It's early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and standalone 3D-capable Blu-ray players has exceeded $55 million in the first three months of availability. Mind you, this steady growth comes despite the absence of some major players.
While that number might sound big, it's tiny in comparison to the total number of TVs sold each month in the US and, according to our friend Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD, sales are expected to remain small throughout 2010. Regarding those much maligned 3D glasses, only 10% of those surveyed by NPD cited "looking silly" as a main concern. Instead, the biggest concern was not having enough glasses on hand for everyone looking at the set. A concern driven by cost, undoubtedly, and a dearth of survey participants from New York's trendy Lower East Side. It's early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and... more

Looks like the Blu-ray Disc Association has published the final specs for the monster BDXL disc, opening the way for manufacturers to start introducing the technology in their optical drives. Not too much here that we don't already know: aimed at institutions and folks who need to archive lots and lots of... stuff, BDXL discs are available in either triple layer 100GB (re-writable or write-once) or 128GB quad layer write-once flavors. Of course, with all these layers (or layuhs in Brooklyn) the laser in the Blu-ray drive you already own won't be able to do the trick, so start saving your change for a hardware upgrade once these things become commercially available. From the grit and glamor of Chicago to the might and majesty of Memoirs of a Geisha, Academy Award winning costume designer Colleen Atwood has added depth and character to many of Hollywood’s most recent hits with her inspired costume choices.
When the iconic blue dress adorned by the title heroine in Alice in Wonderland (out this week on DVD and Blu-Ray) landed on this captivating designer’s drawing board, the opportunity to expand an age old image was too intriguing an opportunity to pass up. Rabid Nick Refer recently took part in a Q&A with the Oscar winner, talking Alice, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and

Sometimes people decide to call things FAILs, when they aren’t really that FAIL. I try to find the glimmer of goodness in everything, so this is another edition of some FAILs that I don’t think are really FAILs.
I'm not very familiar with Sailor Moon, but how could this costume be a FAIL, if I recognized that he was dressed as Sailor Moon? The costume clearly is effective, so it is a WIN.
Yeah right. How could having fun with the WHOLE family possibly be a FAIL?
This person didn't FAIL at locking their wi-fi signal, they WIN at figuring out how to name their network. Nobody can use my signal without a password, but it's still called LINKSYS, and creativity is what counts in this world.
Yeah I get it, they spelled "your" AND "for" wrong, but they spelled 1/5th of the words correctly!
The cat always asks if he can haz cheeseburger. What does he do when he finally gets it? He takes a bite, and then goes back to eating cat food. C'mon bro, that's a waste of $1.25. FAIL.
I'm not a building inspector, so I'm not concerned that those thermoses over the counter don't adhere to municipal standards. Big whoop maybe, but FAIL definitely not.
The wrath of Venom is something that Spider Man might fear, but why should we? Perhaps this is only a FAIL because this person hasn't made the switch from VHS to DVD. Consider that DVD itself is a dead format though, maybe he streams video through NetFlix. Duh.
I know what you're thinking. This is a FAIL, because the architect is invoking ideas from Ionic temple design, while implementing columns from the Corinthian period. Well first off, we aren't all Greek architectural scholars, bro. And secondly, it's not totally inconceivable that early Corinthian architecture might use Ionic structure, as that was the previously dominant style.
Check out the previous editions:

Second week of the New Year means more DVDs to spend your well-horded holiday cash on. But what do you spend it on? Well, with a little help from our friends at Rotten Tomatoes and our own choices, we've got your DVDo's and DVDon'ts covered.
Special "Hey, See This Instead of Nine" DVD: Roberto Felini's 8 1/2 is on DVD. If you bothered to google the horrid abomination that was Nine, you'd learn it was loosely inspired by Felini's film. I say "loosely" because no amount of justification can ever forgive Rob Marshall's pox upon humanity's eyeballs.
DVDo's
-Moon was one of the more engaging independent sci-films of 2009. I kinda disliked it, but go figure.
-The Brothers Bloom finally goes legit on DVD.
-The Hurt Locker is one of the best reviewed films of 2009 and beloved by the critics.
-In The Loop was Mark's favorite film of 2009, which says a lot. So you should get it.
-Cliffhanger is on Blu-Ray.
-The Last Action Hero is also on Blu-Ray.
-The Simpsons Twentieth Season proves The Simpsons will never die. Until next season.
DVDon'ts
-Halloween II is Rob Zombie's sequel to his own remake. Uncessary? Perhaps. But ZODIAC MOTHERFUCKER said it owns. So, there.
-Big Fan is like having Patton Oswalt remind you that people from Staten Island are twits.
-Downloading Nancy will bore you to death since it's BASED ON A TRUE EVENT OR SOMETHING.
-Breaking Point is just sad.

Oh wait, did I forget to tell you if the new Harry Potter Blu-Ray special editions were a DVDo or DVDon't? Because when it comes to rabid fanbases comprised of rabid fans who froth at the mouth.
So what's the deal with these two releases?
The big draw here is the Blu-Ray--and being the ultimate editions. But let's dig a bit further:
-The two releases (The Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets) are 3-disc sets that come with the traditional "deleted scenes" and "x-minutes of footage not seen in theaters!"
-Both tout "BD Live." Which is most famous for sucking and providing new ads. And providing content.
-Wizardy!
-Twilight makes this shit look like Bill Shakespeare.
But let's look at it this way, you're now five films away from joining Brett in his own re-watching of the Harry Potter franchise:
