SOS Outreach, a youth non-profit organization in Colorado, will give about 500 kids a chance to ride at six resorts in Colorado this weekend, including Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. The program is designed to introduce kids to snow sports who may never have had a chance to get involved:
More Than 500 Kids Will Hit the Mountains This Weekend
December 10, 2009 (DENVER, CO) — The nation’s largest youth winter sports nonprofit entered its 16th season of service in Colorado. This weekend, more than 500 students in Colorado will hit the slopes at half a dozen ski resorts courtesy of SOS Outreach.
The students will pick up tips from professional instructors to enhance their on-hill experience, but SOS Outreach founder and executive director Arn Menconi said participants will become involved in much more.
“Our aim is to give an experience of a lifetime to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity,” he said. “At the same time, we use the ‘cool’ factor of snowboarding and skiing as a hook for a multi-year core value curriculum that inspires the students to become more involved in the community by giving back.”
SOS Outreach Global Program Director Jon Garrou said public service was a primary emphasis of the organization for not only the staff and student participants, but the broader community.
“Something happens when people see kids doing something to improve their community, and they want to support that,” he said, adding that last year about 750 adults pitched in with on-hill programs as well as service projects initiated by multi-year students. “Snowboarding may have been what brought everyone together, but it’s become something much larger and more meaningful.”
In all, SOS Outreach partners with 39 mountain resorts across nine states, Canada and New Zealand. Menconi said without the steady support of Vail Resorts, the organization would not have been able to expand.
Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz said the company was more than happy to partner with SOS Outreach.
“Working with SOS Outreach, we are able to give the experience of a lifetime to kids who may not have the opportunity,” Katz said. “SOS has taken the time to understand the best way to reach kids, and with the excitement of their first chair lift ride or their first turn, each of the SOS kids is an inspiration to every one of our employees who work with them. We hope the experience makes as big a positive impact on their lives as it has on ours.”
This year, 3,000 youth will enroll in winter sports programs with SOS Outreach, half of whom live in the Denver area. SOS Outreach will serve another 1,200 students in outdoor sports programs during the summer months, for a total of 20,000 participant days across its programs.

A moral argument can be made that for any large organization to maintain wealth and power, competitive barriers must be erected to prevent young start-ups from moving in too quickly and eroding the margins. Some barriers such as price fixing or dumping goods below cost have been ruled illegal, but others have been encouraged due to their social benefits, and include trade secrets, copyrights, patents, and proprietary software and business processes. No such moral argument can apply to non-profits. A non-profit is supposed to be driven solely by its mission.

A modern day "Forrest Gump" is running from one coast of America to the other in order to raise money and awareness for homeless teens.
The goal is to raise $100,000,000. A very lofty goal that was insipred by Sir Richard Branson .
The large goal is nearly dwarfed by the fact that unlike Tom Hanks character Forrest Gump, Tellman Knudson is running across the country BAREFOOT.
3000 plus miles on America's rocky asphalt roads with no shoes is a crazy feat to undertake but not for this self-made Internet Millionaire.

The search for meaning is one of life’s continuing journeys. The suspicion that meaning is lacking can bring on a deep dread that can haunt us all. The dreary landscape of the suspicion of no meaning can lead us to make up meaning. Buddhists call this ornamentation – the creation of bright and pretty things to enliven the world as think we find it. But the world we think we find is often a world we dream while asleep. The search for meaning is one of life’s continuing journeys. The suspicion that... more

I sometimes work with companies that are on the verge of leaving the ‘cottage stage’ and pushing into the great uncertainty of corporate adolescence. This push, and the stress which often accompanies it, is one of the seminal periods in the development of any company. By the time I arrive on the scene, battle lines often have been well formed and the organization has divided into two camps. The coming battle will present severe challenges for the founders, team and the company. The prevailing camp will get to decide what the future will hold for all involved
Let me start by defining what I mean by ‘cottage stage’. First off, defining a company in terms of its gross revenue is not useful. I’ve seen organizations generating close to twenty million dollars in gross revenue while still operating within this paradigm. Secondly, the size of the organization in terms of its client base or human resources is also not a good indicator. I have encountered companies with twenty to thirty major clients and over a hundred employees that are still operating as a cottage business. Finally, the age of a company is an unreliable indicator as well. Once a company slips into what I call ‘life-style mode’ it enters a period of repressed adolescence that can last through its entire life span.I sometimes work with companies that are on the verge of leaving the ‘cottage... more

The most the important difference is that early stage investors have to deal with a class of uncertainties that are much the better quantified in the later stages of a company’s growth. Their attitude towards risk aversion and the focus of their diligence can be quite different. Additionally, because there are no significant ‘corporate tracks in the snow’, these investors very often have to make ‘leaps of faith’ based on their gut feel. The most the important difference is that early stage investors have to deal with a... more

During my six tours as CEO I have encountered the same challenges over and over. My frustration grew until there was no way out but to find an alternative approach that really worked. Finding a way to make business development work became a crusade. I got very lucky. My fourth company showed me the way. Within six months I had the beginnings of a solution. Those first insights formed the core of an innovative, potent and cost-effective approach to business development. I describe how and why that occurred in Amazing Pace.During my six tours as CEO I have encountered the same challenges over and over. My... more

Gum For My Boat is a story of Hope focusing on the Bangladesh Surf Club and its members. The club consists of more than 30 boys and girls and is helping to introduce surfing into a culture in a very unconventional method. Many of the children are street kids or come from very poor families. Some don't even know how to swim, but their love for surfing brings them together and into a way of life they never even knew existed. An ocean that was once deemed off limits due to fear and a very conservative Islamic culture is now becoming source of fun, escape and even a chance for a way to make a living. Follow professional surfer, Kahana Kalama (a past guest star of Fuel TV’s series On Surfari) as he works with Hawaiian-based non-profit, Surfing The Nations, and learns from these kids that sometimes, surfing involves much more than catching waves.

On September 7, 2009, charity water turned three.
To kick off the September campaign each year, and in the spirit of connecting you to the people you've served, we spend each anniversary in the field. Today, we celebrated in the town of Cabastor, Haiti, where more than 3,000 people got clean drinking water for the first time, thanks to your donations and our local implementing partner, Partners in Health.
The people of Cabastor are virtually cut off from society. A giant lake separates them from roads, and access to clean water and healthcare. To them, drinking water used to mean a murky river nearby or long walks high in the mountain to unprotected springs. Not anymore. In three months, the community dug trenches for 285 pipes, helped get 500 bags of cement across a lake by canoe and up treacherous footpaths to make the project successful. Our local partner, Partners in Health, found and protected a freshwater spring high in the mountains, and used gravity to bring clean water to 6 distribution points (tap stands) in the valley.Clean water now flows freely here.
In just three years, you've helped us make a dent in the water crisis, bringing clean and safe drinking water to over 700,000 people in 16 countries. This September, we want to make that 1 million people. To learn how you can help, visit mycharitywater.org
