North of Tokyo the small city of Kumagaya hosts a festival dedicated to uchiwa - Japanese flat fans. Actually not really but the original festival was usurped by shops giving out free fans that it kind of took over the festival and the name.
The festival goes for several days and the highlight is on July 22nd when half-a-dozen wooden cart floats gather together and try to outdo each other in making a cacophony of noise. Five of them have historical and legendary figures atop them.North of Tokyo the small city of Kumagaya hosts a festival dedicated to uchiwa -... more

extract:
Felipe Romero: well, when I arrived in Italy I was 11, and all my life changed, in positive. A new school new friends, new climate, new aspects, new things, and all of this is in my first work titled “Phil so Good”. Italy is a place, similar to Colombia, but I was the first foreigner in the country where I lived, “Mattie”, so at the beginning it has been a little hard, a new language, a new moment to create new relationships, and for a young boy could be a dangerous change for his mind, but for me it has been a joke, something funny, thanks to the cover of my friends of my family and to my mind. Italian culture is similar, but at the same time different from Colombian. Italy influenced my music thanks to the foreign music, more American or English, and I discovered R&B, pop, dance, rock, something new for me ,because Colombian radios used to play more Caribbean music or salsa, meringue, more typical sounds Latin music....

le cool editor Mat Osman looks at your pick of London festival's this summer.
1234
Two Sex Pistols, one Beatles progeny, one Stones’, a Primal Scream-based supergroup and the only London performance of Peter Hook’s version of Unknown Pleasures – 1234 festival has gone a bit stellar this year.
It’s always been the go-to festival for the newest and oddest bands – a list of headliners that includes F*cked Up, These New Puritans, Optimo and Toddla T is always going to pull a younger, hipper crowd – but this year it’s mixed it up with some big names.
It also boasts the best after show parties – 13 this time – at venues ranging from posh clubs to grimy pubs.
24th July, Shoreditch Park, £20
http://the1234shoreditch.com
South West Four
This lot are going to seem just wrong playing in the sunshine. Clapham Common is the setting for a Who’s Who of mainstream dance music. Armin Van Buuren, Fatboy Slim, Sasha, Eric Morillo and Josh Wink all put in appearances but we’re going to be down the front row for the first London show by Salt ‘n’ Pepa for 15 years.
Clapham Common

One-day £40, weekend £75
Lovebox
More big names at Groove Armada’s Lovebox festival which pulls off the same trick as 1234; starting the festival day off with east London faves – Peaches, Hot Chip, Noisettes, Empire of the Sun – and then topping the whole thing off with something for the dads, in this case Roxy Music on the Saturday and Grace Jones on the Sunday.
July 16/17/18
One day - £45, two-day - £80, three-day £99

Serpentine Sessions
London’s prettiest festival? You shouldn’t need any excuse to visit the lake and rolling parkland around the Serpentine, but if you did, a set of bucolic outdoor gigs might help.
They’ve already begun but you still have a chance to catch Patti Smith. Ffion Regan and Dawn Kinnard on the 29th and Laura Marling and Fanfarlo in July.
The Serpentine, Hyde Park

£32-£37
Field Day
More like a collection of club nights that just happen to take place in a park than a festival proper, Field Day is the most unconventional of this year’s London festivals.
Promoters Eat Your Own Ears, Bugged Out and Adventures in the Beetroot Field bring the likes of Phoenix, Steve Mason and Andy Weatherall blinking into the sunshine. Look out for a performance from Mark E Smith’s the Fall too – the obligatory oldie that every festival has this year.
Victoria Park
£33

Portland Pirate Festival- Don't let a fair form beguile you---
(Provocative Photo - Through the Lens: 2008) Their honeyed words are but served to pinch your purse,...even as the cloying slatterns press your person !
"The 3rd Annual Portland Pirate Festival started yesterday. I've been attending the festival since its inception (I covered it for the St. Johns Sentinel newspaper the first year), and have enjoyed attending ever since.
The event is very kid friendly. There are many booths and games set up to amuse the children (of all ages) and several of the bands that perform there play music that is specifically geared to the little ones. My granddaughter has attended with me for the last couple of years, and she loves the bands and the atmosphere of the event. She always has a great time".

The line-up 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury festival - arguably the most famous summer musical event in the world - has been a contentious issue for fans for a couple of years now. The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, a reformed Smiths and even Take That have all been touted as possible headliners. The speculation has ended, at last, with the release of this year's official line-up.
U2, Muse and Stevie Wonder will play Pyramid Stage headline slots on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights while Snoop Dogg, Dizzee Rascal, the Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend and Pet Shop Boys are amongst the other bands due to perform.
The festival's founder, Michael Eavis, was said he was excited about this year's festival. "This is it! It is the most staggering lineup, to match the 40-year reputation of the festival," he said. "I have been trying to get U2 to play at the festival since 1982, and Muse have never headlined Saturday here, although they have played before."
