The U.S. terror war as seen through the eyes of a prisoner
When we first began corresponding with Khalid Awan in 2007, we had no idea why he was serving time in U.S. federal prison. We soon discovered Awan was one of the first of thousands of Muslims taken prisoner in the post-9/11 U.S. “terror war.” As the story began unfolding in our letters, we began to realize that this honest, humble and sincere man was not only innocent, but the ongoing injustice being done to him provides critical insight into the mindless, meanspirited, bureaucratic-yes-men idiocy fueling the illegal U.S. “war on terror” (and just about everything else that is going wrong in this country). At our insistence, Awan wrote his story and supplied us with whatever documents we requested. And now, after three months of cooperative efforts, the story of Khalid Awan can be told. We have come to know Awan as a peaceful man engaged in peaceful work who has been wrongfully accused, detained and repeatedly convicted of crimes he did not commit because he was a Muslim with international connections and an office in New York on 9/11. We present this to you in faith that you will realize a deeper understanding of the levels of complicity necessary for the “land of the free” to tolerate the phony war on terror year after year and in hope that Awan—and all the other million or more political prisoners being held by this country—will one day be reunited with their families.

Al-Qaida marked the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington with a video message tonight in which it predicted that Barack Obama would be brought down by the Muslims.
In a two-part, 106-minute tape recorded in Arabic and released on militant websites, Osama bin Laden's righthand man, Ayman al-Zawahri, likened the US president to his predecessor.
"America has come in a new, hypocritical face. Smiling at us, but stabbing us with the same dagger that Bush used," said Zawahri. "God willing, your end will be at the hands of the Muslim nation, so that the world and history will be free of your crimes and lies."Al-Qaida marked the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and... more

What if everything we have seen or heard of Osama Bin Laden on video and audio tapes since the early days after 9/11 is a fake - and that he is being kept 'alive' by the Western allies to stir up support for the war on terror?
Incredibly, this is the breathtaking theory that is gaining credence among political commentators, respected academics and even terror experts.
Of course, there have been any number of conspiracy theories concerning 9/11, and it could be this is just another one.
But the weight of opinion now swinging behind the possibility that Bin Laden is dead - and the accumulating evidence that supports it - makes the notion, at the very least, worthy of examination.
The theory first received an airing in the American Spectator magazine earlier this year when former U.S. foreign intelligence officer and senior editor Angelo M. Codevilla, a professor of international relations at Boston University, stated bluntly: 'All the evidence suggests Elvis Presley is more alive today than Osama Bin Laden.'What if everything we have seen or heard of Osama Bin Laden on video and audio tapes... more

"ArmorGroup North America, the contracting firm at the center of a recent scandal over inappropriate behavior by security guards at the U.S. embassy in Kabul, is facing new charges that it lied about its capabilities in order to get the State Department contract.
And as the stories and photographs of lewd behavior by embassy guards continue to mount, two former employees of the company are claiming that the State Department and high-ranking company officials have known about allegations of sexual deviance, inadequate training and poor contract management since 2007.
The latest charges were contained in a whistleblower retaliation lawsuit filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia by James Gordon, the company’s former director of operations, against ArmorGroup North America and ArmorGroup International. Another former employee elaborated on the allegations at a news conference.
The charges come on top of a report and pictures released last week by a Washington watchdog group, the Project on Government Oversight, that portrayed some embassy guards as wild partiers and misfits who drank vodka from the cracks of colleagues’ buttocks and performed other unsavory acts.
Gordon, who left the company in February 2008 after bring stripped of his duties, claims in the lawsuit that ArmorGroup employees in Kabul and their managers hired prostitutes, with one trainee bragging that he “could buy girl for $20,000 and turn a profit in a month,” according to his complaint.
Neither ArmorGroup nor the State Department investigated those claims, Gordan’s lawsuit says. Instead, it alleges, ArmorGroup officials were enraged by Gordon’s reports and stripped him of his duties; in February 2008, he resigned from the company.
ArmorGroup’s parent company, Wackenhut Services, said in a statement there is no merit to Gordon’s allegations of whistleblowing or retaliation."

Turns out that although Osama frowns on music, he's a huge Whitney fan and had planned to kill her husband.
In her autobiography Diary of a Lost Girl, Boof documents her experience being held captive in a Moroccan hotel and forced to be Laden's sex slave for four months 10 years ago.
She writes:
"He told me Whitney Houston was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen."
"Osama kept coming back to Whitney Houston. He asked if I knew her personally when I lived in America. I told him I didn't. He said that he had a paramount desire for Whitney Houston, and although he claimed music was evil he spoke of someday spending vast amounts of money to go to America and try to arrange a meeting with the superstar. It didn't seem impossible to me. He said he wanted to give Whitney Houston a mansion that he owned in a suburb of Khartoum."
"He explained to me that to possess Whitney he would be willing to break his colour rule and make her one of his wives. Whitney Houston's name was the one that would be mention constantly. How beautiful she was, what a nice smile she has, how truly Islamic she is but is just brainwashed by American culture and by her husband Bobby Brown, whom Osama talked about having killed, as if it were normal to have women's husbands killed."
"In his briefcase I would come across photographs of the Star magazine, as well as copies of Playboy."Turns out that although Osama frowns on music, he's a huge Whitney fan and had planned... more

As the Obama administration seeks to come up with a proposal for trying Guantanamo detainees, one of the most important cases to challenge presidential authority may provide some lessons. There are still 240 detainees left on Guantanamo and progress to close the prison has been stymied by congress and other legal concerns. One of the most important trials of a Guantanamo detainee was that of Salim Hamdan. The ruling in his case essentially established that the executive cannot come up with a new trial system without congressional approval and that the executive cannot ignore the Geneva conventions. Jonathan Mahler, author of The Challenge: Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and the Fight over Presidential Power, discusses his book and the case that challenged the use of secret military courts. As the Obama administration seeks to come up with a proposal for trying Guantanamo... more

One of Osama bin Laden's sons may have been killed by a US missile strike in Pakistan earlier this year, National Public Radio reported.
Saad bin Laden, the Al-Qaeda leader's third-oldest son, is "believed" to have been killed by Hellfire missiles fired from a US Predator drone "sometime this year," the US broadcaster said on its website.
The United States has put Pakistan at the heart of the fight against Al-Qaeda. The US military and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are the only forces that deploy drones to the region.
US spy agencies are "80 to 85 percent" sure that Saad bin Laden is dead, a senior counterterrorism official told NPR, while acknowledging that it was difficult to be completely sure without a body on which DNA tests could be conducted. One of Osama bin Laden's sons may have been killed by a US missile strike in Pakistan... more

Osama in America: The Final Answer
The question of whether Osama bin Laden has ever visited the United States, a subject on which I have expended an unhealthy amount of energy in the course of various journalistic and biographical research, has now seemingly been settled. Osama was here for two weeks in 1979, it seems, and he visited Indiana and Los Angeles, among other places. He had a favorable encounter with an American medical doctor; he also reportedly met in Los Angeles with his spiritual mentor of the time, the Palestinian radical Abdullah Azzam. All this is according to a forthcoming book by Osama’s first wife, Najwa Bin Laden, and his son Omar Bin Laden, to be published in the autumn by St. Martin’s Press.
First, some context for the book’s disclosures:
In the autumn of 2005, while conducting research in Saudi Arabia for the book that became “The Bin Ladens: An Arabian Family in the American Century,” I met a Saudi journalist named Khaled Batarfi, who had been a neighbor and friend of Osama Bin Laden in their teenage years. During one of our interviews, Batarfi offered an account of Osama’s early travels—to London, to Africa on Safari, and to the United States—that was suggestive of a young man who had more direct experience of the West than was generally understood. Batarfi’s account of Osama’s American trip was particularly striking. In December of that year, I wrote a story for this magazine about the private high school Osama had attended in Jedda, and how he was first introduced to the tenets of radical Islamic politics. In that story, I also reported Batarfi’s on-the-record but unconfirmed account of Osama’s visit to America; Batarfi believed the travel had occurred not long before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, in 1979. U.S. customs and immigration records from the relevant period had been routinely destroyed—and so the question of whether Osama had personal experience of America, and what that experience might have been, remained elusive. (Bin Laden has never referred to any trip to this country in his writings or statements.) While I found Batarfi to be credible, a single-source account, based on hearsay, could hardly be regarded as satisfactory.Osama in America: The Final Answer
