As they made their way to Zuccotti Park, the feeling was tense. People who watched from their offices did not smile or laugh, they stared and whispered quietly to each other.
And then the veterans took the human microphone. Like their steps, their voices rang in perfect time. The occupiers stood in silence, only opening their mouths to repeat what the soldiers said.
When one Navy veteran addressed Zuccotti Park he put it very simply: "If you continue to assemble in peace and solidarity, justice will come to pass. We are the 99%."

I know its in a segment but HERE in text for the hearing impaired who are part of our 99% Community too!
Host Keith Olbermann asked Navy vet and friend of Scott Olsen, Josh Shepherd how Olsen was doing. Shepherd answered by reading the most recent text that he got from Olsen, “So he says what kind of pie, which goes along occupy. I see the success there. Keep it up. Non-violent in the face of police brutality.”
Later, Olbermann asked Shepherd how he feels about right wing critics who doubt the legitimacy of the veterans at the Occupy protests. Shepherd said, “Well, you know, they’re free to say that. It’s insulting a little bit, but I think it’s very easy to say. You know, I hate to generalize, but I’m sure a lot of people who are disputing this stuff have not served, and you know like now our numbers are getting stronger and stronger as veterans lending our voices to the movement. It’s harder and harder to deny.”

Always trust Amy.
her police brutality in 2008 opened my eyes my eyes that MSM is state owned/controlled. I mean the corporations own then thus it's state owned. So the fact NBC on Wednesday night never mentioned the marine being critically injured hardly surprised me. I expected that. Having been thru the events of St Paul. No I wasn't there, but I have friends, close friend who was like a block away from the Minority Report Pre Offense arrests (lives) and also a cousin who lives in Minneapolis/St Paul and works in Owatonna (and was on the other side of the highway bridge when the the bad bridge collapsed at the time and I guess became instant friends even though I've know her since she was born. We weren't that close till that happened. ie I returned the favor by going to her wedding to someone who's hispanic which shouldn't matter but her uncle my dad refused to go. Jesús is one of the nicest and except when he does speak in spanish, you would never know when he's speaking in English. Totally anti stereotype. I was told I was going to be embarassed because no white person was going to show up, was going to go to a bad church thats falling apart. Neither of which is true and even if hardly a white person showed up I really didn't give a shit. My cousin is family and any family member should support cousins choice in whatever they do. Heck even Dick Cheney (ewe) has his Lesbian daughter. Yeah I get off subject about this. but I'm almost always concerned with my cousins. It happened several years earlier with one on moms side. who was almost murdered by a prick. It really turns out they just never should have been together. He's a nice guy now. she's a bit off kilter. Almost got her other cousin in a situation where she might have been date raped. So right now I'd be astranged from her for now. But they are way over in CO and I'm in Iowa. First the good cousin was one of the few good female tattoo artists in the Denver area now I hear shes learning to care for animals. glad to hear that. But everyones got their ups and downs. wish the marine lots of luck in regaining his momentum.

A former Marine and Iraq war veteran who was injured during the raucous Occupy Oakland protest on Tuesday night has been upgraded this morning to fair condition at Highland Hospital in Oakland, a nursing supervisor said.
Scott Olsen, 24, of Daly City, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, was among the hundreds of protesters who filled the streets of downtown Oakland to protest the police dismantling of the encampment at Frank Ogawa Plaza outside City Hall.
Keith Shannon, Olsen's roommate who served in Iraq with him, said doctors told him Wednesday night that Olsen was unconscious and breathing with the help of a respirator.
The antiwar group said Olsen, a systems administrator at a San Francisco software firm, suffered a skull fracture when he was hit by a "blunt object."
Video footage shows a protester, identified by the antiwar group as Olsen, being knocked to the ground at 14th Street and Broadway after police lobbed an object - possibly a tear gas canister - at a group of protesters. The object emits a loud "bang" after landing on the ground.
While he lay dazed wounded on the street, other protesters came to his aid. The footage then appears to show an officer tossing another canister toward the group helping him. There was another blast heard, and one protester can be heard screaming "What the f- " at police while a demonstrator angrily bangs his sign on the street again and again.
The group drags Olsen away. He appeared to be conscious after the incident and pressed his hand to his head while looking at his cell phone.
Olsenhad spent most nights over the last few weeks at the Occupy SF camp, Shannon said.
"He'd leave work, head there, sleep there and go to work the next day," Shannon said. "We were really against the fact that the banks and corporations were not held accountable for what they did."
When Olsen heard that protesters at Occupy Oakland were asking for support, he took BART to Oakland and joined in the protest, Shannon said.
Olsen knew he might have been arrested but didn't seem to have any idea the demonstration would get as violent as it did, Shannon said.

