A 15-year-old Los Angeles girl has reason to brag today. She recently set an aviation record and is looking to do many more. Kimberly Anyadike is believed to be the youngest African-American girl to pilot a plane cross-country. She spoke to Kiran Chetry on CNN’s “American Morning” Wednesday.
Kiran Chetry: I was amazed when I read about your story. You flew 7,000 miles. You flew from Compton, California all the way to Newport News, Virginia, and back again all in 13 days. What was that like taking on such a huge undertaking in the sky?
Kimberly Anyadike: It was so amazing. All the people I met, all the people I got to socialize with. I even made a couple new friends – even meeting some of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen. It was such an exhilarating experience for me.
Chetry: With you on that flight was your instructor, Levi Thornhill. He’s 87-years-old. He was one of the Tuskegee Airmen. How did you get to know him? What was your connection and why was it so important to you have to him there? And, as I understand it, 50 other Tuskegee Airmen signed your plane.
Anyadike: Well, I had a safety pilot, his name is Ronell Normal. But Mr. Thornhill sat behind me and he never complained once. But he was such a motivational person. He’s a mentor to me. I met him after I joined the program about two years ago and the plane that I flew is dedicated to him. So I thought it was a good chance to give honor directly to him.
Chetry: Well, I think it is wonderful. You fell in love with flying at the age of 12, which is pretty young. You were able to take part in this really special program. It was a Compton-based aeronautical museum. They actually offered aviation lessons through an after-school program for disadvantaged youth. How did you become a lover of flight?
Anyadike: Well, I think I’ve always been interested in flight, but when we read about Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum we thought it was such an amazing way to put the idea to practical means. So we decided to take a demo flight and ever since we were hooked.
Chetry: What did your mom say when you came home and said, “Hey, I think I’m going to fly solo across the country”?
Anyadike: She was really excited for me because I’m doing something different, something that I want to be doing. So she was extremely excited.
Chetry: As I understand it, it wasn’t just smooth sailing the whole time. You guys had some storms, right? You encountered some treacherous weather along the way. What was it like dealing with that in the air?
Anyadike: It made me kind of nervous because all of these things that I was facing were some new things. So I was just acting upon my instincts and stuff like that. And I’ve learned to stop over-controlling and to be more in control of the plane. So I thought that was a really good experience. So now I feel like I’m prepared for the worst.
Chetry: You’re also prepared, as you want to do, to break some more records. This is what you want to do now: you want to become the youngest African-American girl to fly solo four single-engine planes and two helicopters in one day. Where did you come up with that?
Anyadike: Well, of course there’s a little rivalry between my sister and I, but of course it is motivational. I want to have my license by the time I’m 17 and I thought it was a cool way to kind of live my dream, I guess.
Chetry: Your sister is older than you, right? She also set records prior to you getting involved. As you said, it is a friendly sibling rivalry. But forget all of this. Your ultimate goal is to become a cardiovascular surgeon one day as well, right?
Anyadike: Yes. It’s my dream.A 15-year-old Los Angeles girl has reason to brag today. She recently set an aviation... more

A man who has eaten 10.5 pounds of macaroni cheese in 7 minutes has smashed the world record for eating hot dogs - by wolfing down SIXTY EIGHT in 10 minutes.
Joey Chestnut logged his third consecutive win in America's Coney Island annual hot dog eating contest.
The 27-year-old defeated his archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru Kobayashi, from Japan.
And Chestnut, who led throughout the contest, took the world record, previously set at a paltry 66.
Last year's event initially ended in a tie, with Chestnut and Kobayashi both gobbling down 59 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
Chestnut, who ate his first hot dog aged two weeks, went on to win a dramatic five hot dog eat-off.
This year's Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest was broadcast live on television.
Chestnut - dubbed "Jaws" - is from California.
He is currently ranked first in the world by the International Federation of Competitive Eating.
His food eating feats include:
:: 9.8 pounds of pork rib meat in 12 minutes
:: 182 chicken wings in 30 minutes
:: Eight pints of milk in one minute
He trains by alternating between fasting and bingeing, thereby stretching his stomach.A man who has eaten 10.5 pounds of macaroni cheese in 7 minutes has smashed the world... more

