DALLAS - The Federal Aviation Administration has received numerous reports of falling debris across Texas, which could be related to a recent satellite collision.
Some of the callers around midmorning Sunday reported what looked like a fireball in the sky.
FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said officials suspect the debris could be related to the collision, but he said that had not been confirmed.

U.S. and Russian officials traded shots Thursday over who was to blame for a huge satellite collision this week that spewed speeding clouds of debris into space, threatening other unmanned spacecraft in nearby orbits.
A prominent Russian space expert suggested NASA fell down on the job by not warning of the collision. But U.S. space experts said the Russian has the wrong agency.U.S. and Russian officials traded shots Thursday over who was to blame for a huge... more

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A privately owned U.S. communications satellite collided with a defunct Russian military satellite in the first such mishap in space, a U.S. military spokesman said on Wednesday.
The crash, which took place on Tuesday above Russia's Arctic north, involved a spacecraft of Iridium Satellite LLC and a Russian communications satellite, said Air Force Colonel Les Kodlick of the U.S. Strategic Command.
"We believe it's the first time that two satellites have collided in orbit," he said, calling the debris potentially a problem that could require more debris-avoidance maneuvers among space-faring nations.
The crash occurred at roughly 485 miles, Kodlick said, an altitude used by satellites that monitor weather, relay communications and perform scientific observations.
"It's a very important orbit for a lot of satellites" and highlighted a need for improved awareness of events taking place in space, Kodlick said.
The command's Joint Space Operations Center is tracking 500 to 600 new bits of debris, some as small as 4 inches across, in addition to the 18,000 or so other man-made objects it previously catalogued in space, Kodlick said.

Two big communications satellites collided in the first-ever crash of its kind in orbit, shooting out a pair of massive debris clouds and posing a slight risk to the international space station. NASA said it will take weeks to determine the full magnitude of the crash, which occurred nearly 500 miles over Siberia on Tuesday.
"We knew this was going to happen eventually," said Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist at Johnson Space Center in Houston.
NASA believes any risk to the space station and its three astronauts is low. It orbits about 270 miles below the collision course. There also should be no danger to the space shuttle set to launch with seven astronauts on Feb. 22, officials said, but that will be re-evaluated in the coming days. Two big communications satellites collided in the first-ever crash of its kind in... more

North Korea may be preparing to test-launch its longest-range ballistic missile, a South Korean official said today, just days after Kim Jong-il's regime warned the peninsula was on the brink of war.
Pyongyang last week scrapped its peace accord and other deals with Seoul. Analysts warned that the move increased the risk of a military clash, but suggested the primary motive was to raise pressure on its neighbour and grab the attention of the new administration in the US.North Korea may be preparing to test-launch its longest-range ballistic missile, a... more

Did you know that other than using hardware, there is another way to watch satellite TV on PC without any messy hardware installation? All it takes is installing a software program and you are ready to watch satellite TV on your pc. Find out how you can do so with special proprietary software. Nope, it is not costly in case you may be wondering. In fact, the price of one or two DVDs is all one has to pay in order to get to enjoy unlimited access to more than 3000 over channels worldwide. TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's space agency will launch a satellite later this month to monitor greenhouse gases around the world, officials said Wednesday, hoping the data it collects helps global efforts to combat climate change.
The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), to be launched on January 21, will enable scientists to calculate the density of carbon dioxide and methane from 56,000 locations on the Earth's surface, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said.
The coverage compares with just 282 land-based observation sites as of last October, said Takashi Hamazaki, manager of the 35 billion yen ($372.9 million) JAXA project.

There are approximately 120 private companies in the world that operate about a third of the thousands of small, orbiting, uninhabited space vehicles commonly known as satellites; none of these companies are American. In the USA, the only entities that are allowed to own and operate satellites -- even if they are used to do scientific research, or to provide commercial services relating to communications, entertainment or weather forcecasting. With some exceptions, military satellites are designed to move in complex elliptical orbits around the earth, so that they can photograph very large areas of the surface.

Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will pinpoint the key locations on the Earth's surface where CO2 is being emitted and absorbed.
CO2 from human activities is thought to be driving climate changes, but important facts about its movement through the atmosphere remain elusive.
"We know where most of the fossil fuel emissions are coming from; we also know where things like cement manufacturing are producing large CO2 emissions," explained Dr Crisp, who works at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
"But there are other things such as biomass (forest) burning and clearing; and we don't have a good quantification of the CO2 released by those processes.
"If you take out the fossil fuels - for which we understand the CO2 source to within 10% - and look at the rest of the carbon dioxide that's introduced into the atmosphere by our activities, it's uncertain by 100%.Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will pinpoint the key locations on the... more

Hello everyone,
Some of you may have tried to tune into channel 366 on DirecTV over the weekend, only to find that Current was no longer there. Gasp! We were a little taken aback by this as well. It turns out that DirecTV was doing some preliminary testing on their end to prepare for our move from channel 366 to channel 358 on 12/3.
Sadly, it turned out that the testing resulted in a bug that caused some of you to lose Current temporarily over the holiday. You'll be happy to know that the bug has been sorted out, and starting 12/3 we will be available on DirecTV at our new listing home: channel 358.
A huge thank you to everyone who sent concerned emails and tweets our way, we're deeply sorry for any confusion this move may have caused. If you're interested in checking out the new DirecTV channel lineup, you can download their .pdf here: http://www.directv.com/see/pdf/chnllineup.pdf?footernavtype=-1
Relieved? Concerned? Let us know what you think with a response below.

In keeping up with technology and the space race, Russia is testing it's new satellite navigation system... on Vladamir Putin's dog Koni. Although satellite-guided positioning technology has been around for a while, Russia is keen to have its own so they created Glonass. It was promised to be fully operational earlier this year, but has been delayed because of equipment flaws.
