It must have been a driver's worst nightmare - cruising down the highway and suddenly running smack into millions of angry swarming bees.
The bees were on the loose in California after a truck in which they were being transported flipped on its side on the highway.
The California Highway Patrol said eight to 12 million of the honey bees escaped from the crates in which they were stored.
The truck was carrying over 400 beehives with 30,000 bees in each.
The bees stung police officers, fire crews, and tow truck drivers trying to corral them after the accident.
"People were being stung left and right. It was an ugly, ugly scene," one police officer said.
The great escape happened near Sacramento and the insects swarmed over an area of Highway 99.
For seven hours authorities brought in handlers who used smoke in a bid to calm the bees and coax them back into the hives.
Several beekeepers driving past the accident stopped to help the emergency services deal with the bees.
The highway had to be closed for a period.
Police did not know what caused the tractor trailer carrying the bees to flip over while entering the highway on its way to Yakima, Washington. But they said they believe the driver may have been driving too fast.
The bees had been used to pollinate crops in the San Joaquin Valley.
The honeybee is the world's premier pollinator and is invaluable to farmers for pollination.
But there has been a shortage of them in recent times because of "Colony Collapse Disorder". US beekeepers have been losing thousands of their bees, puzzling scientists. This has led to a rise in honey prices and has also threatened fruit and vegetable production.
After a seven-hour clean-up operation at Sacramento, police were unable to say how many bees remained unaccounted for. But they were not getting any calls from panicked drivers. "No news is good news," one officer said.

James Bond's Aston Martin has crashed into a lake in Italy while being driven to the set of the secret agent's latest film.
The producers of 'Quantum of Solace' say the car was being delivered to the filming unit in heavy rain on Saturday morning when it went off the road and plunged into Lake Garda in the north of the country.
The driver was said to have swum ashore and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The damaged black car had to be fished out of the water by a crane.
The car was one of several available for shooting, which has so far seen the crew filming in England, Panama, Chile and Mexico.
The newest film in the 007 series stars Daniel Craig and is due for release later this year.James Bond's Aston Martin has crashed into a lake in Italy while being driven to... more

A Reading man climbed atop a moving minivan Friday on the West Shore Bypass, stood on the roof and rode the vehicle until it crashed and catapulted him into the woods, West Reading police reported.
Witnesses told police that the man then climbed up an embankment, stripped naked and ran several hundred yards down the busy highway bleeding from a foot-long gash in his side.
"I’ve never seen anything like this in 22 years," West Reading police Detective Joseph M. Brown said of the 3 p.m. incident. "It is not a common call we get as police."
Police responding to calls from frantic motorists used three separate jolts from a Taser and pepper spray to subdue the nude man.
The Taser had no effect, and police eventually tackled the 38-year-old from Reading, Brown said.
He was taken to Reading Hospital, police said. The hospital listed him in critical condition Friday night.
The Reading Eagle is withholding the man’s name because he has not been charged.
Brown said the investigation continues and police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
The bizarre scene unfolded as witnesses reported seeing a minivan going about 55 mph and swerving in the westbound lanes of the bypass near the Penn Avenue interchange.
A witness, Les Miller of West Lawn, was driving west when he saw the minivan crash into the guide rail between Penn Avenue and North Wyomissing Boulevard.
Miller said he saw clothes on the highway shoulder and a naked man with a long cut on his torso running toward him.
"He was waving his arms in the air like he was lost or he was on something," Miller said. "It wasn’t like a panicked look on his face; he was just in a daze."
Miller saw police approaching, so he didn’t stop.

Researchers at the University of South Florida Public Health have released a study that shows a significant spike in accidents at intersections that use cameras to catch light runners. Why? Drivers are more likely to slam on their brakes when the signal turns yellow, causing tailgaters to ram into them.
The spike is not insignificant. The USF study focused on Florida, and found that traffic fatalities caused by red-light running were not increasing. In fact, they account for less than 4% of the state's yearly traffic deaths. From the study:
"The injury rate from red-light running crashes has dropped by a third in less than a decade, indicating red-light running crashes have been continually declining in Florida without the use of cameras."Researchers at the University of South Florida Public Health have released a study... more

Imagine sitting in a car and the driver blacks out, leaving you careening into the central reservation doing 70 mph. Do you think you could think quickly enough to save it turning into a probably fatal crash?
Jonathon Anderson did. After his mum blacked out doing 70mph on a dual-carriageway, Jonathon Anderson turned 'superhero' grabbing the steering wheel just as the car smashed into the central reservation, managing to hit the brakes and hazard lights, and then calmly easing the car across all three lanes of traffic and steering it into a tree to end its near catastrophic crash.
His mother, Marion Anderson, 34, who runs a curtain-making business, said: "He is my little superhero. The last thing I remember is driving over the flyover to take Jonathan to school."
Wonder if she let him have the day off? Imagine sitting in a car and the driver blacks out, leaving you careening into the... more

This is some of the most lawless, crazy and scary race car driving I've ever seen. I'm watching some of these crashes and can't believe how much these guys are willing to endure! It's insane just how much they want to hurt themselves and destroy their cars.
