...Text messaging is also a channel for people to share feelings without the awkwardness whether it is confessing a crush or asking someone out on a date. But that being said, there are some DON’Ts in texting that people still do. Here’s a short but definitely not a full list of Text Etiquette to help avoid sending the wrong message via text since there’s “UNDOING” a text message… Not to mention you are forced to enter your thoughts and message into the limited character sms. Inside the supermarket, uniformed workers are stacking pineapples into neat rows across from bundles of fresh mustard greens, tamarind pods and nopalitos — sliced cactus ears common in Mexican dishes. In much of the country, Farmers Best Market would not be an extraordinary sight. But here on 47th Street, a gritty stretch of Chicago's South Side flush with Golden Arches and purveyors of Colt 45 Malt Liquor, the store is an oasis. It's also raising an intriguing proposition: Can an inner-city supermarket profitably specialize in fresh produce and meats — and, ultimately, be a model solution to urban America's health crisis?
For years, major supermarket chains have been criticized for abandoning densely populated, largely black and Latino communities in cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, Memphis and Newark, N.J. — contributing to what many experts call food deserts. Many of these communities are, quite literally, starving for broader and healthier food options beyond the seemingly ubiquitous fast-food chains and corner stores selling barely a handful of fruits and vegetables — at relatively high prices.
Simply put, people eat what is convenient and affordable — and if it's fat-heavy fast food, that's what they'll chow down on. The prevalence of obesity among American youth overall increased to 16.3% in 2006, from 5% in 1980, but some 28% of non-Hispanic black females between ages 12 and 19 are obese, as are about 20% of Mexican-American females (the statistic for non-Hispanic white females in the same age group is 14.5%). In congressional testimony earlier this year, a top official from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified food deserts as a cause of these grim statistics.
Experts have declared roughly half of Detroit (pop. 916,000) a food desert and estimate that nearly 633,000 of Chicago's 3 million residents live in neighborhoods either lacking or far away from conventional supermarkets like Jewel, Pathmark and Winn-Dixie. The paucity of affordable, healthy food options in urban communities is ironic in a country with an abundance of food. "Everyone deserves to eat," says Mari Gallagher, president of the National Center for Public Research, a Chicago group that studies urban issues. The crisis, she adds, "really is a matter of life and death."Inside the supermarket, uniformed workers are stacking pineapples into neat rows... more

I went to the skate store with a friend the other day, to kill some time before we went to hang-out at the arcade, and while there we decide to check out the sneakers they had. The guy at the counter started talking about the classics they had when he used to skate back in the US.
So I thought instead of write a novels-worth of dialogue, I should present you with a history of the different Skater kicks.

While the Pac-Man themed version of this mobile LED light show is pretty genius, the programmable kit allows for any number of other clever combos or other bitmapped images for animated self-expression on wheels. Adding safety to boot, the DIY project is not for the tech-challenged, requiring basic programming and soldering skills to create the custom images for either regular size or smaller wheels.
Fortunately, a Spoke POV website offers instructions and the kits, available in red, yellow and blue start at about $100 per wheel from Adafruit.

"The African American World Cultural Center Inc. said Monday that its board voted March 23 to dissolve as an organization, ending plans to build a community-owned cultural center in Milwaukee.
The organization will cease to exist as of April 15. A small remaining portion of donated proceeds will be distributed among African-American arts organizations Ko-thi Dance Company, Hansberry Sands Theatre Company, African American Children’s Theatre Company and African World Festival.
"We have given it our all since the fall of 1996, however, the current economic times have forced us to realize the only option we have is to terminate the organization’s efforts to build this cultural facility," said Tyrone Dumas, AAWCC board chairman.
The proposed African American World Cultural Center, which was originally planned for Johnsons Park at North 17th Street and West Fond du Lac Avenue, had been in the planning stages since 1996. The site was selected due to its connection with the Underground Railroad. A historical marker just east of the Johnsons Park site refers to a farmhouse owned by abolitionist Rev. Samuel Brown that was used as a safe haven by runaway slaves.
Difficulty raising sufficient funds stalled the original plan, so an alternative site in the Bronzeville cultural and entertainment district north of downtown Milwaukee was proposed in 2006 with the hope that it would breathe new life into the project.""The African American World Cultural Center Inc. said Monday that its board voted... more

"If Salt Lake County is able to follow its new master plan, arts lovers could see cultural hubs in the suburbs, upgrades to beloved amphitheaters from Murray to Draper, the reincarnation of a defunct sugar factory in West Jordan and a film center in the capital's downtown.
Dueling visions of a 2,500-plus-seat playhouse in Salt Lake City or Sandy might even have a shot at county funds. But those proposals were given less weight in the plan, which concluded the demand for Broadway entertainment in Utah is being met.
On Tuesday, the County Council unanimously agreed to "accept" the $300,000 blueprint that will guide the multimillion-dollar development and use of arts venues for decades to come.
Midvale Mayor JoAnn Seghini, who helped shape the plan, told the council she was impressed by the willingness of arts groups to share facilities, when possible.
"What we found out ... is there is a great appetite for facilities of any size all over our county that will allow people to get together and experience the arts," she said. "It was overwhelming."
Prepared by AMS Planning & Research's California office, the master plan provides an inventory of 130 existing cultural facilities, which the county plans to make available online. The study also recommends the county consider helping 16 potential projects to join the lineup, although all proposals are welcome to apply for county funds.
About half the "master-plan projects," including a film center and Ballet West academy, are in Salt Lake City, which is deemed the county's "cultural core."
But the study envisions three suburban regional cultural centers, similar in size to Salt Lake City's Rose Wagner Center, four amphitheater upgrades, a renovation of Magna's historic Empress Theatre and a transformation of West Jordan's defunct sugar factory into an arts center.
That geographic breadth demonstrates the study's "very balanced approach," County Council Chairman Joe Hatch said in an interview.
"Most significant arts facilities should be centered in downtown Salt Lake," Hatch said. "In addition, though, [the plan concluded] that there is a huge crying need for smaller, regional cultural facilities throughout the county."
The $300,000 study -- the LDS Church kicked in $100,000 of the county's tab -- did not answer one mega-question: Should a mega-theater be built in Salt Lake City or Sandy?""If Salt Lake County is able to follow its new master plan, arts lovers could see... more

'WEAPONS? DISCUSS...' is a consultation film made in collaboration with young people across Leeds. This film spearheads AMI's commitment to spreading the weapons awareness message amongst young people all over the UK. The project was born out of our desire to provide targeted participants with a programme of activity that could help them improve upon their existing ICT skills, whilst collaborating to produce a resource for weapons awareness practitioners within the community, as well as supporting emerging musical artists from around the city. The film features on a forthcoming DVD project aimed directly at schools and youth groups. This film stands in stark contrast to the majority of films exploring the issue of gun and knife crime amongst Britain's young people as it was created through direct consultation with young people. The film provides tthe young people with the oppurtunity to articulate their opinions on the causation, culture, and future of gun and knife crime, and thus the film offers an insightful view into the reality of the issue. The film was graded in a monochrome black and white and it was shot with high specification prime lenses.

’THESE STREETS’ is a music promo that we completed as part of a DVD-based weapons awareness project. It was commissioned by Leeds City Council through their ERDF funded RouteMap project and co-financed by ourselves at the start of 2008. This project was born out of our desire to provide a high quality resource for weapons awareness practitioners within Leeds and West Yorkshire. The project also gave targeted participants a programme of activity that helped them develop their ICT skills and an opportunity to be a part of something positive. A secondary aim of the project was to support local musicians and artists by creating two broadcast quality video promos that we hoped would raise their profile and promote the weapons awareness agenda at the same time. All the films in this project are dedicated to the memory of our friend, Pat Regan - the brightest light in the campaign against gun and knife crime. The beats for this track were produced by Tom Stewart (Breaking The Illusion), whilst the artists collaborating on the track are Kockee K, Low-Key (Yorkshire Terrierz), Dogge (Yorkshire Terrierz), Norty, K-One (CAG), Lady Ai (Afro Physics) and Pat herself. Biographies of the featured artists and the track as a fee downloadable MP3 can be found on the project myspace page –

Please hold a moment while we check our calendars. Nope, it's definitely not April 1. That must mean a General Motors tie-up with Segway must be true. The Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (P.U.M.A. for short) will seek to develop a self balancing two-wheeled vehicle capable of reaching speeds of 35 mph – well above the Segway's 12 mph top speed -- for 35 miles.
Instead of the more common single track of a motorcycle, this electric vehicle will borrow the side-by-side arrangement popularized on the original Segway Personal Transporter. A lithium battery will store enough charge to allow the vehicle to travel for up to 35 miles on a single charge. Another interesting feature is the expected ability for each machine to communicate with vehicles around it, reducing the risk of accidents and regulating the flow of traffic.
Cost isn't yet set, but initial projections would place the total cost of ownership for the two-passenger autonomous vehicle at about a quarter of the price of a traditional automobile. The P.U.M.A. project will make its official debut at the New York Auto Show this week.

How do you count homeless people?
Why would you count homeless people?
7 years old is the average age of someone homeless in LA.
This new startling statistic is a sign of a changing homeless population.
Children are the fastest growing homeless demographic, along with their mothers, who have to sleep in their car or on the streets. The changing economy is presenting changing data.
Every two years the government obtains updated data on a city's homeless population. It is with this data that policy makers allocate appropriate funds to the streets, shelters, and blocks that desperately need it the most.
But where does this data come from? It isn't gathered by government workers, but by common volunteers with efficient execution and organization.
This group took on counting the homeless of Los Angeles as their mission, and the streets of Skid Row became their urban field.
Daniel Polk reports on why everybody counts. How do you count homeless people?

"If running up and over obstacles, including concrete walls and railings, sounds like fun, you could be a traceur practicing Parkour.
Parkour is defined as the art of movement but it's more about using the concrete block or staircase as a brace or vault to get over, around or through to the next step or block.
"It's the ability to go wherever I want," said Tyler Teigen, a 17-year-old who practices Parkour, or a traceur. "I don't have any particular rules, and there's no competition involved. Everybody is just a family."
He is one of a handful of students learning how to run up walls, land a back flip and use his arms to cross over an obstacle. That's a move called a Kong. Four and a half years ago, Teigen's instructor was nearly alone.
"When we first started there was maybe six to seven of us," said instructor Brian Taylor. "Now there's 200- to 300-plus and growing."
"Good technique prevents injury, and that's what we teach here is good technique. It's easier to do a move if you know every working part of the move instead of just haphazardly hucking yourself into something. We learned the hard way by falling down, and we are here to prevent our students from learning the way that we had to learn," Taylor said.
It's not quite "free running" but many traceurs say they do both. And they do not want to see this discipline in the Olympics, or even the X-Games.
They simply push themselves and each other.""If running up and over obstacles, including concrete walls and railings, sounds... more
