Robot Wars: 10 Recent Developments in Unmanned Warfare You Haven’t Heard About

When the war in Afghanistan kicked off, the U.S. military only had a handful of drones or unmanned weapons on the battlefield. Now it’s one of the military’s main concerns as they race to outdo the competition developing innovative robots that do the dirty work. Technology is always changing and here’s a look at some of the recent developments in unmanned warfare that’s making its way to a war zone.

1. Micro aerial vehicles. Measuring just 13 inches, micro air vehicles are small, but not too small, allowing them to photograph large areas and bring back the footage. The first version created by Honeywell is a bit noisier than military would like and they’re creating a second generation model that will bring back better images and even less detectable sometime next year.

2. The X-47B. This is an amazing unmanned aerial vehicle that seems to be straight from the movies. The X-47B is more along the lines of what the future of unmanned warfare will look like, with unmanned vehicles able to carry out missions because they’re equipped with weapons. This one carries up to 4,500 pounds of weapons, making it a deadly weapon that will float around and strike (hopefully) at the right time.

3. Robosoldiers. While the U.S. focuses on unmanned planes, Israel is fixated on the robosolider. They’re combining what they already know about UAVs and implementing “see-shoot” robotic soldiers that are actually trained by military officials in closed quarters. Israel’s ultimate plan is to have the Israel-Gaza border be the first border manned by these robosoldiers.

4. Flying saucers. The Department of Defense claims these smaller UAVs will be optimal during warfare in urban areas. They’re smaller than most aerial UAVs and cost less to produce. It’s battery powered and there are versions being made all over the world, but only prototypes have been tested. Will flying saucers ever make it to actual battle? Maybe, but it seems other models are outdoing the progress made with saucers.

"Stealth" GUNS ; Improvised Firearms

--Improvised firearms are most commonly encountered in poverty stricken regions with restrictive gun control laws. While popular in the United States in the 1950s, the “zip gun” has become less common due to the greater ease of obtaining firearms on the black market. In India, use of improvised country-made pistols is widespread, especially in the regions of Bihar and Purvanchal. The manufacture of these weapons has become a cottage industry and the components are often manufactured from scrap material, such as gun barrels fashioned from truck steering wheels. In areas like South Africa, improvised firearms are more common. In a study of Zululand District Municipality, South Africa, it was found that most improvised firearms were crude, 12 gauge shotguns, with a simple pull and release firing mechanism; like the .22 rimfire cartridges, shotgun shells also operate at low pressures, making them more suited for use in weak, improvised barrels. Even in the absence of ammunition, home-made powder can be used; such firearms were the subject of a crackdown in the People’s Republic of China in 2008.

Improvised firearms are not solely the province of the criminal element, however; they are also used by insurgents. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, the paliuntod, a type of improvised shotgun, was commonly used by guerillas and American soldiers who remained behind after Douglas MacAurthur’s withdrawal. Made of two pieces of pipe that fit snugly together, the paliuntod was a simple, single shot open bolt design. The shell was placed in the breech of the barrel, which was then fitted into the larger diameter receiver. The receiver was capped at the breach end, and had a fixed firing pin placed to strike the primer of the shell. When the barrel was pulled sharply to the rear, the firing pin would strike the primer and fire the gun. These improvised firearms are still in use by both criminals and rebels in the Philippines.

UFOs are in the news again this week, as ABC News and others reported on what was apparently the eighth alleged sighting of a UFO in China in less than six months. The news of an apparent uptick in Chinese sightings comes on the heels of announcements by the United States and Britain that they are releasing official papers documenting government investigations of UFO sightings, some stretching back as far as the 1940s.

Chinese claims of UFO sightings on the rise

Claims of UFO sightings are rare in China, and only a very small number of those have happened in the last few decades. But there have been eight incidents in just a few months. The unusually compact time frame of these sightings has the Internet and media abuzz, despite the Chinese government's insistence that the previous seven alleged UFO's were merely military experiments, according to The Huffington Post.

Former Air Force members claim government cover-up

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Air Force Times and others reported that several former Air Force officers met with the National Press Club to urge the U.S. government to reveal its cover-up of UFO interference with American military exercises involving nuclear missiles. Also, they allege, at times it disabled the weapons systems themselves. The men had brought declassified government documents and claimed vivid recollections of the events, both of which they asserted would validate their allegations.

Former missile launch officer Robert Salas, who worked at the Malmstrom Air Force Base, and former missile combat crew commander Bruce Fenstermacher, who worked at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, both claim that they reported the incidents to their superiors, only to be brushed aside and told to keep silent, according to the Air Force Times. Air Force officials had no comment, referring back to Project Blue Book and a 2005 document stating that there were no credible reasons to re-open government investigations into UFOs.

Project Blue Book

Project Blue Book had made headlines of its own in 2004, when it was declassified under the Freedom of Information Act and handed over to the National Archives. It is the record of the U.S. government's investigation into thousands of reported incidents of UFO sightings between 1947 to 1969, when the project was shut down due to lack of evidence of a threat to national security or the existence of extraterrestrials in general, according to the Archives. It has been in the news frequently since that time, and it was cross-referenced in an article in the Los Angeles Times this week, bringing Project Blue Book back into the limelight.

British government releases UFO inquiries

Just as the U.S. revealed its failure to find any extraterrestrial life on Earth, so too has the British government in recent months revealed its study of the subject as well. The British National Archives acquired papers from its own government's UFO inquiries in August. US Weapons Sales to Middle East Skyrocket under Obama

"U.S. to Sell F-15s to Saudis." That was the Wall Street Journal's 8/9/10 front page headline. "The Obama administration... won't equip them with... weapons... opposed by Israel." But the "$30 billion, 10 year arms package" is still "one of the biggest single deals of its kind."

Obama "has championed advanced weapons sales to Gulf states as a way to check Iranian power." The U.S. sells weapons "to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states." The 8/12/10 NY Times reported that Obama plans to sell 200 Patriot intercepter missiles, worth $900 million, to Kuwait. The White House also supplies the Lebanese army and Palestinian security forces in the West Bank, training Fatah’s police in Jordan.

Massive sales to Arab “allies” started under Bush. Between 2001 and 2008, Kuwait bought $1.7 billion worth of arms, Egypt $10.4 billion. The U.A.E. purchased $10 billion. Sales to the Saudis brought in $10.5 billion. Pakistan bought $4.5 billion. Post the 2003 invasion, Bush’s Iraq sales came to $3.5 billion. According to the Journal, Bush saw these regimes “as a bulwark against Iranian expansionism, and the Obama administration has expanded the effort."

In that 2001-08 period, Israel purchased $5.9 billion worth of American weaponry and now, at least until after November’s Congressional election, Democrat Obama and Likudnik Netanyahu are political and military pals.

The Gaza flotilla crisis bent the Turkish-Israeli partnership out of shape, but Washington and Ankara are still NATO military allies, even as Turkey continues to denounce anyone in Congress that dares to say that the Ottoman army committed genocide against Armenians during the 1st world war, or complains that today’s Turkey denies independence to millions of Kurds.

It is impossible to deeply understand any one aspect of Middle Eastern politics, Zionism and Palestine, or Iraq or Afghanistan, etc., without seeing it in its matrix, U.S. imperial involvement with the entire region.
