Ayatollahs cast growing shadow in Latin America | ajc.com

The Obama administration must take note. Ahmadinejad’s regime promises to have strategic repercussions in America’s neighborhood. The expansion of Iranian influence in the Western Hemisphere — diplomatic, economic, military and terrorist infrastructure — has been rapid.

In little more than two years, the number of Iranian diplomatic representatives in the region has increased from six to 11 and the number of diplomatic personnel has grown proportionately. This multiplication of Iran’s ties with Latin America has been the result of a strategic convergence.

Tehran sees its penetration in the region as essential to its efforts to weaken Washington international influence. The radical leftist governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua view Iran as a partner with whom they share common ground: hostility towards the U.S. The result is an anti-American alliance in the heart of the Western Hemisphere.

The growth of political ties has been followed by an expansion of economic interests. Iran has invested in a huge array of industries in Venezuela, ranging from car factories to cement production plants. The Islamic Republic has agreed to build a refinery and a petrochemical plant in Ecuador. Tehran is also making efforts to increase its commercial and cooperation ties with Mexico and Brazil.

Furthermore, Iran is seeking to develop military ties with Venezuela. In 2007, Tehran signed an agreement to collaborate on defense matters, which has already resulted in the provision of a dozen Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). At the same time Tehran has become a key partner in the development of the space program and the nuclear projects of Caracas and announced plans to build a munitions factory in the Venezuelan state of Carabobo.

The most worrisome Iranian activity in Latin America, however, is the establishment of terrorist infrastructures linked to Iran. Tehran employs a combination of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — Vahidi was the head of IRGC’s Quds Force — and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah in its covert operations. The presence of both organizations in Latin America has substantially increased in recent years.

For example, the IRGC is cooperating closely with Venezuelan intelligence agencies. Tehran sent observers to military exercises organized by Caracas in 2008. Hezbollah has built a network of relations with Venezuelan citizens, making Caracas Hezbollah’s gateway into Latin America. As the U.S. Treasury Department denounced, one Venezuelan diplomat accredited in Beirut, Ghazi Nasr al Din, provided support to Hezbollah, including help with setting up its fund-raising apparatus in Latin America.The Obama administration must take note. This site is in English and I've found it both comprehensive and informative. Current news, video, even Iranian govt web sites are included.

A top election official in Iran says the box-by-box details of the vote will be released. This is normally considered confidential information. Obviously many people that voted for Mousavi consider the ballots themselves to be corrupted so why count fraudulent ballots. And remembering that they have admitted already that in up to 50 locations they received more ballots than they had eligible voters this exercise would seem pointless.

Many people are still adamant on a National Strike which takes effect from tomorrow Tuesday June 22nd 2009..

Some injured protesters are reportedly afraid to visit any hospital in Tehran as the Basij have been visiting hospitals collecting personal contact information from the victims. This is why many people have been trying to seek refuge and medical attention in the Foreign Embassies in Tehran. Today there are rumors that the Iranian Government want to rid Tehran of certain Embassies that were involved in this. Parsian Hospital East Sarv-e Avenue near Farhang Square may be accepting injured people anonymously today. The Canadian Embassy was not staffed over the weekend so they certainly were not accommodating anyone.

There have been major clashes today with the protesters. Reports are suggesting that people are being attacked by Police, Hezbollah and Basij forces. Batons and Tear Gas are being used to disperse the peaceful protesters. The police are firing their weapons into the air as a sign of warning. The clashes have broken out at Haft Tir Square and Ferdosi Square. In each location their are thousands of protesters. Some protesters have been trying to hand flowers to the Police and other opposing forces.

The girl in the video below is called Neda Agha Soltan. born 1982, she was a philosophy student. Neda's body has been given back to her family by the police under the condition that there is a quick and discrete / secret / low profile funeral. The Mosques in Tehran are under pressure not to accept the funeral proceedings for Neda. Already the original ceremony at Masjed Al-Reza Mosque located on Niloufar Square was cancelled. It was scheduled for 4.30pm today.
