A heavy flow of break-ins and thefts from feminine-hygiene dispensers across campus led MSU Police to launch an investigation.
A total of six break-ins and thefts were reported to MSU Police between June 1-12, amounting to at least $7.50 in stolen change, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The incidents have targeted women’s restrooms in buildings across campus, including the Chemistry Building, Human Ecology Building and the Computer Center.
Thefts from feminine-hygiene dispensers have been spotty in the past, she said.
“I can’t recall a time (when) there have been numerous ones at one time,” she said. “Not those type of machines.”
Nutritional sciences senior Sheena Patel said a person who would steal from a tampon machine must be desperate or bored.
“I think that if you’re going to steal something, you should steal it from someplace better than a tampon machine,” she said.
“It’s got to be bad if someone’s stealing from a machine in a bathroom.”
Communication junior Kiersten Anderson said she thought it was ridiculous someone would steal from feminine-hygiene machines.
“I guess I think when you need something, you need something,” she said. “I think that’s a pretty pathetic way to get money because I can’t imagine stealing from a feminine-hygiene machine could be very lucrative. Going out and earning money seems to be more of an honorable and smart way of doing things.”
Some of the machines appeared to have been entered with an unknown tool, McGlothian-Taylor said. She did not know if the machines, which cost about $400, would need to be replaced.
Police are unsure whether one person is responsible for all of the break-ins, but the incidents remain under investigation, McGlothian-Taylor said.
No arrests have been made, but police hope to catch the person or people responsible, she said.A heavy flow of break-ins and thefts from feminine-hygiene dispensers across campus... more

Athletes have steroids, depressives have “happy-pills”, and those who wish to do it all, and do it fast, have Adderall.
A person with a perfectly normal, functioning frontal cortex and dopamine levels will experience a heightened sense of motivation, focus, and concentration. Presumably this is the perfect mood to pull all-nighters, read hundreds of pages at a time, and write pages and pages of that final paper.
The general consensus is that stimulant amphetamines like Adderall do indeed increase performance in those that do and do not have properly diagnosed ADHD. The promise of a better GPA with less effort is promise enough for college students across the board to obtain Adderall by any means necessary. Many students admit to actually seeing doctors and purposefully exaggerating symptoms of ADHD to acquire medication. Others simply pop a generously donated pill from their pals. The danger lies in the possibility of dependence and the rarely considered effect of the drug on those that have preexisting medical problems that can deteriorate with prolonged use.
Since many students assert that they use Adderall only for studying for large tests and completing important assignments, the risk of dependency is high. “I don’t think I’m addicted…..I just can’t imagine not taking it,” says student Susan. Says student Steve: “I attend a major university….I take two pills when I have a ton of work to do….Without Adderall I failed one class….I began to take Adderall again and saw a huge improvement.” The long term effects of using Adderall in this manner are relatively unknown, however it is well known that those that use amphetamines in larger doses by snorting or inhaling can very well be diagnosed with addiction.

NO one ever said it would be easy to live forever. We may need ultra-low calorie diets – think baked soybeans, sardines and protein powders – and we'll certainly need to break a sweat at the gym. But throw in a generous helping of scientific advances, and beating the current world record of 122 1?2 years starts to look downright doable. You might even live to 150 or longer – perhaps much, much longer.
A growing number of maverick scientists, doctors, researchers, biogeneticists and nano-technologists – many with impeccable academic credentials – insist that the war against ageing can be won. All believe significantly longer lifespans and, perhaps eventually, true biological immortality, are not only possible but also scientifically achievable. What's more, it could happen in time to aid those now living.
“The first person to live to be 1,000 years old is certainly alive today; indeed, he or she may be about to turn 60,” says Aubrey de Grey, the Cambridge University geneticist who has become the de facto spokesman of the anti-ageing crusade. “Whether they realise it or not, barring accidents and suicide, most people now 40 years or younger can expect to live for centuries.” Nutty? Some scientists do dismiss de Grey as a wildly optimistic crank. But plenty of others, though not necessarily accepting all his predictions, have joined in the search for a real fountain of youth. “I am working on immortality,” says Michael Rose, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of California, Irvine, who has already achieved breakthrough results extending the lives of fruit flies. “Twenty years ago the idea of postponing aging, let alone reversing it, was weird and off-the-wall. Today there are good reasons for thinking it is fundamentally possible.”

