Last month California Assemblyman Joel Anderson introduced a bill to limit the amount of detail someone could see on screen using online mapping tools. It also calls for fines of up to $250,000 per day for violating what Anderson describes "as the same level of protections that foreign governments extend to their own citizens."

The port of Nouadhibou is the final resting place of over 300 ships. Unlike the en masse arrival of ships at Mallows Bay, here the number of craft has built up over time, as corrupt officials accepted bribes from boat owners to allow them to dump their vessels in the area1.
The ships are everywhere! Some are rusting on the beaches, some are overturned just metres from local fishing boats, and even more are anchored in deeper waters, either alone or tied together in rafts of up to 9 ships.
There are so many abandoned ships that you have to wonder how the local fishing fleet and commercial vessels navigate safely when leaving the port.2
In an effort to clean up the local environment, several solutions have been put forward for consideration. Of these suggestions, towing the ships to other locations would seem to be just a matter of moving the problem, and blowing them up surely can’t be the best way to improve things! The port of Nouadhibou is the final resting place of over 300 ships. That is amazing
The 130,000 square yard islet of Galesnjak came to prominence after its unusual shape was highlighted on Google Earth.
Even the owner of the uninhabited island - now known as Lovers' Island - didn't realise how perfectly heart-shaped the island off the Croatian coast was until he was swamped with requests from couples to stay there.
It seems many lovers from around the world consider it the ideal spot for a romantic Valentine's Day break.
Vlado Juresko said: "It has been incredible. We think it is the most perfect heart-shaped island in the world. Nobody lives there so if lovers really do want to spend time alone it's the perfect desert island.
"We always thought it looked a bit like a heart but since it's been on Google Earth everyone else has seen it too and the whole world seems to want to stay here."
The island is located in Zadarski Kanal between Zadar and the Island of Pasman.
Croatia is ranked as the 18th most popular tourism destination in the world, proving especially busy during the summer months. That is amazing

Everyone loves a mash up! Ok, maybe not if you're one of those who donated to the controversial Proposition 8 law that saw gay marriage overturned as illegal in California, as they've all just been exposed in a leaked memo.
Those who donated towards the controversial Proposition 8 have been listed, along with their name, address, profession and how much they donated. Something which a few of them might not be over the moon to hear, given how controversial the decision was.
Something similar happened in the UK in December when the UK's 'BNP' list got leaked and subsequently mashed up all over Google Maps, causing outcry in the press.Everyone loves a mash up! Ok, maybe not if you're one of those who donated to the... more

Have you ever wanted to see the exact location of all your friends and family? With Google Latitude now you can. Using google's new gadget/plug-in you can now request to share locations with your friends and keep tabs on them where ever they go. This social networking minded release from Google, which can be used on your phone or computer, appears to be the latest and greatest tool in internet stalking or is it just a convenient way to see if your buddies are in the area? Does "big brother" have to request to see your location or is that readily available to them?
"When you want to see someone on the map you need to ask them to share locations with you. They will receive a request by email to which they need to opt in. One can choose to share one’s location, reject it, or as a compromise, to only see the other party’s location but stay invisible. Then you will find markers with your friend’s icons placed on top of a Google Maps widget, and you can access more info from there. Google also notes that you can share a status message, which synchronizes with Google Talk.
Using just the iGoogle widget without further plugins, you’ll need to update your location manually by entering e.g. your city and country. If you run Google Latitude on your phone (available in 27 countries so far, Google says, allowing you to “call, SMS, IM, or email each other within the app”), Google offers you to have your coordinates be updated automatically. And even if you’re on the computer, Google offers you to download their Gears plugin which they say uses wireless signals to determine your computer’s location. When Latitude tried to determine my location with Gears, it was spot on and put me into my home street."

It's not enough to simply text a friend and ask where they are these days. Thankfully, with Google's (slightly scary) new 'Latitude' addition to Google Maps, now you can find out where they are without them really knowing and turn up to surprise them. The new service allows mobile phone users to share their location with friends and family and spot which of their contacts are nearby. Once signed up, an icon of the user's location, as well as their chums', will appear on Google Maps on their phone.
It's accurate to within a hundred yards or so, and at the moment it's only available on Blackberry phones and devices running Windows Mobile and Symbian 360 but it'll be rolled out to iPhone and Google Android users in the next couple of weeks.
Not quite over that ex and want to gatecrash their romantic lunch with their new partner to confess love and sob into their sleeve? Latitude!
Friends no longer inviting you out on nights but you're not going to let that stop you turning up anyway, if only you knew where they were knocking back the drinks? Latitude!

It seems the Google Maps car really doesn't miss anything, even poor little deer that happen to get in the way of the car.
If you follow the street view down Five Points Road in Rush, NY, the Google Maps pictures show the deer running out into the road, then get hit, followed by it laid by the side of the road, before the Google Maps car pulls over.
Unsurprisingly, that's the end of street view for Five Points Road, it's not sure if it's the end for the deer.It seems the Google Maps car really doesn't miss anything, even poor little deer... more

In perhaps the best visual metaphor of the US's change in administration, the residence of the Vice President, formerly clad in a pixelated mist on Google maps, has now become fully visible.

Google Street View may get a bad rap from some overzealous privacy watchdogs and conspiracy theorists, but it just helped police save a young girl who had been kidnapped over the weekend.
In the case, which involved a woman who allegedly kidnapped her granddaughter, Athol Police Officer Todd Neale managed to track down the missing girl by obtaining coordinates of her cell phone from the phone's carrier. Neale contacted Deputy Fire Chief Thomas V. Lozier who worked with him in trying to figure out exactly where the missing girl was being held.
The two men found that the phone's coordinates kept coming in within 300 feet of each other at an intersection in Virginia. Unfortunately they were located in Massachusetts, so they couldn't just drive to the other side of town to take a look. So they turned to Google.
Using Google Street View, they virtually "looked around" the intersection, when they noticed a large building nearby where the pair might have been staying. They subsequently identified the building as a motel (again with Google), and then confirmed that the motel was nearby using Google's satellite view. The pair notified the Virginia state police of their findings, who then found the 9-year old girl and her grandmother in the motel.

Also included in the update are safari enhancements and bug fixes along with the ability to share your current location within emails. And lastly but definatly not least we have the ability to toggle auto text correction, which I personally think is WELL overdue!
One of the great things about this phone is that there is a big scope for the types of upgrades and future content it has the capability of holding.

Google's very own satellite, the GeoEye-1 is set to take a load of amazingly good resolution pictures for Google Earth - good enough even to read car number plates from orbit (though Google won't be allowed to access those images for security reasons). Google shares the GeoEye-1 with the American National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which collects and analyses geographical data for national security purposes, and who no doubt will be keeping a high-res eye on what Google can and can't post, though it is hoped that this latest satellite will allow Google Maps to display higher-resolution images of rural areas that they previously couldn't get good quality images for.
