A group of prominent musicians are joining a campaign to close Guantanamo Bay and demanding the release of records about what music was used during the potential torture of detainees there and at other facilities.
Some of the more famous names in the music industry are formally lending their prestige to an effort being led by retired generals, progressive groups and a former member of Congress to shut GITMO down. The list includes Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Rise Against, Rosanne Cash, Billy Bragg and the Roots, all of whom are joining the broader National Campaign to Close Guantanamo which was launched earlier in the week.
Hoping to cast further light on the potential illegalities that took place at the detention facility, the group is also working to obtain records about why and how music was used (under laws authorized by the Bush administration) to effectively torture suspected terrorists. The musicians have officially endorsed a Freedom of Information Act request for the declassification of all secret government records pertaining to music utilized during interrogations. At least two members of the coalition, Reznor and Morello, have had their music linked to interrogations.
"Guantanamo is known around the world as one of the places where human beings have been tortured -- from water boarding, to stripping, hooding and forcing detainees into humiliating sexual acts -- playing music for 72 hours in a row at volumes just below that to shatter the eardrums," said Morello, in a statement provided by the NCCG. "Guantanamo may be Dick Cheney's idea of America, but it's not mine. The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me -- we need to end torture and close Guantanamo now."
The National Security Archives will be officially filing the FOIA request on behalf of the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo (NCCG)

Margaret Priebe, an 85-year-old cancer survivor and the new mascot for headbangers worldwide, met her hard-rockin' heroes in Metallica before the band’s Saturday show at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Singer James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich (pictured), bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett all stopped by the “Hood Rat” VIP lounge to meet Priebe, who was featured in a St. Petersburg Times feature on Thursday. Her story quickly became an Internet sensation, and on Friday Metallica officially invited her for a backstage chat.
“The number one Metallica fan!” Ulrich said when he met Priebe, who was joined by her son Jim Priebe, 48. Last year, Margaret battled cancer and chemo; during restless nights, she’d put on her MP3 player and crank Metallica. “You guys put me to sleep,” she told Ulrich, who took it as a compliment.Margaret Priebe, an 85-year-old cancer survivor and the new mascot for headbangers... more

Why hadn’t Metallica ever performed on their home turf of Marin County before this week. Heck, some of ‘em have only been living there 20 years? Maybe because Marin is a cultural backwater populated by aging hippies, former Grateful Dead roadies, former Grateful Dead members, and lots of Deadheads. And a pompous Danish art snob or two. And the dudes from Journey. You get the picture. It’s about time these guys turned up the volume and pissed off the neighbors. Why hadn’t Metallica ever performed on their home turf of Marin County before this... more

I have had this crazy idea for a short web movie for a while now. "Super Smash TV" I won't go into the long details but it would involve real actors and recorded scenes from the actual game. It would be ridiculous and funny. Really all I would need is 3 actors and some way to record the actual game and then just splice the footage together and some cross fades. Great job everybody, and please submit suggestions for the next band on the chopping block. The votes are tallied and you fired Lars (by a landslide). I’ve compiled your... more
Times are tight, and cutbacks aren’t enough. It’s time for layoffs, so each week, we’re giving you a chance to fire a member of a band. Here's how it goes:
1. You watch a video we post from the band on the chopping block.
2. You vote in the comment section for who you think should be fired.
3. You also write a line why they should be fired.
4. We tally the votes and copy & paste together the reasons you all submitted to create the first ever crowd-sourced pink slip/ mad lib and post it on our blog. Here's last week's letter firing Bono http://blogs.current.com/music/2009/04/28/bono-youre-fired/
For instance today’s band is Metallica, so you could write, “Dear Lars, I used to be a huge Metallica fan, but then you sued me for $20,000 after I downloaded one track because the tape I bought when I was 10 was worn out from playing it so much and I just wanted to hear “Harvest of Sorrow,” which I paid for years ago, and now my credit is screwed, and I can’t buy a house, get a loan, or even a credit card. Suck it, you’re fired.“
Also, feel free to suggest bands that need to have someone fired.Times are tight, and cutbacks aren’t enough. It’s time for layoffs, so each week,... more
