Prominent MIT researcher Kerry Emanuel has been receiving an unprecedented "frenzy of hate" after a video featuring an interview with him was published recently by Climate Desk.
Emails contained "veiled threats against my wife," and other "tangible threats," Emanuel, a highly-regarded atmospheric scientist and director of MIT's Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate program, said in an interview. "They were vile, these emails. They were the kind of emails nobody would like to receive."
"What was a little bit new about it was dragging family members into it and feeling that my family might be under threat, so naturally I didn't feel very good about that at all," Emanuel said. "I thought it was low to drag somebody's spouse into arguments like this."
Climate Desk has seen a sample of the emails and can confirm they are laced with menacing language and expletives, and contain personal threats of violence.
Emanuel began receiving emails "almost immediately" after the video was posted on Jan. 5, and the volume peaked at four or five emails a day. The threats have now petered off.
Threats are nothing new in the world of climate science. But Emanuel was surprised by the viciousness of the emails. "I think most of my colleagues and I have received a fair bit of email here and there that you might classify as ‘hate mail,' but nothing like what I've got in the last few days."
"This was a little more orchestrated this time," he said.
The video -- "New Hampshire's GOP Voters Speak Out About Climate Change" -- documented a climate change conference run by a group of Republican voters upset by their party's anti-science rhetoric. Emanuel was a keynote speaker, along with former Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.), who, incidentally, has not received any threats since the video.
In one clip, Emanuel says, "It makes me feel to some extent disgusted with politics and to some extent ashamed to be an American."
The comments were seized upon, Emanuel suspects, by "bloggers bent on distorting that message and amplifying it." One website, Climate Depot, posted Emanuel's email address.
Emanuel notes that in the full video, he went on to explain that the Republican candidates "have either been misled, in which case it's not great to be part of the political system where candidates for the president of the United States could be so misled on such an important issue, or they were dishonest, which [is] equally bad in my view: How could we live in a country where candidates are being dishonest about an issue of such importance?"
Another website, Junk Science, raised questions about his wife's anti-war feelings in the 1960s.
"Somebody came to the conclusion that back in the '60s she was a Marxist -- which she was back then," Emanuel said. He notes that "conservative heroes of today like Norman Podhoretz [and] Jeane Kirkpatrick" were also socialists in the '60s. "So I don't quite know what the problem was there!"

Cynthia McKinney ..... Thanks to all who have come out and participated in the Truth Tour. I have almost come to its end. Last night in Detroit, several of the women were moved to tears as I explained the situation in Libya right now as I know it to be. Every venue has had every seat occupied or was filled to capacity with standing room only. Detroit's young singer and band, Sister Ziyah and Black Rain were phenomenal and their music set the tone for the event: first song, Kickstart the Revolution; second song, Good Morning, America; third song, Today, I'm a Better Me. This Truth Tour has been unique because the true peace people in this country have revealed themselves by their willingness to step forward and be counted against this war in the very midst of the worst deceit and demonization ever. NATO war crimes are being excused, discounted, or covered up by those who posed as supporters of justice and peace. It is never OK to bomb people. And it is never OK to ask the peace-loving people of this country to sacrifice Social Security and Medicare and education and housing--and I could go on and on--so that war profiteers can fatten their ill-gotten coffers. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43002-libya-truth-tourCynthia McKinney ..... As it becomes ever so increasingly clear that the mega corporations and banks have not only been systematically committing crimes against humanity, the earth, individual nations, and national treasures, specifically engineering massive financial losses to the public, perpetrating massive frauds upon the public, creating international financial crisis and hardships, and even instigating and engineering international conflicts and war, these mega corporations and banks are de facto enemies of the PEOPLE of the world. As enemies of the people of the world, we are obliged and compelled to boycott and never purchase products with well known labels that belong to mega corporations. It is our patriotic and humane duty to identify and purchase products made by smaller socially responsible companies and individual proprietors. While this alone will not stop or correct the sins and evils which these criminal and predatory corporations and banks do to earth and it's inhabitants, it will be one very effective prong in a multiple prong resistance to their march for world domination. Buy generic and small socially responsible labels only. Let's at least make an effort to bankrupt our enemies!

Famed crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger arrested in Santa Monica
June 22, 2011 | 8:35 pm
Legendary Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who has been on the run for more than a decade, was arrested Wednesday in Santa Monica, multiple law enforcement sources told The Times.
Bulger, 81, has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for "The Departed," a 2006 Martin Scorsese film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.
Bulger fled Boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with 21 killings, racketeering and other crimes that spanned the early 1970s to the mid-1980s.
He was arrested by the FBI inside a building without incident, according to the sources, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. The details surrounding his arrest were unclear Wednesday night.
The FBI in Los Angeles declined to comment.
The arrest came as the FBI launched a media campaign in 14 cities to help determine Bulger's whereabouts.
The last credible sighting of Bulger was in London in 2002, the FBI said.Crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger arrested

Since posting a commentary on the question of whether legislators should be held accountable for treasonous acts against the people, or, "aiding the enemy", in the same manner as Bradley Manning is being held accountable for "aiding the enemy", a commenter has asked if I'm promoting the use of violence in our efforts to reclaim government control.
This author does not promote violence, period. However, I can certainly understand how many desperate people may be , and probably will be, driven to some form of violence, either against bankers who defrauded them and turned them out of their homes, legislators who betray them and vote their public services away, industrialists who poison them or their environments and businesses which steal their pensions and then ship their jobs overseas. In truth, I have several times emailed our President suggesting that people are so desperately on the ropes of despair, without reason for hope of a better tomorrow and verging on a rage which is very likely to lead to widespread violence, in hopes that he can and will act quickly to remedy this tragedy. It is testimony to the good character of the American people, alone, that they have not already shot Supreme Court Justices who have betrayed America, legislators who help corporate America to steal their money and business which abuses them. This, in my opinion, is nearly miraculous restraint on the public's part. Because, surely, the crimes committed against the people to date, have already warranted the greatest of resentment and anger amongst the public.
The use of force in the public take back of our government from the corporate forces, is another question entirely. Force can manifest in many forms, and none of them necessarily violent. The Wisconsin 14 remaining out of Walker's clutches and manipulation, combined with the recall movement of his compatriots, may force him to negotiate and make concessions which he, otherwise, swore that he would not do. If this nation, and hopefully the world, participate in the May 5th, INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WORK STOPPAGE, to the point that it brings all commerce, government, air transport and even telecommunications to a standstill, then that may force the hands which are holding the nooses around the public's neck, to loosen their grip, even just a bit. Other subsequent public actions may force the noose right out of their hands. This type and form of force, I do wholly support and recommend. This type of force is the only way that I believe we can reclaim our heritage, our government, our wealth and our greater dignity, all of which are owed to us.
For example:
Dear Paratus,
Thank you for your concern and engagement. While I am not familiar with shio nage, at all, we have already witnessed the taking and using of weapons to political events. We have already witnessed the assassinations, and attempted assassinations, of political figures. It has been suggested that the perpetrators of these past episodes of violence were mentally unstable. While my comments have not intentionally referenced such actions, while your's have, we all may be well served to consider that the widespread desperation of our fellow citizens, today, may have already destabilized the mental normalcy of many. Therefore, there may be many, from both sides of the aisle, who are contemplating taking weapons of destruction to political events, and using them against political figures. Unfortunately, these are not possibilities which can be resolved by our blogging, but rather, can, and should, be resolved by our political figures.
It seems to me that our exchange has blurred and merged two issues which are not necessarily codependent. The legitimate discussion of appropriate and legal means of holding our legislators accountable for their actions, does not imply, or equate to, the unbridled exchange of gunfire between those who much has been taken from, and the Right which insists on taking more from them. Although, I acknowledge that such is very likely to occur, sooner than later, under the prevailing conditions of the public's deprivation and consequent desperation. If such bloodshed does occur, it will be between the people, who can psychologically take no more abuse, and the "classic goons" and "mercenaries", hired by those determined to steal anything of value which the people have left. Mere ideology of the mentally stable rarely lead to the kind of bloodshed which you reference.
P.S. While I support the right to bear arms, and encourage all to do so, to protect ourselves from rogue governments, I personally do not yet own a gun or any weapon. But I am considering acquiring one.Since posting a commentary on the question of whether legislators should be held... more

A third man involved in a paedophile ring which police say abused dozens of girls has been convicted of sex crimes.

Police described the abuse by the men in the Camborne area, found in a three-year investigation, as "horrific". One victim was five years old.
Two girls were abused by the same three men, the court heard.
John Barrett, 49, from the Camborne area, abused two girls, who were aged five and seven when the crimes first started, and passed them on to John Wrey to do the same.
On Friday a jury of seven men and five women decided, after two days of deliberations, that Machin was also guilty of similar sex offences against the girls which Barrett had passed on to him.
Machin, 54, from Falmouth, who was arrested in June 2009 and had denied all 10 counts, has yet to be sentenced.
However, the judge, Christopher Elwen, said it was likely the sentence would be longer than Barrett's 14 years.
The court heard that the men left messages for each other in public toilets.
It was also told that Barrett and Machin took two young girls to a house at Flushing, near Falmouth, where they abused them.
The girls were given cigarettes and sometimes had to sniff drugs during their ordeals.
The court heard that hours before Barrett was arrested, he phoned Machin to warn him that the net was closing in.
Machin then tried to cover his tracks by steam-cleaning the inside of his black Mercedes van.
Alan Wills abused the same two girls as the three other men.
He also tried to erase the hard drives of two laptops which contained child pornography.
No link was established between Wills and the others, the court heard, but the pair of victims were abused by all four men.
Wills, 46, also from Camborne, was jailed for 16 years earlier this month for abusing a total of seven victims.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the inquiry, named Operation Lakeland, was one of the largest and most complex sex abuse investigations it had ever dealt with.
The chief investigating officer, Det Insp Simon Snell, said detectives had spoken to 30 victims and that there were real concerns there could be more.
Speaking after the Machin case, he added: "They are despicable, horrible, nasty individuals who preyed on vulnerable young children.
"My heart goes out to those children.
"I don't think they will ever get over this absolutely appalling abuse by the men involved."

Dr. Robert Hare claims there are 300,000 psychopaths in Canada, but that only a tiny fraction are violent offenders like Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olsen. Who are the rest? Take a look around....
According to popular wisdom, psychopaths are crazed and bloodthirsty serial killers. The reality is not so simple. While many psychopaths do commit violent crimes, not all psychopaths are criminals and not all criminals are psychopathic. Psychopaths are found in many walks of life and are often successful in competitive professions. However they are also ruthless, manipulative and destructive. Equinox reports on techniques developed by psychologists to work out whether a person is psychopathic and shows how brain scientists are coming close to mapping the malfunctions in the brain that cause a person to be a psychopath.
In Britain one person in 200 is likely to be a psychopath. However psychopaths are thought to be responsible for half of all reported crimes and to make up between 15% and 20% of the prison population. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/11914-psychopaths-among-usDr. Robert Hare claims there are 300,000 psychopaths in Canada, but that only a tiny... more

Pope Benedict apologized to victims of sexual abuse on Saturday, saying pedophile priests had brought "shame and humiliation" on him and the entire Roman Catholic Church.
Opponents say that he needs to do more to atone for the crimes of Catholic priests: some demand that he turn over names and more information to police so that they can be effectively prosecuted by the state, others insist that his words are "PR not penitence".
What do you think the church needs to do to really deal with this problem? Let's try and avoid ranting and raving in favor of real opinions--well, what do you think?

With 2.3 million people in America's prison system, we've literally become our own jailers. It's time to call for a compassionate -- and more effective -- judicial system.
June 16, 2010 |
Editor's Note: This article is based on the author's new book, Beyond Vengeance, Beyond Duality, published by Hampton Roads.
Our criminal justice system is based on a curious set of rules and a double moral standard. The state’s burden of proving guilt is pitted against the accused’s right to thwart such proof. The state claims to be the victim because its law has been broken, but if the accused lacks the resources of O. J. Simpson or Paris Hilton to defend himself, he feels victimized by the state, and too often is.
What about repairing the harm done to the other victim, the person who was robbed or raped? The prosecutor’s job is to win the case and punish the accused, not make the victim whole. This means the victim’s role is reduced to that of a mere witness for the state in its battle to win by making the accused lose. For the accused to win, defense counsel must try to make the victim appear as untruthful as possible. Caught in the middle of the attorneys’ battle to win and make their adversary lose, the victim often feels revictimized. If a plea agreement makes a trial unnecessary, this victim becomes irrelevant.
Is this a good system for getting at the truth? About 130 death sentences have been commuted since 1973 because evidence later proved these people were innocent. Is the prosecutor’s win more important than the truth about the guilt of the defendant? In many of these 130 cases, the answer was yes. Sam Millsap, a former Texas prosecutor, now speaks openly of having sent an innocent man to death by presenting weak evidence that later proved to be false. Does this deserve to be called justice?
There is a better way, a form of justice that delivers fairness, mends broken relationships, and helps us get at the root causes of crime. There is, in fact, justice beyond vengeance.
Becoming Our Own Jailers
“Get tough on crime” has been a common mantra in the U.S. since the 1970’s and, indeed, we have. We now have over 2.3 million people locked up on any given day, approximately the same number as China and Russia combined. More than one in every one hundred adults in America is presently in jail or prison. Nationally, our prison industrial complex is a $60 billion-a-year industry.
This incarceration binge is destroying the fabric of our communities, some more than others. One in every 15 African American men lives in a prison or jail cell. If you are an African American male between the ages of 20 and 34, the ratio is one in nine. Hispanics are disproportionately affected as well. As of 2006, one in 36 Hispanic adults was behind bars.
Over the last 30 years more acts have been classified as crimes, many prison sentences have become mandatory, as well as longer, and early release for good conduct has been all but eliminated. Some defense attorneys advise their clients to plead guilty to crimes they didn’t commit, reasoning that a short sentence for a lesser crime is better than risking decades behind bars that would be mandated if convicted of a more serious offense.
