A “rubber-stamping process” – that is how the founder of WikiLeaks, whistleblower Julian Assange, described a London court's decision to extradite him to Sweden to face questions over rape allegations.
He said the ruling did not catch him by surprise, and that he is planning to appeal.
Assange posed some interesting questions: “Why is it that I am subject, a non-profit free-speech activist, to a US$360,000 bail? Why is it that I am kept under electronic house arrest when I have not even been charged in any country?”
And he is not the only one asking those questions, particularly as the British government has a history of granting asylum to some fairly controversial characters, including Russian business tycoon Boris Berezovsky.
“It shows here the hypocrisy of the British court. Berezovsky has quite clearly being involved in the mafia over the years. All sorts of very serious offences, which you may actually, quite literally, equate with terrorism, and yet he is not being extradited", says investigative journalist Tony Gosling. “And yet we see here, what appears to be anyway, a trumped-up charge of rape, which hasn't actually even come to charges in Sweden. Assange appears anyway being taken over to Sweden and there's going to be an appeal, so we will see, but there certainly does appear to show blatant political interference into the court system here in Britain and total hypocrisy from the British justice system.”
Around 40 people wanted by Russian law enforcement agencies are resident in the UK and the list of the rich and powerful wanted by Interpol is even longer.
The UK is even harboring suspected terrorists. In 2003, alleged Chechen terrorist Ahmed Zakayev was granted political asylum. The same year, asylum was granted to Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, a case that took two years and severely damaged Russia's relationship with the UK. Berezovsky later said he had been trying to overthrow the Russian government using the UK as his base.
“A basic tradition relating to asylum is that anybody can come here, provided they are allowed, provided they have got lots of money – we will let them in, because we want them in with their money,” CANA-UK Director William J. Spring stated plainly. “And therefore it is not particularly that Russian magnates and oligarchs are welcome here. Arab sheikhs who may have a dubious criminal record, as it were, of torture – yet they are allowed to swirl around London and no problem whatsoever.”
While Julian Assange looks set to be cast from the safe harbor of the UK into choppier waters, it is unlikely he will sink from view just yet.
Assange's defense team has vowed to now take his case to the highest courts in the land, in the hope of preventing his extradition. Meanwhile, convicted criminals like Boris Berezovksy and those with outstanding international arrest warrants, like Akhmed Zakayev, remain at large in the UK, under the protection of the state.

New York member of congress Christopher Lee, Republican, abruptly resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday afternoon. Chris Lee resigned after a shirtless photo of himself in connection with an ad on the "Women for Men" section of Craigslist was made public.
Lee, who represents Western New York state, resigned after the website Gawker released a damning story with photo claiming that the married Republican was allegedly seeking female companionship via Craigslist.

The revealing photos -- snapped in Punta del Este, Uruguay last Saturday -- show Sanford, 50, and Maria Belen Chapur, 43, sunbathing at the beach, and in one shot, we see Chapur appearing to lean in for a kiss.
These are the first photos of the couple looking intimate and appearing to be clearly in love.
Earlier Thursday, An Argentinian website posted a photo of the couple simply walking together, and called it "the first known photo of the two of them together." The site did not give details of where or when the photos were taken.
As RadarOnline.com has previously reported, Sanford was embroiled in scandal two years ago when he went AWOL for a several days; while his camp said he was on a hike of the Appalachian Trail, the then-married politician, a father-of-four, later admitted to visiting Chapur, his mistress -- a woman he once referred to as his "soul mate".

Sanford left office earlier this month. His divorce with wife Jenny, his wife of 20 years, was finalized in 2010.

With the increased pressure over the phone hacking scandal for NoTW and the departure of Andy Coulson, it now stated more newspapers could be caught with hacking phones.
It is stated at four people who suspect they were hacked by newspapers who are not in connection to News Group, pointing out it is believed the practice was wide spread. It is said the legal claims are in stages where they are in contact with police and phone companies to gather any evidence on a hack.
"This was almost kids' playtime. It was such a widespread practice. Although it is a crime, people were regarding it as though it was driving at 35mph in a 30mph zone, that you just sort of do it and hope you don't get caught."-Guardian
The scandal took another hit, after this weekend there is unconfirmed report Gordon Brown contacted the police to find out if he was a victim of a hack.
"Mr Brown's office would not comment on the reports, while Scotland Yard also declined to respond to the latest allegations. The Navy video scandal brought about by Captain Owen Honors has garnered quite a buzz of controversy, but the Navy hasn't revealed the fate of the carrier officer yet. At this point it is unclear whether Honors, captain of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, will keep his position.
According to the Virginian-Pilot, Honors produced and broadcasted a series of short videos during an "XO Movie Night" meant to entertain the crew that featured "anti-gay remarks, sexual jokes, subordinates parading in drag, and sailors pretending to masturbate and shower together" for the crew.
Since an edited version of the video was released by the newspaper over the weekend, U.S. Fleet Forces Command has launched an investigation into Honor's lewd videos.
