For years, tech journalists and users alike have complained about the so-called “Apple Tax,” or the premium you pay for a Mac over a similarly-configured Windows notebook. However, when comparing the just-announced $999 MacBook with similarly-speced PCS, such as the Dell Studio XPS 13, Samsung Q320, and Acer Aspire 3935, we found that that the Windows camp no longer really has an edge.

The first netbook to hit US shores with Nvidia's Ion LE is the HP Mini 311. It's getting a lot of buzz and we gave it an editor's choice in our full review. The main thing everyone is curious to know is whether it can play games like World of Warcraft or Spore. Plus, the ability to output 1080p HD video via HDMI is pretty sweet.

Sony isn't calling it a netbook, but at 11-inches with an Intel Atom processor inside, what else would you call it? The Sony Vaio X is so thin and so light it's almost unbelievable. We wondered how there could possibly be any hardware inside the champagne gold chassis as it felt so incredibly weightless.
We were further shocked to learn that it's supposed to get up to 17 hours of battery life. Even the Nokia Booklet 3G (our hands-on video with that is here: http://blog.laptopmag.com/hands-on-at-last-with-the-nokia-booklet-3g-netbook ) is only rated at 12 and isn't nearly as thin or light. Yet with the extended battery (which weighs 0.9 lbs), that's what Sony claims it should get.
Another comparison to the Booklet 3G: the Vaio X will come with integrated 3G wireless (through Verizon). Finally, price: $1,299. Yes. A premium price for a premium netbook. And this is Sony we're talking about, so we weren't too surprised.

The HP Envy 13 is getting a lot of attention for an aesthetic reminiscent of the MacBook Pro. But there's more to the new Envy line of laptops than emulation. Laptop Magazine sat down with Stacy Wolff, director of design for HP mobile products, and asked him about the creation of the new Envys. Microsoft's Courier booklet was surprising, mostly because it was so far outside of what everybody now expects from a tablet. This internal video shows how Microsoft thinks we'll use Courier.
Since publishing the first leak, several more people have come forward with details on the Courier project.
This video is produced by the same firm that collaborated with Microsoft's Pioneer Studios on the previous clip, and it walks through a slightly different (and more conservative/realistic) iteration of the Courier interface. The Intel "Clarksfield" Core i7 processor boasts four cores and is the chipmaker's first mobile chip based on its new Nehalem microarchitecture. Most Intel processors will move to this design in 2010.
Dell is trying to take an early lead in embracing the new technology. Dell's flagship product for the mobile Core i7 will be the 15-inch Alienware M15x gaming laptop. Dell is also offering the chip as an option on other laptop models worldwide, including the Studio 15 and Studio 17.
The Dell Studio 17 will feature the Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz processor, a 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics chip, 17.3-inch HD+ (1600x900) display, and 9-cell battery.
The Studio 17 starts at $1,099.
Dell will also offer the Studio 15 with Core i7. Configurations include Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics chip, and 4GB of memory. Pricing start at $999.
