World Cup International! The Top 5 Places To Watch The Football In London

Personally, I try not to form strong emotional attachments to England (I support Spurs, which takes up all the enthusiasm I can muster for habitually disappointing teams wearing white). So I’m going to take advantage of our metropolis – the most cosmopolitan in the world – and watch it with foreign fans instead. Here, in no particular order, are some picks:
1. Hard Rock Café 150 Old Park Lane, W1K 1QZ
My choice for England’s opening match. Like a Continental forward flinging himself to the turf under the faintest of touches, it may look as if I’m cheating, but, I figure that you have to watch England somewhere, and it may as well be in a US stronghold. Go, eat fries and burgers, and talk knowledgeably about ‘soccer’ while the Yanks attempt to win a game – something they failed to do in 2006.
2. Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix35-47 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6LA
Bethnal Green’s Rich Mix showed some pretty lively African Nations Cup games back in January, and hopefully the World Cup will see the same atmosphere. For 25 nights there’ll be bands from London’s African communities, DJs and football on a 10’x15’ screen.
3. Camino 3 Varnishers Yard, N1 9FD
Spain are a good bet to go all the way, and you won’t be disappointed if you pick this King’s Cross bar for the duration. BBC Radio 5 will be broadcasting live from Camino during Spain games, and £80 buys you a well-placed table, 12 beers and paella for four. There’ll also be a giant screen in the yard.
4. Bincho 16 Old Compton Street
This Japanese restaurant in Soho will be showing Japan’s matches on screens in the bar and, for every goal Japan score, they’ll be giving punters a free glass of warm sake. Back of the net.
5. Bar Italia 22 Frith Street, W1D 4RP
I thought about a lesser team for the final pick (step forward Slovenia, whose countrymen will be colonising The Colonies pub in St James for three games), but Bar Italia is an institution. It will be absolutely packed with London’s Italian community, and, if Italy make a good showing, emotions will run high as the tournament progresses.

Honourable mention number one goes to Wahaca. The upmarket Mexican will give free food to those wearing the Mexico shirt – and, if you stand on the terrace at their Canary Wharf restaurant, I’m reliably informed that giant public screens will be in full view. So eyes and stomachs both win.
And, finally, honourable mention number two goes to Jetlag. Still relatively new to Fitzrovia, it’s nevertheless already made a big impression. In the downstairs (departure?) lounge, you can relax on chaise longues, watch on an HD projector and choose from a dizzying array of World Cup-themed beer and street food, including Brazilian coxinhas, Greek souvlaki, Japanese Asahi and Kiwi Steinlager Pure. There’s a £25 minimum spend but, with their around-the-world-ticket cocktail package (4 for £25), that shouldn’t be difficult.

Top 5 London bars (that happen to have great loos)

There’s already a top five places to go when you need the toilet super urgently on here, so I thought I’d write up some places that have something a little bit special about their bogs, for when you’re out on the town. Here are five bars that have something a unique in their little boys’ and girls’ rooms.
Railway Tavern
This pub right opposite Liverpool Street Station is a bit grubby. It really is. I used to go there when me and my mates were 16 and would go to London from Essex and realised the big city was scary so go straight to first pub we saw. The reason this place has an interesting toilet is if you go to the furthest sit down toilet in the gents and look through the vent under the cistern, you can see directly on to the Circle Line platform at Liverpool St Underground. Which is a bit weird isn’t it?
Bourne and Hollingsworth
When I first came to Bourne and Hollingsworth it was really hard to find the toilets - they had done that thing where they wallpapered the door as well as the wall so it was quite hard to find. Now it’s been there a while the door pokes out a bit more, but that’s not what makes it good. It’s because when you get into the musty toilets in this basement bar, you’ll find a treasure trove of really old books and bric-a-brac. It’s like doing your business in the corner of an antique store.
Swan & Edgar
This is actually owned by the same guy who owns Bourne & Hollingsworth and I guess he likes his drinking establishments to have fine conveniences, because this literary pub (the bar’s made out of stacks of books) has a toilet made entirely out of Scrabble tiles. Which is a really nice sober, but makes you feel a bit sick when you’re really drunk and trying to focus.
Hurst House
Alright - this is a bit la-di-da as you have to be either a member or with a member to get in, but the men’s toilet’s walls, ceiling and floor and completely covered in a massive, continual Ordinance Survey map. So if you’re in there on your own, having a pee, you may or may not forget what you’re doing as you search for your street and realise too late you’ve just pissed all over Kennington.
Hoxton Hotel
The Hoxton Hotel toilet is massive, the stalls are big and nice so you actually feel obliged to go try and have a number two, there’s an ice bucket and shovel that you have to shovel into the trough after having a pee (apparently it’s an American thing and stops any smells or something) and they don’t lock down their posh squirty soaps so they’re quite easy to take home and make your own bathroom look a bit classier.