You're a 60-something guy or gal (your pick).
You're ready to go get your flirt on with that 60-something guy or gal (your pick) that you spot lookin cute in the distance.
You make your approach, but shoot... you can't tell if you like the goods or not because guess what? There's a huge blob where their face should be. (Yah, you're feeling kind of superficial and you feel like judging on looks today)
Probably shouldn't have eaten all that processed food when you were younger. You could be spittin mad game with that silver fox right now.
Okay, so this example might be a little far fetched, but here's the bottom line: there's a new link between processed foods and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)- the illness that ruins your central vision/"straight ahead vision" and could lead to blindness.
Of all the illnesses of the eye, AMD is the only one that is sharply on the rise, and new evidence places the blame squarely at the door of processed food, particularly processed fats.

"Mental illness is absolutely going off the charts on college campuses," says Hara Marano, who prepared the report for a May newsletter published in association with Psychology Today. "College counseling centers used to be the backwaters of the mental health care system. Now they are the front line."
--- According to the article, many cases of depression among college students go unnoticed and/or untreated. Why do you think this is the case?
Do you think that the stigma against mental illness is preventing college students from seeking treatment, or do you think that those who are suffering from depression don't realize the severity of it- almost seeing it as a 'normal' part of college life?"Mental illness is absolutely going off the charts on college campuses,"... more

LONDON - A group of English women who posed naked for a calendar 10 years ago to raise money for cancer research are shedding their clothes again.
The women — whose first calendar inspired the movie “Calendar Girls,“ staring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters — have come out with a new 2010 calendar. It was unveiled Monday and is available online.
Like the last time, the women — who range in age from late 50s to mid-70s — are shown engaged in household activities such as gardening, baking and knitting.
They maintain their modesty by being partly concealed by items such flowers and knitting yarn.
The north England ladies got the idea for the first calendar following the death of one of their husbands from cancer in 1998.LONDON - A group of English women who posed naked for a calendar 10 years ago to raise... more

Glamour polled nearly 1,000 women on everything from sitting on public toilets to re-wearing dirty clothes, then sent the results to Billy Goldberg, M.D., and Mark Leyner, authors of “Let’s Play Doctor.” Here, find out which habits are unhealthy — and which are filthy but fine.
As men, we know a little something about being gross. In fact, we’ve pretty much always assumed that whatever the average woman’s personal hygiene habits are, the average man’s are much, much worse. But when we read the results of Glamour’s recent poll of almost 1,000 women, we realized some of you are less civilized than you look (and smell!). Do you need to clean up your act? Well, maybe not; some dirty habits aren’t as nasty, medically speaking, as most people think. Check it out:
Have you ever peed in the shower?
Almost 75 percent of poll-takers have.
Let’s start with a few facts: Toilet flushing accounts for almost 27 percent of indoor water use in a home. The amount used per flush ranges from a gallon in eco-friendly models to a whopping seven in older types. Where are we going with this? We beseech you: Save water. Save the planet! Pee in the shower! OK, we won’t insist. But it isn’t really that gross. Unless you have an infection, urine is sterile and nontoxic. Proponents of “urine therapy” even believe it can help treat athlete’s foot. Heck, Dr. Billy freely admits that he is a shameless shower squirter.
Do you go barefoot at the gym?
32 percent of women admitted doing it.Glamour polled nearly 1,000 women on everything from sitting on public toilets to... more

SPF creep has hit the triple digits with Neutrogena's SPF 100+ sunblock, leading some dermatologists to complain that this is merely a numbers game that confuses consumers.

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Authorities leveraged a fake abuse claim to justify a massive raid of a polygamist sect's ranch when their true purpose was to persecute an unpopular religious group, attorneys for 10 indicted members of the sect said Wednesday.
The lawyers asked a judge to throw out evidence seized in the raid, but state prosecutors said law enforcement had probable cause to search the Yearning For Zion Ranch last year and that the evidence, including documents that list plural and underage marriages and pregnancies among sect girls, should not be suppressed.
Twelve members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have been indicted on charges including sexual assault of a child and bigamy since the April 2008 raid, in which more than 400 sect children were temporarily swept into custody. The suppression motion covers all but jailed sect leader Warren Jeffs, who awaits trial in Arizona on charges of being accomplice to rape, and a sect member who faces only misdemeanor charges.SAN ANGELO, Texas - Authorities leveraged a fake abuse claim to justify a massive raid... more

Richard Fagerlund - SFC -- I have done many bedbug jobs, and I have never had a callback or had to make more than one trip, and I don't use pesticides. I consider pesticides to be more dangerous than the insects. Diatomaceous earth, soap, water, alcohol, silica gel and duct tape will help you solve bedbug problems if the materials are used correctly.
Diatomaceous earth applied properly to the interior of the box spring will eliminate one of their hiding areas. You can mix water (40 percent), alcohol (40 percent) and dish soap (20 percent) to spray any bedbugs you find. Be sure to check the seams of the mattress and around the buttons as well as under any labels. Silica gel is a good residual that should be placed where bedbugs hide. It will leave a white film where it is placed. Duct tape can be used to remove any egg clusters you find on the mattress or box spring. It is important that you know the biology and natural history of bedbugs when you attempt control so you don't apply these products or any others in the wrong areas.
I hope to post the entire procedure for controlling bedbugs without pesticides on my Web site soon. Meanwhile, contact me at askthe bugman.com if you want a company that can control bedbugs without using dangerous pesticides.

NEW YORK - Elizabeth Edwards writes in a new memoir that news of her husband's affair made her vomit in a bathroom.
In the book scheduled to be published May 12, Edwards says her husband, John, admitted to the betrayal just days after declaring his run for president in 2006. She says she wanted him to drop out of the race to protect the family from media scrutiny, but stood by his side anyway.
John Edwards went public with the affair in August after the National Enquirer reported he was the father of videographer Rielle Hunter's daughter.
Elizabeth Edwards never identifies Hunter by name. But she says that while her life may be tragic, Hunter's is “pathetic.”

American tastes dominated the world's automotive market for a century, but all that's changing now. Today it's the increasingly well-to-do Chinese car-buyer that industry wants to woo and win, thanks to this incredible fact—China has, over the last three months running, surpassed the U.S. in terms of volume sales of automobiles. Ever wonder why Ford's new Fiesta has an instrument panel that looks like a cell phone? Because that's what's familiar to its target audience of
20- and 30-something Chinese. It's also why Chinese versions of the Fiesta come in sedan size, with four doors, rather than as hatchbacks, which are anathema in the Middle Kingdom.
The future of auto design was on display last week at the Shanghai Auto Show, where, in 30 football fields worth of space, international and domestic carmakers vied for the attention of Chinese consumers. The timing of the biennial event, China's oldest international auto show, was fortuitous.
No one expected the Middle Kingdom to nab first place in the global auto market from America for at least another decade, but the financial crisis has had a sharp dampening effect on U.S. sales. The Chinese, meanwhile, spurred on by their government's enormous stimulus package, have kept spending. Beijing's 2009 auto sales target is 10 million units, an increase of 10 percent from 2008, and a figure that would cement its position, with an estimated 1 million more unit sales than the U.S. "No one expected China to emerge as the leading volume market this fast," says William Russo, a Beijing-based business consultant who specializes in the automotive sector. "This will give China a huge say in setting the standards and architecture for the entire industry."American tastes dominated the world's automotive market for a century, but all... more

Health officials on Thursday stressed people with flulike symptoms should avoid public transportation but said everyone else needs only to follow commonsense precautions, as the nation's swine flu cases passed 100, reaching 15 states.
“There’s no one action that’s going to stop this, there’s no silver bullet,” Dr. Richard Besser, acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a news briefing Thursday.
But many actions, taken together, could lessen impact of the flu, he said. Besser couldn't comment whether the virus is changing to become more virulent as it moves from to person to person.
The Obama administration stood solidly against closing the U.S.-Mexico border, with Vice President Joe Biden calling it "a monumental undertaking" that would do little good.
Most cases in U.S. recovering
Authorities said with the virus already in several states — including South Carolina, with 10 confirmed cases — closing the border now would be, as President Barack Obama put it Wednesday night, "akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out."
There have been schools closed in roughly 100 school systems, and Seattle and Huntsville, Ala., joined the list Thursday as officials awaited word on whether some sick children had the infection.
Biden reiterated on Thursday advice the administration has been eagerly dispensing: "A parent whose child's school is closed out of a precaution or because there's been a confirmed case of flu should not take the child then to a day care center. They're going to have to take them home."Health officials on Thursday stressed people with flulike symptoms should avoid public... more
