used the service.

Designed as a way to easily show the risks caused by a rise in climate change, the map visualises data from the Met Office and was released by Department of Energy and Climate Climate Change (DECC) and the Foreign Office.
Map: http://www.fco.gov.uk/google-earth-4degrees.kml
It is hoped by the department the map will 'boost public engagement' in climate issues, since the map shows potential rising sea levels, crop failure, drought and heat waves caused by a rise in temperature. Since it is a map, viewers can see how different regions of the world could be effected by climate change.
"So with the Google map it's trying to make it easy for people to understand the science. Launching the map today the chief scientist John Beddington described the criticisms of the climate science as being "saloon bar scepticism", which gives you a sense of who worried the government actually is."-Channel 4 news.Designed as a way to easily show the risks caused by a rise in climate change, the map... more

If there's a buck to be made on bumpin' bellies, the porn industry will make it. Since the early days of enabling one-handed typists to live sadly and vicariously through virtual T&A, they've pushed the boundaries of technology. Tectonic is a sound sculpture created in real time by earthquakes as they occur across the globe. A tightly integrated system between Max/MSP, Google Earth and Ableton Live processes a stream of real-time data that is translated into synthesis and sample playback parameters.
When an earthquake occurs, seismic data is relayed to the system, sound is produced and Google Earth immediately flies to the coordinates of the latest earthquake giving us a visual representation of the newest developments. As multiple earthquakes occur daily, the sculpture builds, enmeshing itself in a complex soundscape of textures and tones - every second, different from the last and never repeating the same stage twice.

It's tempting to assume all explorers now actually just stay at home and idly browse Google Earth on the off chance they'll spot a country that nobody knew existed but apparently they still get out there, travel the world and punch the odd snake in the throat. Do snakes have throats? Are they one long throat?
I digress.
Google Earth *does* play a part in helping scientists and archeologists find out more about far-off places that remain relatively unmapped. Recently a small team of scientists have used the service to explore what they think is El Dorado, an ancient city that people have been trying to find for over 500 years.
The Times reports:
"Three scientists have now come close to doing just that. The journal Antiquity has published a report showing more than 200 massive earthworks in the upper Amazon basin near Brazil’s border with Bolivia. From the sky it looks as if a series of geometric figures has been carved into the earth, but the archeologists and historians who published the report believe these shapes are the remains of roads, bridges, moats, avenues and squares that formed the basis for a sophisticated civilisation spanning 155 miles, which could have supported a population of 60,000. The remains date from AD200 to 1283."
While Google Earth wasn't behind the discovery, it's been crucial in building on the information and finding out more about the area in a way that would have previously involved cost, man power and a fair amount of risk.

Liquid Galaxy is an outgrowth of an older project called Street View Holodeck, which grabbed Street View imagery from all angles to simulate the effect of driving down the road, albeit twitchily, as if you were slightly dosed on some kind of low-grade hallucinogen. Liquid Galaxy takes the same hardware—a rack of anywhere from four to eight HDTVs, mounted vertically—connected to a bay of computers, and lets you fly.Liquid Galaxy is an outgrowth of an older project called Street View Holodeck, which... more

On this site, you can see forecast clouds and precipitation for the next 48 hours. You can fly with Google Earth to your favorite location on the planet and watch what weather is coming your way today and tomorrow.
The product is this: global cloud cover and precipitation rate, forecast by the Meteorological Service of Canada's Global Environmental Multiscale model ( GEM ), are projected onto google earth every 3 hours up to 48 hours; over North America, the higher resolution regional GEM model is used. Model forecasts are updated twice daily.
