The Ontario Green Energy Act continues to bring heavy investments into the province, the latest of which is a $60 million deal between General Electric and B.C.-based renewable power firm, Plutonic Power.
GE Energy has been eager to dip their toes into Ontario’s escalating solar energy market and with the assistance of Plutonic, will purchase three solar farm projects in Southwestern Ontario owned by solar-panel maker First Solar.
With this move into Ontario, GE joins a growing list of energy titans like South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Germany’s Siemans AG, who have set up shop in the province as energy developers and manufacturers.

Solar Thin Films Inc and Greensol Alternative Energy of Bnei Brak, Israel, have signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the purpose of forming a joint venture (JV) and strategic relationships for development and syndication of solar power projects on both a proprietary and turnkey basis.
Solar Thin Films also said that it was in preliminary talks in the US, Canada, Europe and elsewhere to form joint ventures similar to the one being negotiated with Greensol.
The company recently announced a shift in focus from the sale of turnkey factories for thin film solar module production to concentrate on establishing, financing, managing and syndicating solar plants.
In late 2010, the company also signed a letter of intent with One Globe Renewables of Colorado to form a JV.
Greensol now focuses on the development of ground mount solar PV systems in sizes ranging from 50kW to 8MW.Solar Thin Films Inc and Greensol Alternative Energy of Bnei Brak, Israel, have signed... more

British oil explorer EnCore Oil and its consortium partners have discovered oil at the Varadero exploration well 28/9-2 in the UK Central North Sea block 28/9.
The well, which is located to the west of the Catcher field, encountered excellent quality hydrocarbon bearing reservoir sandstones at 4,020ft measured depth within the target Tay Sandstone level.
EnCore said that initial analysis indicated the discovery of a 400ft hydrocarbon bearing interval with a calculated net pay of 106ft.
The well logs indicate excellent quality sands with average porosities of about 33%, and wireline sampling and pressure testing of the hydrocarbon bearing zones suggest that the oil has an API of approximately 26 degrees.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,205ft and will now be plugged and abandoned as planned.
EnCore is the operator and holds a 15% stake in the license, while its consortium partners Premier Oil, Nautical Petroleum, Wintershall and Agora Oil & Gas hold 35%, 15%, 20% and 15% interests, respectively.British oil explorer EnCore Oil and its consortium partners have discovered oil at the... more

E-readers like the Kindle and Nook were all the rage this holiday season, but few of these paperless marvels can claim they're powered by the sun like Toshiba's newest offering.
Unveiled on Christmas Day in Japan, the "Biblio Leaf" features front-mounted solar panels that juice up the onboard battery. Additionally, the reader offers a 6-inch e-ink display, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, and 2GB of memory which can be expanded via a microSD card. Unfortunately, it might be a while until you can get your hands on it.

NAFTC Studios are planning a 50,000 sq ft film studio in Windsor, Ontario, Canada - powered by solar energy.
NAFTC (North American Free Trade Consultants) CEO Jim Shaban, announced on Thursday that the state of the art film studio will be powered by renewable energy from 500kw of solar panels thanks to securing a contract from Green Lakes Energy and with tax credits for green energy. The plans tried and failed to get backing before in 2005 due to standards. The film studio could be completed in April.

Chemists are working to understand the efficiency with which plants harvest sunlight so that they can capture more of it with artificial systems.
Theoretical models suggest ways for optimizing artificial photosynthesis to turn light into energy the way plants do...
Plants take advantage of quantum mechanics to harvest sunlight with near-perfect efficiency—though only roughly 2 percent of that capture sunlight ultimately gets stored as chemical energy. Now scientists are studying how this light-harvesting step of photosynthesis is optimized by nature to learn how to mimic it in engineered systems for use in solar cells or artificial leaves that produce fuels directly from the sun.

While one might not immediately associate “going green,” with being “gangster,” South Central Cartel has found a way to make that connection by creating the Hip Hop world’s first entirely solar powered music video. The video, “I’m On My Gangster,” is the first release off of their upcoming album South Central Gangsta Muzic. In many ways, South Central Cartel’s decision to make an ecologically conscious video makes perfect sense—they’re music has always been a product of their environment.
The history of South Central Cartel’s music reflects an era, a culture, and a sound that will never be duplicated. South Central Cartel played a significant role in the solidification of the classic West Coast sound, and blended it with significant rhymes that reflected the lives and the experiences of the people. Though times and mindsets have changed, South Central Cartel has never been a group to shy away from being mavericks in the rap game. Their legacy of setting trends, and addressing the issues of people living in the hood, is alive and expanded through their willingness to give attention to global concerns. South Central Cartel is still making history and doing their part to leave their mark on West Coast music, and the world at large, by bringing a new consciousness to it.

