This video of Republican Maureen Walsh is a bit of a tearjerker and sums up a good week, no make that a brilliant week, for gay rights in the US. Walsh was one of only two Republicans in the House of Representative to vote in favour of the bill allowing gay couples to marry in Washington The bill passed 55-43 and will be signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire on Monday. Read more here.
A good week for gay rights
On Tuesday the federal 9th US circuit court of appeals found that California’s “Propostion 8”, its controversial gay marriage ban approved narrowly by referendum in 2008 is unconstitutional. On Wednesday Washington State won final legislative approval of a measure that will make it the seventh state to recognise same-sex marriage. Then on Thursday there was the Ellen DeGeneres and JCPenny vs. the angry bigoted 'One Million Moms' row. JCPenny, which is Michelle Obama's clothing line of choice (when she wants to go budget), stuck to their guns and decided to ignore the conservative cyber bullies by standing by keeping the gay talk-show host as their celebrity spokes person. The 'mom's' wanted JCPenny to fire Ellen and said: "By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."Well Ellen and JCPenny got the last laughs on this one. Watch this.

Ninth circuit court of appeals rules Proposition 8 unconstitutional and says it 'lessens human dignity of gay and lesbian people'
Gay marriage campaigners were celebrating a major victory on Tuesday after a federal appeals court ruled California's same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional. The long-awaited ruling paves the way for a US supreme court decision on the voter-approved measure known as Proposition 8.
In a two-to-one decision, a three-judge panel of the ninth US circuit court of appeals in San Francisco agreed with a lower court judge who in 2010 declared the ban to be a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian people.
"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California," judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote in Tuesday's ruling.
"Although the constitution permits communities to enact most laws they believe to be desirable, it requires that there be at least a legitimate reason for the passage of a law that treats different classes of people differently," the ruling states.
"There was no such reason that Proposition 8 could have been enacted."
The ruling is limited to California, which allowed gay marriage but then passed Proposition 8 in 2008.

Ron Paul is losing the GOP presidential nominating contest because he does not support a federal constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), has suggested.
In congratulating Mitt Romney for winning the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, Brown noted that the former Massachusetts governor has signed the group's anti-gay marriage pledge and Paul has not.
“NOM congratulates Mitt Romney on another impressive victory in the Nevada caucuses, just days after his big win in Florida,” Brown said in a statement. “Governor Romney, who has signed NOM's Marriage Pledge, has now won contests in three different regions of the country and has clearly established himself as the leading candidate.”
Candidates who sign NOM's 5-point pledge promise to support a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court, appoint judges and an attorney general who will “respect the original meaning of the Constitution,” appoint a presidential commission to investigate the “harassment of traditional marriage supporters,” and back legislation that would allow a ballot question on the issue for voters of the District of Columbia.
While the 76-year-old Paul has said he is personally opposed to gay marriage, he has also called on the government to “butt out” of the marriage business.
“I want the government out. If you're going to have government under the constitution, the states have a lot more authority than the federal government has to define it. I'd rather see it be outside of government and then we would not be arguing about this,” he told the Des Moines Register's editorial board.
“Only Ron Paul, who has said that civil marriage should be abolished all together, has refused [to sign NOM's pledge],” the group added. “Paul is the only candidate who has failed to win a single primary or caucus. Rick Santorum won in Iowa while Newt Gingrich won in South Carolina.”

Gay rights have vastly improved over the decades, but have we progressed enough? This lively on-the sofa discussion with Jason Smith a freelance journalist and director of Birmingham salon explores the state of ‘queer progress’ today, from Clinton and Cameron’s advocacy of tying foreign aid to gay rights to Stonewall calling for a policing of anti-gay speech in the playground. Has intolerance of anti-gay intolerants lead to a tyranny of the minority? Are gay individuals so vulnerable they now need posh protectors to police our views and intervene in African states?Gay rights have vastly improved over the decades, but have we progressed enough? Can we say, Brainwashed? This is really upsetting.
My mom didn't tell me she was gay untill I was 13 because she was afraid I wouldn't love her. I'd like to help Sara learn something about what she is missing; a heart. The average 14 year old wants an iPod, iPhone, etc... what 14 year old actually cares about what government dictates about marriage? Makes me wonder what the parents have "homeschooled" her about different races. Clearly they are cowards to coach their child and hide behind her! WOW!Can we say, Brainwashed? After moving to Denver in the late ’80s, I sat in a hospital room with a gay friend (who was a terrific elementary teacher). He had been cornered by several young people who were trolling for a gay person to beat up. They beat him with a baseball bat and kicked him in the head until his eyes were so swollen he couldn’t see. For three days he was in a coma. I stayed with him until the swelling went down in his face and he wasn’t afraid someone would come back and kill him. He was a small man, and one of the kindest people I have ever known. His father was a Baptist preacher, and he was excommunicated from the family (with the exception of his sister). He thought moving to a bigger city would help.
The charge for nearly killing Mark was reduced to a misdemeanor. Those who beat him paid a $50 fine and were turned back out on the street to harm another day. After moving to Denver in the late ’80s, I sat in a hospital room with a gay... more

Thrice-married Newt Gingrich, who has previously described same-sex marriage as “a temporary aberration that will dissipate,” told a right-wing radio show this afternoon that gay and lesbian unions are akin to “pagan” behaviors:
GINGRICH: It’s pretty simple: marriage is between a man and a woman. This is a historic doctrine driven deep into the Bible, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament, and it’s a perfect example of what I mean by the rise of paganism. The effort to create alternatives to marriage between a man and a woman are perfectly natural pagan behaviors, but they are a fundamental violation of our civilization.
The former speaker is apparently unaware that many in the Christian faith support same-sex marriage, or at least unions, including: Evangelical Lutherans, Episcopalians, Presbyterians (U.S.A), adherents of the United Church of Christ, and Unitarian Universalists. Polls also show that a majority of Catholics and non-evangelical white Protestants back marriage rights for gay couples.

Mitt Romney is a permanent member of what I like to call Darwin's Workshop. He is always evolving, and that makes it difficult to pinpoint his positions on anything. He changes positions like people change their underwear (daily). However, one thing is certain. As he makes his presidential run in 2012, Mitt Romney is not a progressive in any sense of the word.

A heterosexual New York couple has fallen on tough marital times in recent months after their state became the sixth to legalize same-sex marriage, a source close to the couple said yesterday.
Tracey and William Elder of Lockport, New York have seen their marriage descend into shambles since June when Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law that made it legal for homosexual men and women to get married. Both Elders have opposed the measure for years.
"How can I be expected to love my husband the same way as before?" Tracey was overhead asking her friend at the salon last week, clearly concerned of the effects this contentious issue has had on her own marriage.
Since the bill went into effect this summer, Tracey has reportedly realized herself to be only minimally attracted to William, which has led her to increase the frequency at which she is withholding intercourse from her husband when he fucks up or when she needs to make a point about something.
"I haven't been sexually satisfied since the Clinton Administration," she said during her monthly cut and color. "And even then it wasn't because of my husband, I just love how Bill handles...

Republicans and neo-conservatives have been clamoring about the threat same-sex marriage poses to the institute of traditional marriage. Gay and lesbian couples who have gained the right to marry in some states have already proven more of a commitment to their life-partners than Kardashian showed to her hubby; if Bieber truly did cheat on his long-time girlfriend, well, not to be graphic here, but it wasn’t his values doing the salutin’.