Hoorah! Epic win from decorated Marine Sgt. Shamar Thomas
THE WORLD IS WATCHING.... EVEN OUR TROOPS.
BACKGROUND:
United States Marine Corps. Sgt. Shamar Thomas from Roosevelt, NY went toe to toe with the New York Police Department. An activist in the Occupy Wall Street movement, Thomas voiced his opinions of the NYPD police brutality that had and has been plaguing the #OWS movement.
Thomas is a 24-year-old Marine Veteran (2 tours in Iraq), he currently plays amateur football and is in college.
Thomas comes from a long line of people who sacrifice for their country: Mother, Army Veteran (Iraq), Step father, Army, active duty (Afghanistan), Grand father, Air Force veteran (Vietnam), Great Grand Father Navy veteran (World War II).Hoorah! Epic win from decorated Marine Sgt. Shamar Thomas

Here's a veteran, identified as U.S. Marine Sergeant Shamar Thomas, confronting New York Police Department officers during Saturday night's protests to ask them why they've been arresting Occupy Wall Streeters instead of defending the right to protest. "How do you sleep at night?" he asks them. "There is no honor in this."
The video of Thomas appears on the Facebook page of Occupy Marines, who say they'll "support demonstrators with organization, direction, supply and logistics, and leadership." Wonder how right-wing pundits will shoehorn protesting military vets into their "all OWS protesters are communist hippies" mantra.

"Bob Day is losing sleep over efforts to keep local veterans out of paupers' graves.
Day, the head of a volunteer group that arranges military burials for ex-troops whose remains are unclaimed, didn't realize there'd be so much demand when he launched the program last year.
...
Once the latest mass funeral is over, Day is bracing for a mountain of detective work.
He's amassed a list of more than 1,500 local paupers'-grave candidates from funeral homes and the public fiduciary. Next he must comb through it one name at a time to figure out how many might qualify for military rites.
The process is laborious, he said. Names and other information are submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs and followed through the system.
Day said he's trying to find a few volunteers with computer and database experience who are willing to assist in those efforts." *

As I read this article, in the Tucson morning paper, the music box that is some part of my brain was playing the opening lines of a song from Hair:
"Folding the flag
is taking care of the nation.
Folding the flag
is putting it to bed for the night.
I fell through a hole in the flag.
I'm falling through a hole in the flag.
helllllllppppppp"
Unclaimed dead, there are too many. And too many of those were veterans, who may have fallen through a hole in the flag.
Maybe some just preferred to live alone and actually wanted to die alone. See enough of the worst men can do might turn many of us to that hermit's existence. Maybe some were just too obnoxious for kith and kin to keep dealing with. We all probably know someone like that, It happens. Were some of them ill and untreated? Most likely, and that speaks volumes of ill about our culture and fiscal priorities. We love the pretty; we seek the fanciful and jolly; few of us have a will to brave a look into the dark and unseemly realities behind pleasant vistas.
Too many of my classmates did not live to a ripe old age. My mother could have said the same, as could her mother before her. The culling thunder that is war takes so many saplings. What forest might we have had without such ravages? Yes, some wars needed to be fought. But of the three generations of us, my mom, her mom, and myself, only one of us knew the fight was worth the cost. And my daughter will notice a lot of missing members of her generation, again, for no worthy reason. One out of four generations sent off to war that was actually necessary. So many little wars of contrivance that subsections of generations have been thinned for no noble cause. So many empty seats at family suppers.
We bury our dead, or see them properly interned, with some solemn notice at least. Surely, we are that decent a people?
Well, some are, at least. Please note that and give it some thought. Are we a nation of lip service then blissful amnesia, or are we human beings, who stop, just a moment, and take note of a passing of a fellow human being? Do some of us roll up sleeves and help do right by our veterans? The blowing of taps is more than notes of music. It is supposed to signal that all is well, and that the dead have been given due tending.
Work for peace and justice, that those who served did not do so in vain. But maybe, bow a head and send a kind thought or prayer. Maybe even help make sure the dead have been tended in a respectful manner.
At least consider saying: Thank you for your service. We will try to be worthy of your sacrifices."Bob Day is losing sleep over efforts to keep local veterans out of paupers'... more

It’s time to do more for veterans seeking employment. We have an obligation to make sure our veterans are able to navigate this difficult labor market and succeed in the civilian workforce. That’s why the President today announced a comprehensive plan to ensure that veterans have the employment support and assistance they deserve. Building on the First Lady and Dr. Jill Biden’s work through Joining Forces, and on the President’s Veterans Employment Council, the proposals outlined by the President today use every available avenue to make sure that veterans have the skills employers want and that employers understand the value of hiring a veteran.
