Women farmers will be welcoming the next rice cropping season in June by putting up a community seed bank exchange a move that will empower women farmers, promote sustainable agriculture and reduce hunger incidence in rural areas.
Members of the National Coalition of Rural Women will set aside some 16 hectares for organic rice production in the province of Nueva Ecija. This is just a tiny plot compared to the thousands of hectares devoted to rice planting in the province known as the Philippine rice granary. But this step is crucial in pushing most marginalized rural women to have a say in food production.
"It's the women who, by tradition, act as seed keepers in the farm. We just want to give back to the women this traditional role, " Daryl Leyesa, the coalition's secretary general, said in an interview with Xinhua.
Leyesa has worked and researched on rural women concerns for the last ten years. Her latest research, commissioned by the Philippine Center for Rural Development Studies, noted that while women spend 11 hours a day for both farming and household work.
"These women in agriculture spend as much as eight to eleven hours a day in productive and reproductive work-i.e. acquiring capital for farming (usually through credit), carrying out planting activities, marketing the primary crop and backyard produce, and providing for their household's daily survival needs, " according to Leyesa's study entitled "Women in Agriculture".
The study further noted that women farmers spend as much as six hours a day for domestic work. This includes preparing farm tools and food for farm laborers, fetching water, gardening, foraging, wood gathering, raising poultry and livestock, and other livelihood activities. Being seed keepers give rural women more control over production and this won't only promote gender equity but food security as well, said Leyesa.
It's the women, after all, who is responsible for putting food in the table for her family, according to Trinidad Domingo, president of the National Coalition of Rural Women.
"I'm not married but I act as the mother to all my nephews and nieces. Like most mothers, I have to make sure that there's enough food for them," she said.
Domingo is worried that the looming global food crisis will hurt rural women more as they are the ones who need to find a way, including scrimping on their own food, just so that their family can eat even during lean times.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) forecast a spike in food prices this year following a huge reduction in global rice and wheat stocks. Extreme weather condition, combined with rising population, urbanization and increased usage of grains for fuel and feed slashed grains production.
The Manila-based lender estimates a 10 percent rise in domestic food prices in developing Asia, home to 3.3 billion people, could push an additional 64 million people into extreme poverty.
"For poor families in developing Asia, who already spend more than 60 percent of their income on food, higher food prices further reduce their ability to pay for medical care and their children's education," ADB Chief Economist Changyong Rhee said in a statement.
Filipino rural women are among those who will be driven further into poverty. Leyesa recalled that in 2008, at the height of a rice crisis that sent food prices soaring, rural women didn't only scrimp on food and other expenses but also borrowed heavily to feed their family.
But women leaders like Domingo know they can do something to improve their plight.
Putting up a community seed bank is a significant step towards that direction.
Advocates of sustainable agriculture believe in the importance of seed keeping. This is about taking seed production out of the hands of giant corporations, returning to them to the hands of farmers and encouraging them to be more self-reliant and lessen their dependence on commercial seeds.
And with climate change also threatening food production, seed keeping has become more imperative. Farmers who save and breed seeds can develop specific varieties of seeds that are more suited to their specific province and climate.Women farmers will be welcoming the next rice cropping season in June by putting up a... more

MASSIVE QUAKE HITS JAPAN
Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami alerts and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital. The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath.
In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone. Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. It triggered a tsunami alert for various countries, the National Weather Service said.

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive wave filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward land.
The number of fatalities was unclear, but Japan's Kyodo news reported at least 10 killed and numerous injured.
The quake prompted at least 20 countries and numerous Pacific islands to issue tsunami warnings. It was followed by powerful aftershocks that were felt in capital of Tokyo.
At Tokyo Station, one of Japan's busiest subway stations, people grabbed each other to steady themselves. Children cried. An announcement over the station loudspeaker warned commuters to remain underground.
With bus and train lines interrupted, workers and children poured into the streets after offices and schools were closed.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan appealed for calm and said there were no reported leaks of radioactive materials from power plants.
Firefighters battled a blaze at an oil refinery in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.
"This was larger than anyone expected and went on longer than anyone expected," said Matt Alt in Tokyo.
"My wife was the calm one ... she told us to get down and put your back on something, and leave the windows and doors open in case a building shifts so you don't get trapped."
Richard Lloyd Parry said when the quake struck, he looked through a window and saw buildings shaking from side to side.
Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.
A tsunami is sweeping across the Pacific Ocean, with a wall of water heading toward at more than a dozen countries.
An earthquake of that size can generate dangerous tsunamis to coasts outside the source region, the National Weather Service said.
Humanitarian agencies were working with rescue crews to reach the people affected.
"When such an earthquake impacts a developed country like Japan, our concern also turns to countries like the Philippines and Indonesia, which might not have the same resources," said Rachel Wolff, a spokeswoman for World Vision.
In Philippines alone, the tsunami is expected to hit in the early morning and the government has ordered the evacuation of 19 provinces along the coast, which could affect hundreds of thousands of people
Authorities in at least 20 countries and numerous Pacific islands issued tsunami warnings, the National Weather Service said.
The tsunami could cause damage "along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," warned the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."
Tsunamis are a series of long ocean waves that can last five to 15 minutes and cause extensive flooding in coastal areas. A succession of waves can hit -- often the highest not being the first, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.
A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.
CNN's Kyung Lah, Faith Karimi and Kevin Voigt contributed to this report.

Here is what I think is, thus far, the most horrifying video (no, no dead or dying people) of what the tsunami looked like, taken from someone who had time to get up to higher ground and watch the town around him get destroyed.
Just picked it up from Sean Bonner, on Twitter...

A politician in the Philippines who was shot dead while taking a photograph of his family on New Year's Day captured his killer on camera just seconds before the assassin fired the fatal shots.
Reynaldo Dagsa, a 35-year-old district councilor in the metro area of Manila, was taking a photograph of his wife, daughter and mother-in-law outside of his home at the exact moment his killer stepped from behind a nearby car and took aim.
In the photograph, the man is shown standing behind Dagsa's smiling daughter, wearing a black baseball cap backward -- and a cold gaze – as he points his pistol directly at the camera.
The barrel of the pistol is illuminated by the camera's flash.
Just seconds later, Dagsa was shot in the right forearm and the chest. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
After discovering the terrifying coincidence, Dagsa's family gave the camera to police, who used the photo to find the gunman and his lookout, who was also caught in the photograph.
The two men were arrested in separate raids in Manila on Monday, according to The Associated Press.
Caloocan city police Chief Jude Santos said the suspect was a car thief who was out on bail and likely sought revenge because Dagsa had ordered his arrest last year.
Dagsa's wife and daughter told local reporters that the family was headed out into the city to join the boisterous crowds celebrating the New Year.
The shots, the family said, were masked by the popping of nearby firecrackers. They only knew something was wrong when he fell to the ground after being hit.

A Filipino politician taking pictures of his family on New Year's Day inadvertently took a snap of the gunman who would shoot him dead moments later.
Reynaldo Dagsa, a 35-year-old district councilor in the metro area of Manila, was taking a photograph of his wife, daughter and mother-in-law outside of his home at the exact moment his killer stepped from behind a nearby car and took aim.
Dagsa's family didn't hear the gunshot because revellers celebrating the new year were setting off firecrackers all around them. The only saw him fall to the ground and rushed him to hospital. He'd died of his wounds by the time doctors were able to attend to him.
A man identified as the gunman in the picture was arrested yesterday. His accomplice was arrested in a separate raid in Manila the same day.

Chinese products were known as competitive price and good quality, and “made in China” logo could be found all over the world, from Asia to Africa. If you don’t believe, check around the items around you, you won’t be disappointed I promise.
If you want to do some small business or buy something from China, especially fashion related. There is something you really should know about before start.
Casual fashion clothing: Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Shanghai. These 4 provinces are the main textile bases dominating the fashion business in China. Thousands of wholesale websites existing thanks to them, like casual dresses, skirts, t-shirts, blouses, pants, etc.
Jeans & Denim: Xintang (Guangzhou). The jeans and denim definitely could represent Xintang, it accounts for 70% of the share in the country. Production over 0.2 billion pieces every year. More important, the strategical partnership between the town and Alibaba has been signed.
Wedding dresses: Huqiu, Suzhou (Jiangsu). Every bride dreams about the perfect wedding dress. Suzhou known as “silk city”, and wedding dress is their characteristic. Most of the suppliers and companies could offer custom-made service. So it would be easier to get you a suitable and cheap wedding dress. There are also many wedding wear companies in Guangdong.
Shoes: Guangdong, Zhejiang and Shanghai. They are 3 main shoes manufacture bases in the nation. A joke was once said from CCTV, if these bases stop the production, we won’t have shoes to wear at all! A little exaggerated, but it makes sense.
Handbags: Guangzhou(largest), Yiwu(Zhejiang), Baigou (Hebei), and Tainan(Jiangsu). All kinds of bags, leather products could be found in these four main markets.
Accessories: Yiwu (Zhejiang -largest), Guangdong, and Qingdao. In the 1980s, Taiwan was the larggest accessories center in the world, but now Yiwu takes over the place, and the business grow rapidly. Their 70% products were exported.
Since you know these basic information about the Chinese markets, if you need the items in very large quantity, you can think about manufacture orders; but if you don’t need that mean, ordering some stocks from China will do. Like those Chinese online wholesale websites, Taobao, Eachnet, etc. You will need a reliable agency to do so if you can’t come to China personally.

More info here: http://www.ecobold.com/coconut-sugar-by-coconut-world/
I recently tried coconut sugar, which is the most amazing sugar you'll ever taste, and I'm not kidding. Coconut World makes this great sugar and it's very sustainable because it's made with the sap of the tree (not from the nut). It's also a very tasty alternative to standard sugar. SaraJean Cameranesi's mom is the one who started this passion, by creating a coop called Sustainable Rural Enterprises which helps rural coconut farmers increase their livelihood opportunities and income, she wanted to help them increase their market and Coconut World was born.
You can even find delicious recipes on their site, I really enjoyed the taste and can't wait to see it at every coffee shop I go to.
Sara also talks a little bit about how her business started, a beautiful story:
Coconut World was inspired by my mother, Perla Manapol, who is a tireless proponent of creating opportunities for those who are less fortunate and want to improve their livelihood. Since 1999, in her capacity as president of Sustainable Rural Enterprise, she has traveled the globe, working with private companies and government agencies to raise awareness of the myriad of byproducts and to train villagers on how to add value to their coconuts.
Highlights:
- 100% natural
- No additives
- No pesticides
- No chemicals
- Helps farmers in the Philippines
A little more information about them, from their site:
Coconut sugar is one of nature's best sweeteners. Farmers collect tree sap from the stalk of the unopened flower buds and boil it. As it cools, it crystallizes. The result is an aromatic sugar that looks and acts very much like brown sugar. Its pleasing, light caramel flavor sets it apart from cane sugars, stevia, agave syrup, and artificial sweeteners. Use it in sauces, meat rubs, and exotic dishes. It is great for baking, especially desserts. It complements fruit and, my favorite, chocolate. It dissolves easily and is perfect to sprinkle on oatmeal and to sweeten hot and cold beverages.
Coconut World's 100% All-Natural Coconut Sugar is made by an award-winning Philippine producer. No pesticides are used in the growing of coconut trees, no chemicals or additives are used during sugar production. We guarantee its purity and its award-winning quality.More info here: http://www.ecobold.com/coconut-sugar-by-coconut-world/
