The project is being executed by both nonprofit and for-profit businesses working together to establish how to set up and grow regional food distribution hubs. This collaborative effort, sometimes called “business clusters”, has proven to be crucial for other regional food programs. Nonprofit organizations handle most of the coordination and outreach, and conventional distributors can handle the heavy-lifting of distribution. Everyone focuses on what they do best.

(PHILADELPHIA – July 7, 2010) – When Matt Cohen, the owner of UnformalWear.com, an online and locally based tuxedo t-shirt company, had the idea of using his cotton creations to support local causes, he immediately thought of using this opportunity to raise funds for finding a cure for cancer. Cohen put his creative juices to work and decided to host a happy hour to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer.
The happy hour will be held Thursday, July 22nd from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Field House in Center City, Philadelphia. The $30 at-the-door happy hour will provide supporters with a free tuxedo shirt (first 100 will receive a limited edition ALSF shirt!), open-bar, chances to win prizes, live entertainment from Matt Spitko, and a direct donation to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
To make this event a reality, UnformalWear reached out to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and they were very supportive about the idea! “We are always looking for creative ways to reach new audiences, raise money, and spread awareness about childhood cancers,” commented Erin Monteiro, Grassroots & Volunteer Programs Coordinator for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo filed a civil lawsuit against the Senate majority leader, Pedro Espada Jr., on Tuesday, accusing Mr. Espada, his family and his political aides of siphoning more than $14 million from a network of nonprofit health care clinics he founded — money used for meals, vacations and campaign expenses.
Mr. Espada used the network as a “personal piggy bank,” the suit said, to pay for expenses over the last five years like $20,000 worth of takeout sushi and $50,000 to maintain a Bronx apartment where opponents have asserted that he does not live. He was also given a severance package now worth $9 million that would leave the clinics bankrupt if paid out, the suit said.
Mr. Espada, a Bronx Democrat, was able to drain money from the organization, the Comprehensive Community Development Corporation, by stacking its board with relatives and Senate employees, the suit said.
“I have not seen anything on this scale,” Mr. Cuomo told reporters in a conference call on Tuesday. He said that the civil suit was probably only his first move against Mr. Espada, who was elevated to majority leader by Senate Democrats last summer after agreeing to end a monthlong coup that had paralyzed state government.
“I think criminal charges are a very real possibility,” Mr. Cuomo said. “Stay tuned.”

Meet Jock Brandis, Founder of The Full Belly Project, Inventor of the Universal Nut Sheller and The Rocking Water Pump. Jock is a 2008 Purpose Prize Winner, Author of the book “The Ship’s Cat”, featured as a CNN Hero, written about in “The Wall Street Journal”, “The New York Times”, “The Atlantic”, and “Popular Mechanics” Magazines. Jock is a movie industry gaffer, a former Canadian Naval Officer, a McMaster University alumni, and a visiting speaker at the MIT D-Lab, Edgerton Center.
Jock has also worked with Oxfam and has traveled the world helping individuals and communities. He has seen, first hand, the physical and economic results of hunger and poverty worldwide. Two of his inventions are changing lives worldwide. The Universal Nut Sheller, just 1 machine can serve a village of 5,600 People or 731 Homes! The Rocking Water Pump, which is in Guyana, South America right now, they are using it to irrigate peanut crops.
The Full Belly Project
Designs and distributes agricultural devices that generate income for people in over 17 developing countries, including Ghana, Guyana, Haiti, Mali, Malawi, and the Philippines.
Two of the Featured Inventions at the 8th Annual Feast Against Famine Fundraiser:
(1) The Universal Nut Sheller (UNS):
A hand-powered device made of concrete and simple metal parts, Jock designed the machine so anyone, anywhere, can make it. The UNS shells peanuts, plus it shells other crops: coffee beans, jatropha, neem, shea, and walnuts. The Full Belly Project produces the UNS machine mold kit, at a cost of about $700 dollars per kit, based on the price of materials at the time of production. Each kit includes 1 set of fiberglass molds and necessary metal parts for 3 machines. Reproduction in a developing country can range from $28-70 dollars per machine, based on the price of metals and concrete in their community. Kits are shipped in 2 boxes, each weighing less than 50 lbs and can easily travel on flights overseas as luggage. There is also a pedal powered version that is available, this requires some additional parts to be sent overseas. An unlimited number of the machines can be made from just 1 set of fiberglass molds! We encourage reproduction of these machines to give these communities unlimited potential for self-sustainability and the chance of financial freedom for the future. Former President Jimmy Carter Autographed one of our Shellers to show his support of our project.
(2) Rocking Water Pump:
Delivers water at a rate of 5 gallons per minute from Aquifers or Surface. Can also pump Muddy, Rocky, and Sandy water sources. Made of Concrete, Rubber, and Hose this cost only $70 to make in most countries!