U.S. Dollars Support Iranian "Dissidents"
By Ken Dilanian
The Obama administration is moving forward with plans to fund groups that support Iranian dissidents, records and interviews show, continuing a program that became controversial when it was expanded by President Bush.
---------------------
President Obama said this week the United States "is not at all interfering in Iran's affairs," rejecting charges of meddling that were renewed Thursday by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Asked how the democracy promotion initiatives square with the president's statement, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said, "Let's be clear: The United States does not fund any movement, faction or political party in Iran. We support … universal principles of human rights, freedom of speech, and rule of law."
State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said, "Respecting Iran's sovereignty does not mean our silence on issues of fundamental rights and freedoms, such as the right to peacefully protest."U.S. Dollars Support Iranian "Dissidents"

Update | 5:03 p.m. The National Iranian American Council’s blog reports that “a trusted source who attended today’s silent rally at Baharestan Square” wrote to to them with an account of today’s events more like the one we heard from a reader of The Lede this morning — and quite unlike the account of the anonymous woman who spoke with CNN:
I was there from 5:15 to 7:30. It was very tense. Being out in Baharstan was an act of defiance. No one said anything, there were only a few chants coming from outside the square. Although the police were a lot nicer, the Basij continued to be brutal. No one was allowed to stand in one place, we had to keep on moving. The moment we stood in one place, they would break us up. I saw many people get blindfolded and arrested, however it wasn’t a massacre. I heard that someone was killed, however I didn’t see it.
NIAC’s blog also notes that an Iranian newspaper close to the country’s leadership has reported that the U.S. Congress has voted to take action against Iran. NIAC notes “Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted to prohibit US Export-Import loans from helping companies involved in Iran’s petroleum industry.” According to NIAC, the Iranian newspaper Kayhan reported the news this way:
Representatives of the US congress, in support of Mir Hussein Mousavi and the hooligans, asked for sanctions on oil importations t

History of Iranian Revolutions
Modern Iran has been shaped by a series of revolutions and government upheavals during the 20th century.
Constitutional Revolution
For much of its history, Persia—the name of Iran until 1935—was ruled by monarchs, known as “shahs.” The Qajar Dynasty began its rule of Persia in 1794, but by the 20th century there was growing resistance to the weak and corrupt monarchy led by Moazaferedin Shah.
Under pressure from merchants and the clergy, the shah agreed to sign a new constitution in 1906 that restricted the power of the monarchy and formed an elected parliament, the Majlis.
Pahlavi Dynasty
Reza Khan, an Iranian soldier, led a coup d’etat against the constitutional government in 1921 and became shah in 1925 under the name Reza Shah Pahlavi. He established a strong central government that brought modern industry and infrastructure to the country.
His downfall came with the outbreak of World War II. Though Iran remained neutral, Reza Shah was sympathetic to Nazi Germany. Britain and Russia, wanting to transport weapons through the country, sent troops into Iran, forcing Reza Shah to abdicate his throne to his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Fans of Brutal Legend gathered in England over the weekend to rock out with EA, shattering the world record for the most people simultaneously performing air guitar. Such is the power of the gamer.
The record-breaking feat took place during the UK Download Festival in North West Leicestershire's Donington Park over the weekend. Kerrang FM's Christian Stevenson, 440 gamers gathered around the EA demo trailer, taking up imaginary axes in order to rock out to Motörhead's "Ace of Spades".
Said Steveneson:
‘That was one of the raddest jams I've ever been involved with. The crowd played their air guitars better than Eddie Van Halen! Then they destroyed 'em good and proper. Who cares, right? They can go to the air guitar shop and get another one. Sick to the infinity of sickness! I want a crowd like that at every gig I'm at. Awesometacular – air guitar world records rule!'
And that's just the sort of ridiculous, over-the-top enthusiasm that makes me proud to have not gotten a job straight out of broadcasting school.
A Guinness Book of World Records official was on hand to verify the record, which destroyed 2008's record of 318. Gaze upon the faces of the triumphant English youth and be awed. AWED.Fans of Brutal Legend gathered in England over the weekend to rock out with EA,... more

