Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in his campaign to promote better eating in a part of the country known as the Redneck Riviera. He might still be leading the charge if he had only left the doughnuts alone.
A 38-year-old former Army doctor who served in Iraq, Newsom returned home to Panama City a few years ago to run the Bay County Health Department and launched a one-man war on obesity by posting sardonic warnings on an electronic sign outside:
"Sweet Tea Liquid Sugar."
"Hamburger Spare Tire."
"French Fries Thunder Thighs."
He also called out KFC by name to make people think twice about fried chicken.
Then he parodied "America Runs on Dunkin'," the doughnut chain's slogan, with: "America Dies on Dunkin'."
Some power players in the Gulf Coast tourist town decided they had had their fill.
A county commissioner who owns a doughnut shop and two lawyers who own a new Dunkin' Donuts on Panama City Beach turned against him, along with some of his own employees, Newsom says. After the lawyers threatened to sue, his bosses at the Florida Health Department made him remove the anti-fried dough rants and eventually forced him to resign, he says.Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in... more

It sounds unbelievable, but it is true. you can harvest most of what you need for a simple solar cell from powdered donuts and tea. powdered donuts have nanoparticles of titanium dioxide which is a “high band gap semi conductor”. this means that it can be used to make solar cells. the tea is simply used to dye the material so it can pick up the visible spectrum. the process is a bit too involved to be something you would just toss together in the field, but it’s interesting anyway.
Also, I didn't make this myself. It sounds unbelievable, but it is true. you can harvest most of what you need for a... more

Officially the officer was caught stealing pastries:
"State police say an upstate New York college campus policeman was helping himself to free pastries at a local convenience store.
The Valero Nice N Easy offers free coffee to any police officer in uniform.
Sgt. Steve Brody of the Morrisville State College University Police stopped daily to buy a newspaper and pick up a free cup of coffee. He also routinely stuffed a pastry into his coat.
Brody is now accused of taking about $30 worth of pastries over at least 17 separate occasions.
Brody, 55, of Morrisville, was ticketed for petit larceny. Troopers say they have surveillance videos.
Brody and his defense attorney declined to comment. Brody remains an employee at Morrisville; school officials say the case is a personnel matter and refused further comment."Officially the officer was caught stealing pastries: "State police say an... more

An attendant at a Canadian restaurant who was sacked for giving a bite-sized doughnut, worth 16 cents, to an agitated toddler was given her job back on Thursday after the case received wide media attention.
Nicole Lilliman, a single mother, said she was dismissed from a London, Ontario, outlet of the Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut chain after video cameras captured the 27-year-old giving a Timbit to a toddler.
"It was just out of my heart, she (the toddler) was pointing and going 'ah, ah...' I should have gone to my purse and got the change, but it was busy," Lilliman told the Toronto Star newspaper.
Tim Hortons said on Thursday that the firing was a mistake.
"It was the unfortunate action of one manager who unfortunately made an overzealous decision, and thankfully we were able to rectify the situation," said company spokeswoman Rachel Douglas.
Douglas said the company, a Canadian icon with stores on virtually every high street across the country, told Lilliman that she could have her job back, and Lilliman had accepted.
A single Timbit sells for 16 Canadian cents (16 U.S. cents), but most shoppers buy boxes of 10, 20 or 40 of the deep-fried goodies, which come in a variety of flavors.
Douglas said Tim Hortons had received a number of complaints. "Thankfully we're able to go back to them and say we were able to fix the situation," she said.

Apparently it's because we are hungry. A study found that when subjects were presented with a picture of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a screwdriver, their brains went into overdrive over the doughnuts.
After eating up to eight of the doughnuts, neither picture generated much of a reaction.
Then when the subjects fasted for eight hours 2 distinct parts of the brain lit up.
One part of the brain that lit up is, "the limbic brain, an ancestral part of the brain present in all animals from frogs to humans," and it says "...not only am I hungry, but here is food."
The other part of the brain that lit up is the brain's spatial attention network . It locked onto the doughnuts, deciding they were more important than the screwdrivers.
So basically we want them cuz we are hungry.
