Ecuadorian Cofan Indians are suing Chevron for the destruction of the Amazon River, and the jungle their ancestors inhabited for thousands of years. Cancer and other oil related diseases plague the Cofan Indians, diseases that were not as prevalent before Chevron traded land for cheese in the early 1970s. Hundreds of oil pits interrupt the jungle floor while Cofan children unwittingly swim in them.
The Cofans suit will likely become an international foreign affairs extravaganza. Chevron has powerful friends in Washington. Condoleezza Rice served on Chevron's board for 10 years. They named an oil tanker after her. Ecuador on the other hand, has strong political ties with Venezuela and Hugo Chavez. Together they told the United States to remove it's military base from Ecuador.
Meanwhile, the Cofans must prove the increased rate of Cancer is caused by Chevron. A task that should not be too hard based on the riveting images in this Democracy Now! video report.

Extracting tar sands is tantamount to a junkie looking for a vein in their toes to stick to get their fix when they have run out of veins. It is a desperate attempt to cling to the addiction of oil while touting it as sustainable when it is not. And it is not only unsustainable to this planet in the amount of water its process uses, it does not produce less in GHGS and is destroying one of the most pristine places on this planet at the cost of human health and other species. The Boreal Forest is being stripped, and water from the Athabasca River is being diverted to the detriment of fish and humans. Just how far will we allow this to go to satisfy our addiction to oil? How much more can this Earth take?Extracting tar sands is tantamount to a junkie looking for a vein in their toes to... more

FUQING, China - Here in southern China, beneath the looming mountains of Fujian Province, lie dozens of enormous ponds filled with murky brown water and teeming with eels, shrimp and tilapia, much of it destined for markets in Japan and the West.
Fuqing is one of the centers of a booming industry that over two decades has transformed this country into the biggest producer and exporter of seafood in the world, and the fastest-growing supplier to the United States.
This is Part VIII of "CHOKING ON GROWTH"
A series of articles and multimedia examining the human toll, global impact and political challenge of China's epic pollution crisis by The New York Times.

Dow Chemical and a unit of Kuwait Petroleum said on Thursday they will form a petrochemicals joint venture to link the Middle East company's vast energy supply with Dow's industry-leading market reach.
The joint venture will manufacture and sell chemicals used in products ranging from plastic bottles, compact disks and computers to agricultural compounds.
"By selectively investing in downstream petrochemical businesses, we are maximizing the value of Kuwait's hydrocarbons resources while diversifying our national economy and increasing job opportunities," Saad Al-Shuwaib, chief executive of Kuwait Petroleum, said in a statement.

James Ibori is being accused of corruption and money-laundering and is finally being investigated by the country's anti-corruption agency. Ibori is well connected, and loaded - he was seen as a key financier of President Umaru Yar'Adua's campaign for April's elections. He's already under investigation in the UK, where a court froze assets worth $35m...but his salary while in office was $25K per year.
Who's surprised?

Boycotting bottled water, sodas and other unnecessary items in plastic will go a long way in my view in saving this planet from drowning and choking itself. I have boycotted all drinks in plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other useless plastic items and urge others to do the same. The state I live in is now considering doing away with plastic bags in stores. More and more cities and countries are seeing the truth about bottled water. It seems people are waking up to the destruction it does to this planet. And doing this not only saves on trash and pollution, it saves other species that eat the plastic in our waterways and die from it and also saves other resources. It is also the moral thing to do in light of the fact that over one billion people on this planet do not even have a potable source of water. To then think that people here only drink it to look fashionable actually makes me ill. We as a nation have a huge waking up to experience regarding our priorities and world view. This is a great step in that direction.Boycotting bottled water, sodas and other unnecessary items in plastic will go a long... more

No one wants those American dollars anymore. Here is one more turn away from the dollar as it's value slips away. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said :
"At the moment selling oil in dollars has been completely halted, in line with the policy of selling crude in non-dollar currencies," Nozari was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.
"The dollar is an unreliable currency, considering its devaluation and the oil exporters' losses," he added.

BP, the British oil giant that pledged to move "Beyond Petroleum" is investing nearly £1.5bn to extract oil from the Canadian wilderness using methods which environmentalists say are part of the "biggest global warming crime" in history.
Greenpeace pledged a direct action campaign against the multinational oil and gas producer BP following its decision to reverse a long-standing policy and invest heavily in extracting so-called "oil sands" that lie beneath the Canadian province of Alberta
Producing crude oil from the tar sands generates up to four times more carbon dioxide, the principal global warming gas, than conventional drilling. The booming oil sands industry will produce 100 million tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to a fifth of the UK's entire annual emissions) a year by 2012, ensuring that Canada will miss its emission targets under the Kyoto treaty, according to environmentalist activists.
It takes about 29kg of CO2 to produce a barrel of oil conventionally. That figure can be as much 125kg for tar sands oil. It also has the potential to kill off or damage the vast forest wilderness, greater than the size of England and Wales, which forms part of the world's biggest carbon sinks. For BP to be involved in this trade not only flies in the face of their rhetoric but in the era of climate change it should not be being developed at all.BP, the British oil giant that pledged to move "Beyond Petroleum" is... more

There are two intelligence analyses that are relevant to the balance of power between the U.S. and Iran one is the latest U.S. assessment of Iran, which certainly gave a much more complex view of what is happening there. The other is the Iranian National Intelligence Estimate of America, which my guess would read something like this:

KIRKUK, Iraq Even by the skewed standards of a country where millions are homeless or in exile, the squalor of the Kirkuk soccer stadium is a startling sight.
What rankles the stadiums impoverished Kurds most is that while they remain in a foul-smelling limbo, on the other side of town some of the Arabs who were forcibly moved here by Saddam Hussein still live in comfortable suburbs, a legacy of the dictators notorious 1980s Anfal campaign to depopulate Kurdish areas and Arabize Tamim.

This has been on the cards for a while, both Venezuela and Iran had made discussions about trading oil in the Euro instead of the Dollar. I think this is probably a double whammy, since they can make a strong political point and it also makes sense economically because of the declining value of the dollar.
One of the reasons the dollar has remained strong is because it is a well accepted currency around the world and many big countries trade in it. This means there are a lot of dollars in circulation. Changing trade to the Euro or other currencies could really unsettle the U.S dollars value even more.
This is a very bold move by the Iranians but I see no reason why they shouldn't trade in a currency that makes more sense for them.
It could be a kick start for the invasion. What do you guys think? This has been on the cards for a while, both Venezuela and Iran had made discussions... more

Brushing aside a veto threat from the White House, the House passed a package of energy measures on Thursday that includes a 40 percent increase in fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks sold in the United States. But the measure stalled today in the Senate, as expected.
The bills supporters say it will reduce the nations dependence on imported oil, jump-start development of clean-energy technologies and sharply reduce the nations production of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide.
But the complex and costly bill faces the prospect of a radical rewrite in the Senate because of opposition there to two provisions: $21 billion in new taxes, mostly on the oil industry, and a mandate that electric utilities must generate 15 percent of their power from alternative sources, like wind or solar. The White House threatened to veto the bill if the final version contains those or several other provisions passed by the House.

On Friday, an oil tanker collided with a barge carrying a crane which caused 10,000 tons of oil to gush out into the Yellow Sea.
They stopped the flow by Friday evening.
This is largest spill in S. Korea's history. The previous record was in 1995 when the Sea Prince struck a reef spilling 5,000 tons of oil.

Seventh Generations business motto just about says it all:
"In Every Deliberation We Must Consider
The Impact of Our Decisions On The
Next Seven Generations."
From the Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy
Look for products that have a high recycled content, including high post-consumer content. Post-consumer fibers are recovered from paper that was previously used by consumers and would otherwise have been dumped into a landfill or an incinerator.
I think that everything they make is also of the highest quality.
Seventh Generation diapers are nice if you need to use a disposable diaper, however, they do contain gel. I would recommend there cleaning products as well, They're great for sensitive people.Seventh Generations business motto just about says it all:
