You probably heard about the terrorist attacks in Jakarta today. In terms of body count, it wasn't a very good showing by the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorists, who only killed 9 and wounded 52. But their objective isn't a body count - it is to, ahem, terrorize.
Hence why a hotel, and not a military checkpoint or political rally or whatever. Indonesia has a booming tourist economy, and the terrorists there want to scare travelers away. In fact, in the last decade, seems like most hotels in Indonesia have been bombed... Scared tourists will go to some other country now, and hotels will have to spend a buttload more money on security to try to calm those panicky travelers down. Rule number 4: If you're fighting someone in power, chaos hurts those in power, and thus helps you.
In fact, this is so many hotel attacks in a row that its hard to believe a sensible terrorist group is behind it. They even hit the same hotel they hit in 2003! This wasn't a very big operation - not too spectacular, and it's been done before. So there's not much terrorist street cred in carrying it out. bin Laden isn't calling these guys up to congratulate them.
Tourism in Indonesia isn't a huge business - only 6.5 million tourists last year bringing in $7.4 billion dollars. But that was just as memory of the Bali bombings and other attacks was fading from the rich Westerner's memory (its ok if you forgot about them too...). The Bali bombing in 2002 probably lost Indonesia half a million tourists, as it went from 5.0 million tourists and $4.3 billion down to 4.5 million tourists and $4.0 billion in revenue. So the spectacular attack cost Indonesia something like a half billion dollars in lost revenue, and probably double that including the damage to persons and property.
In comparison, Indonesia had 16,548 traffic fatalities in 2007. So 9 deaths is about 17 hours worth of car fatalities... not too terrorizing. You probably heard about the terrorist attacks in Jakarta today. In terms of body... more

On 6 August 1945, he was in Hiroshima, preparing to return home from a business trip when the American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped an atomic bomb on the city. Yamaguchi lived, while 140,000 other people who were in the city that morning died, some in an agonising instant, others many months later.
Burned and barely able to comprehend what had happened - only that he had witnessed a bomb unlike any used before - Yamaguchi spent a fitful night in an air raid shelter before returning home the following day.On 6 August 1945, he was in Hiroshima, preparing to return home from a business trip... more

The head of the Real IRA was found liable Monday along with three other men for the 1998 Omagh bombing, in a landmark Belfast civil court ruling on a case brought by the victims' families.
Twenty-nine people, including Spanish tourists visiting the town, were killed in the bombing, the worst atrocity in three decades of violence which wracked the British province.
No-one has been convicted in a criminal court over the attack, but victims' relatives launched a civil legal action against five men they accuse of plotting the bombing, including Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt.
Morgan awarded more than 1.6 million pounds ($2.5 million) in damages to 12 named relatives who filed the suit.

BAGHDAD — At least 75 people were killed and 120 injured in two explosions in Iraq on Thursday that shook a quiet residential Baghdad neighborhood and a restive city north of the capital where Iranian tourists were targeted.
In the first attack, a woman wearing a suicide belt exploded herself in the Karada district of Baghdad as dozens of people lined up at a food giveaway, killing 28, including 12 police officers, and injuring 50, according to an Interior Ministry official.
In the second attack, in Muqdadiya in Diyala Province, a bomb went off inside a restaurant where a group of Iranian tourists were eating lunch, killing 47 and injuring 70, according to police officials. All but five of the dead and injured appeared to be Iranians. It was not immediately clear whether the explosion had been caused by a suicide bomber. Two of the dead and three of the wounded were Iraqis, officials said.
The attack in Baghdad came as food was being distributed by members of the Iraqi police and the Red Crescent charity in front of an apartment building. In the aftermath of the blast, the street was littered with bags of flour and red apples, and pieces of human flesh attracted masses of flies.
One woman who said she did not know what had happened to her children sat on the sidewalk wailing. Iraqis arrived in tears to hunt for missing family members.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Susan Walton suffered a facial skull fracture, nerve damage behind both eyes, a broken nose, multiple jaw fractures, six broken teeth, a ruptured spleen, and legs crushed beneath both knees.
Walton, of northwest Oklahoma City, suffered her injuries in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The blast killed 168 people.
She and her husband, Richard Walton, and others filled the Oklahoma City National Memorial lawn during the 14th annual remembrance ceremony on a chilly, blustery Sunday morning.
"We come for the same reason they built the memorial — for us to remember and to have hope for the future, and to see the people we've made friends with over the years whose lives were affected," said Walton, who is doing well now, following years of recovery.
Gov. Brad Henry and Jane Lute, U.S. Department of Homeland Security deputy secretary, attended the 55-minute event that was more spiritual than political in nature.
Six leaders of various religions prayed or read scriptures, including the Rev. Alex Reid, a priest from Dublin, Ireland, and 2009 recipient of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Reflections of Hope Award. The remembrance also included two songs performed by Oklahoma performing artist Jami Smith.
After the ceremony, many in attendance stayed a while longer and shared thoughts of loved ones. Others silently paid tribute at the Field of Empty Chairs or off by themselves.OKLAHOMA CITY — Susan Walton suffered a facial skull fracture, nerve damage... more

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Five U.S. soldiers were killed Friday in a suicide bombing in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the U.S. military said.
A suicide truck bomber breached the outer security barrier of the national police headquarters in southern Mosul, and detonated his explosives, killing eight people and wounding 60 others, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said.
The ministry said those killed include five Americans, two Iraqi policemen and an Iraqi soldier.
Despite a number of military operations in this volatile city during the past year, Mosul remains one of the most violent places in Iraq. Last year the U.S. military said Mosul was the last urban stronghold of al Qaeda in Iraq.
Mosul is the provincial capital of Nineveh and is about 260 miles, or 420 kilometers, north of Baghdad.

"In occupied Paris, a Gestapo officer who had barged his way into Picasso's apartment pointed at a photo of the mural, Guernica, asking: "Did you do that?"
"No," Picasso replied, "you did", his wit fizzing with the anger that animates the piece.
Work started weeks after German bombers had unleashed an early dose of Blitzkreig on the Basque town from which the work takes its name. It was first shown at the world fair in Paris, supposedly a showcase for scientific progress, but the deaths of hundreds of civilians in a small Spanish town proved technology's darker side. As in Picasso's cubist days, there are symbols and broken shapes aplenty, but with Guernica there is no need to decipher. The message is stark, with immediate impact. In black and white, the piece has the urgency of a newspaper photo. Flailing bulls and horses show that the visceral horrors of war are not just an affront to human civilisation, but to life. With the help of Stepney trade unionists, keen to raise awareness of Spain's civil war,
in 1939 Guernica came to Whitechapel art gallery. Next week the gallery reopens after an overhaul, and a full-size tapestry copy will form part of an installation by artist Goshka Macuga. It is borrowed from the UN, where it normally hangs outside the security council chamber. When Colin Powell was setting out the American case for war against Iraq in 2003, it was decided it would be "appropriate" to cover it up, a tale that offers a powerful rejoinder to Wildean quips about all art being perfectly useless.""In occupied Paris, a Gestapo officer who had barged his way into Picasso's... more

I can't believe this hasn't been in the news!
A woman in Maine shot her husband and upon investigation it comes to light that he was a wife beating, nazi loving, Obama hating, millionaire planning domestic terrorism. But only after he's been killed do the police and FBI discover what he was plotting, and apparently if it weren't for wikileaks the story wouldn't be getting anything but local press.
The curious tale of an Obama hating, cashed up, nuclear Timothy McVeigh from Maine.
By Julian Assange (investigations editor)
It has all the makings of a great story. But outside of the US state of Maine and select counter-terrorism circles, you won't have heard about it. For this is a story with all the right ingredients but one wrong ingredient.
On the right side is a leaked FBI intelligence report, Obama's inauguration, a multi-million dollar trust fund, a woman, uranium, thorium, the first attempt to build a "dirty bomb" on US soil, and, of course, murder.
On the wrong is the body of James G. Cummings, white supremacist millionaire, found in his Belfast home on December 9, 2008, shot to death.
After local police attended the scene, the FBI moved in and sealed off the building. Men in protective suits descended on the home but police refused to comment about what they found. Mrs. Cummings was taken into custody.
Then on January 12, 2009, Wikileaks revealed a confidential FBI field intelligence report on the incident as part of a Presidential inauguration threat analysis.[1]
According to the FBI report, Cummings had four lots of one gallon containers of bomb-grade hydrogen peroxide, uranium, thorium (also radioactive), lithium metal, thermite, aluminum powder, beryllium (radiation booster), boron, black iron oxide and magnesium ribbon.
While the radiation levels from Cummings initial device would have not have been physically significant compared to its explosive and toxic effects, had Cummings set off the device in Washington DC, during Obama's Presidential inauguration, its psychogenic effect may have hospitalized thousands.
The FBI states it also seized literature on how to build “dirty bombs” and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60 and other radioactive materials.
There was also evidence linking Cummings to white supremacist groups, including Cummings' membership application to the US National Socialist (Nazi) party.

ISLAMABAD March 7, 2009, 11:31 am ET · Three separate bombings killed 15 people in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, while authorities investigated reports that a pilotless U.S. drone crashed elsewhere in the militant-plagued region bordering Afghanistan.
The bombings, coming days after gunmen attacked Sri Lanka's visiting cricket team, were a fresh reminder of the militant threat in Pakistan, where Western leaders worry that a growing political feud could distract the government from tackling the extremists head on.
Al-Qaida and Taliban fighters are believed to use pockets of Pakistan's northwest as bases to plan attacks on U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. The U.S. has used drones to fire missile strikes against militants in the area, prompting protests from Pakistani officials who say the attacks fuel anti-American sentiment.

An NHS doctor has been convicted of plotting to bring chaos and murder to London and Glasgow Airport by setting off massive car bombs.
A jury at Woolwich Crown Court found Bilal Abdulla guilty of plotting the home-made bomb attacks in 2007.
Another NHS doctor, Mohammed Asha, was cleared of helping Abdulla and a second attacker, Kafeel Ahmed.
Ahmed died following the Glasgow attack on 30 June 2007, a day after he and Abdulla had attacked London's West End.
Prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw told the jury the men had been intent on "committing murder on an indiscriminate and wholesale scale" in attacks that would occur without warning, spreading panic among the public.
Investigators said they had been shocked to learn of Abdulla's responsible, health sector background.
One senior detective added: "Just the whole idea of people who take the Hippocratic oath who then go on to wantonly seek to destroy human life in the most horrific way imaginable, that is what I find shocking."An NHS doctor has been convicted of plotting to bring chaos and murder to London and... more

Students pelted police with firebombs and stones in Athens on Friday in fresh clashes sparked by the police killing of a teenager, while Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis vowed to keep citizens safe.
Students, angry at the shooting incident, low wages and unemployment, attacked police outside the parliament building on a seventh day of violence that has shaken the government. Riot police responded with teargas.
"Greece is a safe country," Karamanlis told a news conference in Brussels, where he pledged to guarantee the safety of its people and citizens.
Riots since the December 6 shooting of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos have destroyed hundreds of shops, banks and cars, rattled the conservative Karamanlis government and shaken investor confidence in the 240 billion euro economy ($315 billion) as the global crisis bites.
Even as Karamanlis spoke in Brussels, about 5,000 protesters marched through Athens carrying banners saying: "The state kills" and "The government is guilty of murder."Students pelted police with firebombs and stones in Athens on Friday in fresh clashes... more