Cocaine Mafia: Coke's huge market in Europe and the African supply chain that gets it there

I grew up hearing about Colombian drug cartels dumping huge amounts of cocaine into the United States to feed America’s insatiable craving for the fine white powder that made entertainers and socialites feel amazingly cool. Our government went to war against drugs with billions of dollars and helicopters, social programs and guns. Eventually, for lots of reasons, cocaine use trailed off in the United States. In recent years the drug lords have seen their trade route through the Caribbean produce fewer mansions, private armies and the lifestyle of kings. But they found a new market.

In recent years, Europe has been consuming more cocaine than anywhere else in the world. So I headed there to find out how all that coke was getting into Europe.

Unlike the US, where coke was associated with high rollers and the rich and famous, cocaine today is the European everyman’s drug. We found it in pubs in England, public bathrooms in Italy and wherever young people gather to have a good time. The UK, Italy, and Spain have become the largest consumers of cocaine in the world. The bulk of it still comes from South America, but the trade route has changed. In order to meet their growing demand, South American drug lords use West Africa as their crucial transit point to get the drug into the European Union. With chronic poverty, rampant corruption and loose borders, parts of West Africa have proved to be willing partners in flooding Europe with drugs.

I tracked the drug at one point to a South American drug trafficker who’d settled in Guinea Bissau, but I had to find out where it was going from there. My producer, Joanne, and I traveled to southern Italy, where we heard smugglers gained easy access to the European continent. When we reached the tiny town of Castel Volturno, one of the largest cocaine trafficking hubs in Europe, we felt as if we had stumbled into an African slum.

Castel Volturno is a notoriously lawless town, overwhelmed with poor immigrants and controlled by the local mafia. I’ve reported from a lot of hot spots in the world, but Castel Volturno oozes with a special eeriness. We were searching for a drug trade that was practically invisible, but all the time we could feel the watchful eye of the Camorra, the local mafia, whenever we moved. People were often afraid to talk to us about cocaine or who was running the place, but we pursued every angle we could while our unseen targets watched us.

Cop Walks Into a Bar And...Arrests You. For Having a Drink.

LATE ON A BALMY Saturday night last June, six Fort Worth cops and two officers from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission went looking for trouble. They had just raided two Hispanic bars in an industrial stretch of town and nine detainees now sat in the paddy wagon (pdf), hands bound with plastic ties. The rest of the city's bars would soon shut down. It seemed like the night was over, except for the paperwork. Then Sergeant Richard Morris had an idea. "Hey," he said. "Let's go to the Rainbow Lounge."

A half-dozen police cruisers, an unmarked sedan, and the prisoner van slid to a stop in front of the Rainbow Lounge, Fort Worth's newest gay club, at about 1:30 a.m. on June 28, 2009—40 years, almost down to the minute, after New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn with billy clubs and bullhorns. Inside the bar, the officers fanned out, grabbing and arresting six patrons for public intoxication. Benjamin Guttery, a 24-year-old Army vet, says an officer told him to put down his drink, then "bulldozed" him through the crowd to the paddy wagon but then let him go. "I'm 6'8", 250 pounds, and I had just finished my second drink," Guttery told a local reporter. "I might have had enough to have a loose tongue, but not a loose walk or anything like that." Another man alleges that he was slammed against a wall, elbowed, and fell on the ground, landing him in intensive care for a week with bleeding in his brain. He was charged with public intoxication and assault.

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and that includes absurdity in law enforcement. Most states and towns have public intoxication laws that allow peace officers to pick up the drunk and disorderly. But in the Lone Star State, the nation's broadest PI law lets cops go virtually anywhere and arrest anyone for drunkenness—even if they're quietly nursing a beer in a bar.

Arrested for drinking in a bar? Sounds like the ultimate catch-22. Since 2006, when Texas overtook California as the state with the most drunk-driving fatalities, cops and a beefed-up task force from the state Alcoholic Beverage Commission have used a 1993 law as a pretext to enter any bar and arrest its patrons on the spot. The public intoxication standard, backed by the Texas-based Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is so broad that you can be arrested on just a police officer's hunch, without being given a Breathalyzer or field sobriety test. State courts have not only upheld the practice but expanded the definition of public intoxication to cover pretty much any situation, says Robert Guest, a criminal defense attorney in Dallas. "Having no standard allows the police to arrest whoever pisses them off and call it PI," he says, adding, "If you have a violent, homophobic, or just an asshole of a cop and you give him the arbitrary power to arrest anyone for PI, you can expect violent, homophobic, and asshole-ic behavior."

For some officers, PI has provided a ready-made reason for detaining minorities. A Houston defense attorney, who asks to be unnamed since he specializes in misdemeanors such as PI, puts it this way: "If you're brown and you're around—you're going down." Nick Novello, a 27-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, blew the whistle on three colleagues who he claims filled their arrest quotas by picking up people, mostly minorities, for PI. "They were illegally arrested," Novello says. "It's an absolute perversion." (Two were removed from the force.)