Poor Efel the pet chicken needed a bit of egging on for her latest effort. It took her a week of preparation and half an hour of pushing before she could unleash her creation on the world: an egg three times the size of a regular egg and one of the biggest ever recorded.
Her owner, 11-year-old Gabrielle Needler, from Reigate, Surrey, was shocked when she saw the egg in the coop. She said: 'Efel didn't lay for a week and we wondered why. Then she laid this massive egg so she was obviously saving it all up. It took her half an hour to lay this one - normally it only takes about five minutes.'
The egg weighed in at 194 grammes, or about 7oz. The family have written to Guinness to see if it is a record breaker, but have since learned that the biggest ever recorded was an egg-tastic 340grams, from an English hen in 1896.
Gabrielle's mother, Kim, said: 'I can only imagine it was a giant hen - or the poor girl must have suffered horribly. I reckon ours must at least be the biggest in the country for a century. Gabrielle is so proud she won't let anyone else hold it.'
Gabrielle plans to blow out the yolk for a giant fried egg then decorate the shell.Poor Efel the pet chicken needed a bit of egging on for her latest effort. It took... more

Annual video games trade show E3 always sees top games publishers showing off their latest and greatest wares, but one of the biggest happenings at this year's show was thanks to a classic arcade game that's older than many of the show's attendees. Steve Wiebe, an algebra teacher from the Seattle suburbs, took on the Donkey Kong world record in a day-long clash that thrilled crowds and had the Internet buzzing,..
The story of the fight to break the Donkey Kong record was the subject of a 2007 documentary movie entitled The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, which starred Wiebe and the current record holder, Billy Mitchell. Today Wiebe was playing for a prize fund of $10,001 -- all in quarters.
But luck wasn't with Wiebe...

Last Friday, Colonia set out to set a record in the Libro Guinness for the world's largest chivito, a steak sandwich that, to my knowledge, is only made in Uruguay. The stunt followed the wildly successful Asado más grande del Mundo, in April, where 1,252 cooks piled into a stadium at the Rural del Prado to cook 26,455 pounds of meat on 4,921 feet of grills. That beat the previous record, set in Mexico with 17,637 pounds of beef, a feat confirmed by an honest-to-goodness Guiness judge who flew in for the event, which was also witnessed by at least 15,000 hungry participants.
I doubt Colonia has much competition for its record. But just in case, the 22 chefs went all out, constructing a chivito that measured 14.2 feet in length and was 17 inches thick and 5 inches tall, El País correspondent Pedro Clavijo reported in Sunday's paper, marveling at the “estupenda elaboración gastronómica” ("incredible culinary creation"). It took 216 colonienses to consume that creation, with as many as 2,000 people cheering them on at the third-annual “Colonia Está en su Plato” ("Colonia is on your plate") festival. In addition to an absurd amount of beef, the sandwich contained 200 eggs, 22 pounds of ham, 11 pounds of pancetta, 22 pounds of mozzarella, 11 pounds of mayonnaise (I had thought they put that much mayo on a regular-sized chivito!), 200 lettuce leaves and 200 tomato slices.Last Friday, Colonia set out to set a record in the Libro Guinness for the... more

"Two central Pennsylvania friends spent most of March in a text-messaging record attempt, exchanging a thumbs-flying total of 217,000. For one of the two, that meant an inches-thick itemized bill for $26,000.
Nick Andes, 29, and Doug Klinger, 30, were relying on their unlimited text messaging plans to get them through the escapade, so Andes didn't expect such a big bill.
"It came in a box that cost $27.55 to send to me," he said Tuesday. He said he "panicked" and called T-Mobile, which told The Associated Press it had credited his account and was investigating the charges.
The two Lancaster-area residents have been practically nonstop texters for about a decade since they attended Berks Technical Institute together.
That led Andes to search for the largest monthly text message total he could find posted online: 182,000 sent in 2005 by Deepak Sharma in India.
Andes and Klinger were able to set up their phones to send multiple messages. During a February test run they found they could send 6,000 or 7,000 messages on some days, prompting the March messaging marathon.
"Most were either short phrases or one word, 'LOL' or 'Hello,' things like that, with tons and tons of repeats," said Andes, reached by phone.
Andes sent more than 140,000 messages, and Klinger sent more than 70,000 to end the month with a total of just over 217,000, he said.
A spokesman for Guinness World Records didn't immediately return messages asking whether it would be certified as a record.
April came as a relief to Andes' wife, Julie, who had found his phone tied up with texting when she tried to call him on lunch breaks.
"She was tired of it the first few days into it," Andes said."
