There are many animals today that are nearing extinction. It is becoming more and more important that we found a way to raise awareness about this problem. A zoo in Philadelphia has found an interesting way to raise awareness about endangered species while appealing to its young crowd. Legos.
The Philadelphia Zoo has opened a lego exhibit that displays many different endangered species. The exhibit is called "Creatures of Habitat: A Gazillion-Piece Animal Adventure," and it opened today. Created by Sean Kenney, the exhibit has 34 animals and took over a year to complete.
The highlight of the exhibit is a 95,000 piece polar bear.
"I love being able to explain serious problems in ways that kids can understand them," says Kenney.

Strange bedfellows: artists look to regulators for help
by Jason C. McLean
It’s funny how one time enemies can become allies. For years, the FCC was always the enemy of the artist, censoring for outdated reasons at what seemed like the drop of the hat. Meanwhile in Canada, the CRTC was an ineffective though annoying entity that was supposed to defend the interests of Canadian content creators but instead only helped Canadian networks make money off American shows.
Old foe of the artists: FCC logo
Fast-forward to today, where pretty much all media seems to be moving online. The CRTC is still ineffective and playing the same game when it comes to helping only the distributors while the FCC has gone from this:
to the last hope for independent voices to get their message out in the US.
Net Neutrality, the principle that all content on the internet can be accessed equally, has been threatened recently by internet service providers throttling users in Canada and blocking certain types of content in the US. In Canada, the CRTC ruled that ISPs couldn’t throttle users except as a “last resort” while the FCC, under the guidance of Barack Obama, ruled that Comcast couldn’t block certain content.
As ineffective as always: CRTC logo
Unfortunately, a US Federal Appeals Court ruled that the FCC didn’t have the proper authority to make such a ruling. This is unfortunate for all independent artists and content producers in the US and those looking for an audience in the states. It also sets a bad precedent for other countries because of the influence American culture has on the rest of the western world.
Even though the ruling in question dealt specifically with a company blocking users of Bit Torrent, the principle is what really matters. If you allow ISPs the right to decide what content people can and can’t access, what’s to stop them from blocking content from competitors or using their power to make it, once again, a battle for those without funding or with “undesireable” ideas just to get their stuff seen, read or heard.
The Young Turks explain this pretty succinctly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbAoRZJyoJI
and Democracy Now goes into greater detail on how this ruling may turn out to work against Comcast and other like-minded ISPs by forcing the government to give the FCC full authority to regulate the internet:
While the thought of more regulation may seem a little scary, the thought of profit-minded companies, some of them with their own media interests, being allowed to determine what content is accessible is even more frightening as it would destroy the great equalizing power of the internet. In fact, you might not even be able to watch the two clips above or read this article if Net Neutrality is done away with.
So, for now, independent content creators and agencies like the FCC and CRTC have to live as strange bedfellows.

As an inspiration to all creative types toiling in anonymity, Björn Johansson serves as a beacon of hope. Creator of Internet sensation Big-Ass Message, Johansson attributes his success as a graphic designer to this project and other impassioned (though seemingly dead-end) side projects. Now he freelances full-time for Ogilvy & Mather, one of eight largest advertising networks in the world.
Johansson got the gig after an NYC Ogilvy & Mather exec saw Johansson's website Bjernies, which he started for fun with his buddy Johan "Ernie" Öhrn. Among several other great web "experiments," the collaboration spawned Big-Ass Message, a site that creates—you guessed it—very large messages.
Type in 48 characters or fewer, choose a style (such as Magic, Heart or Jprdy), and Big-Ass Message creates a simple full-screen web message with its own link that you can email. Whether wishing a giant happy birthday or sending vehement insults, the site has already proven wildly popular with traffic reaching over three hits per second at times.
For the future, Johansson intends to continue working on BAM. "My focus right now is to keep developing it. Next on the list is to add more accented characters that are used in Portuguese [Due to BAM's popularity in Brazil]. And I'm also trying to figure out the best way to add more typographic styles. The whole BAM project basically started as an excuse for me to work with big typography online, so I really look forward to coming up with new cool styles."As an inspiration to all creative types toiling in anonymity, Björn Johansson... more

In this episode, I'm chatting about e-learning with the folks at NogginLabs, a Chicago based company that develops innovative e-learning software for companies ranging from banks to fast food restaurants to therapist practices.
The music featured during the intro and credits of this episode is a song called “Fess Up, Face Down” from local Chicago band Blane Fonda.
NogginLabs builds e-learning software applications for that the learner takes at a computer. Here are some highlights from our chat about e-learning and being creative:
- NogginLabs has always had a very strong focus on hiring creative writers, rather than technical writers. This allows them to create well rounded, realistic characters and storylines within their e-learning software.
- When NogginLabs first started as a business, co-owners Traci and Brian kept their client base diverse to ensure a steady income stream. What started as a way to protect the company has turned into a critical part of what makes the company and it's employees creative and well rounded.
- The folks at NogginLabs are great at creating real life based training that is unique compared to the other products in the e-learning space today.
- Everybody at NogginLabs is encouraged to be creative, leading to a more inspiring and creative workplace. Most have their own creative endeavours outside work, like improv and writing.
- Employees at NogginLabs are encouraged to "make it cool".
- The little things are very important. Sound effects and background music aren't necessarily required for e-learning products but they add greatly to the overall user experience. In this episode, I'm chatting about e-learning with the folks at NogginLabs, a... more

Fancy of mind finds outlet in many ways and art is one of them. Sometimes it says so much to us through images and sculptures that we need no textual description.