One thing you might notice is absent from the image and description is a brand name. That's because there's not one. What does that mean? It means that for someone who wants to shoot some casual video of the kids and not have to worry about lugging around extra batteries, this might be the perfect gadget.
If you're a serious videographer, this is probably not the gadget for you.
It is impressive to note, however, that this camera does shoot HD video in 720p. Hey, if all you're looking for is a cheap HD camera to knock around on the ski slopes, hiking trail, or other YouTube worthy occasions, I'd at least give this camera a chance. At $130, it wouldn't be a world-ender if something unfortunate were to happen to it.One thing you might notice is absent from the image and description is a brand name.... more

Last month the Sony walkman finally passed away, and at the ripe old age of 30.
If you hadn't noticed, it's 2010 and we're in the digital age (but still don't have flying cars...wait, yes we do). The Walkman finally gave up its ghost to the iPod and other digital media players, which no doubt leaves Sony wondering how they can innovate in today's digital media market.
The solar-powered Sony Eclipse concept may just be their ace in the hole. It was designed by Hoang M Nguyen and Anh Nguyen and operates both day and night...even though it draws its power from the sun.Last month the Sony walkman finally passed away, and at the ripe old age of 30.

Forgive this pre-amble of a rant, but perhaps with my financial background I find the FHFA's position on the PACE program particularly offensive. More importantly, it is backward. PACE was conceived by some brilliant minds in Berkeley as a vehicle to provide property owners - homeowners, multifamily and commercial - with the long term financing needed to install rooftop solar and other energy-efficiency retrofits.
The loan structure was intended to be exactly the same as those loans that allow homeowners to hook up to sewer, add sidewalks, etc., with a payback term up to 20 years to make the upfront cost of these systems feasible for just about any homeowner. The FHFA took the position that these loans could 'destabilize the housing market'. No, my friends, they are not joking. Who is the FHFA? The government agency that regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae. Yes, the same one that let the housing mess fester without interference. See why I am stompin' mad? http://greenlandlady.com/site/business/defying-the-fhfa-fannie-freddie/Forgive this pre-amble of a rant, but perhaps with my financial background I find the... more

I do not know if you have been following the major Developments for Enviromission, but here is a few interesting FACTS released these past few weeks regarding the world's First Solar Tower station to be built to produce 200 megawatts.
I feel this story will be as big as the "Golden Railroad Spike" in Utah over a hundred plus years ago, where the CEO and other officials will all gather round him as he digs his Golden Shovel into Arizona dirt to signal the official start of the Solar Tower.
This really is big new people, and if you don't believe its happening, read again.
Lastly, I was thinking the other day why their stock was not climbing and is still pennies,,, it took me a while but then it hit me! People do not believe Solar Towers can provide a base load. It all makes sense now, no one has the confidence that it will work...
IT WORKS!
and proof of working, is why EVM chose ARUP and this is the announcement.
Njoy,
Oly

This will be the most monumental story since the coupling of the East and West Railroad Systems.
Welp folks, this is it, here in southern california we are at the forefront of the new Solar Tower technology implementation all waiting the approval of the SCPPA, a local power authority whose sole purpose is to govern/approve/reject/monitor/etc power needs of Southern California.
For those of us who have waited patiently, and feel that Solar Towers are the viable if not Holy Grail of Solar Technology is here!
As we speak, a meeting has been scheduled for Oct 21, 2010 at the SCPPA, a power authority whose sole purpose is to commission and regulate how we southern californians receive our power.
I personally have waited over 2 years for this announcement, and approx a year since I first learned that Enviromission, the world patent owner of Solar Tower technology, except in China, has taken it's business model and planted its solar roots here in the USA, is now up for approval in less than 2 days!
AWESOME! In the words of Arnold Swartzenagger, "southern california is the natural leader with it's media presence and is able to make tremendous change occur" in so many words, however, he used this last year not long ago to advise he will back more NUCLEAR and wind power, with NO mention of Solar Tower energy. Damn politics, i swear.... I can not wait to see what Arnold our gov has to say about this, or he has some Veto power, who friggen knows, but certainly we should all care since 20% of all power consumption must come from renewable energy by 2010, according to posts i have read this past 2 years. anyfoo..
If you wish to read the media statement from Enviromission, and start spreading the word at the water cooler tomorrow, please do so... here is this link.
sorry if there is no Image due to currents clunky new interface for posts, however, if you dont, and you should by now, know what a solar tower looks like by now. Here is another link to Enviromissions webpage in .AU where you can watch the video I posted years ago.