(Marquette, Michigan) - A student environment group from Northern Michigan University honored “Make A Difference Day” by picking up hundreds of pounds of litter and garbage at a favorite youth party spot around the Upper Dead River Falls in Marquette, Michigan.
The rubbish collected by the Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper (NMU EK) Student Team on Saturday (October 24, 2009) included rusty box springs, a smashed vehicle windshield and a plethora of beer bottles and cans. Some of the beverage containers were very old because they had the old pull-top design.
The Upper Dead River Falls is a rugged area with sandy hills, steep trails, rocky cliffs, a lengthy series of waterfalls and the obvious remnants of many campfires.
“I just found a used diaper, a lot of glass, broken bottles, cans and cigarette wrappers,” said Ben Scheelk, 21, of Charlevoix, MI, director of the NMU EK Student Team.
“What really disappoints me is all the big things we are finding like bed springs and other rusty old metal things,” Scheelk said.
While looking at the rushing water, NMU EK Student Team Event Coordinator Amanda Emerson said "water is an important entity of the world and even though we have so much of it around here we have to cherish it that much more."
"We been out here so many times there is no one out here ever picking it up their trash,” said Emerson, 21, of Cary, Ill. (NW Chicago).
NMU Senior Chelsey Cebulsky said she was proud to participate in “Make A Difference Day” and “picking up this trash is a good thing to do for the environment.”
“I have been out here many times for the party scene but I was always the one carrying around a plastic bag telling everyone to put their cans in it - sadly not very many people listened,” said Chelsey Cebulsky, 22, a physical geography major from of Adrian, MI. "Get a trash bag and get rid of trash yourself."
NMU junior Ben Youren used gloves to carefully separated hundreds of pieces of shattered glass from the muddy soil on a hillside along the river.
“It looks like it is part of a windshield,” said Youren, 26, an English major. “I am trying to dig the glass out of here.”
The NMU environment group is the student wing of the interfaith Upper Peninsula EarthKeeper Team that holds annual Earth Day environment projects across northern Michigan including planting over 12,000 trees this past spring.
Prior to the collection, the group sat in a circle at the NMU University Center and got a lesson in the importance of clean water from the co-founder of the Upper Peninsula EarthKeeper Initiative.
“Almost 80 percent of the world is water and our bodies are 80 percent water, said Rev. Jon Magnuson, co-founder of the EarthKeeper Initiative and campus pastor for NMU Lutheran Campus Ministry. “There is a delicate balance when it comes to pH or the amount of acid in water and if that balance gets thrown off we can die.”
Magnuson said people who grow up in northern Michigan sometimes “take it for granted because we have so much water.”
“If you go to other places in the world you will see people who have to travel miles to get fresh water,” Magnuson said. “Their whole life is centered around accessing good water.”
The students clean up project may of had a preventative effect.
While the students were cleaning up the area, a pickup truck pulled up with a load of tires in the back. After talking briefly to the students, the two men in the truck pulled away.
“It looks like we prevented them from dumping a whole load of tires along side of the river,” Scheelk said.
Background on EarthKeeper Initiative:
The EarthKeepers are an interfaith environment group involving over 150 northern Michigan churches/temples.
The EarthKeepers are co-sponsored by the nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute, the nonprofit Superior Watershed Partnership, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and 10 faith communities: Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, Quakers, Zen Buddhist.(Marquette, Michigan) - A student environment group from Northern Michigan University... more
