(Newser) - The mini-missives that online friends send each other create what experts call "ambient awareness" a form of contact akin to picking up a friend's body language or asides in the same room. Alone they add up to little, "but taken together, over time, the little snippets coalesce into a surprisingly sophisticated portrait of your friends and family members lives, like thousands of dots making a pointillist painting," Clive Thompson writes in the New York Times.
It's like I can distantly read everyones mind; one user told Thompson. I love that. I feel like Im getting to something raw about my friends." The messages can also spark social contact when friends read about each other's plans. But there are possible downsides to online friendship too, like losing sight of the real thing. At one point I realized I had a friend whose child I had seen, via photos on Flickr, grow from birth to 1 year old, one user said. I thought, I really should go meet her in person.

As odd or paradoxical as it may seem, I envision video games being increasingly designed to facilitate human development, as virtual reality technologies continue to evolve and integrate with leading edge developmental practices.
Now being a 38 year-“young” man researching video games at the dawn of the 21st century, I still feel quite amazed and dazzled with what is now being called “a new generation of interactive entertainment”. Recent technological and artistic developments have made some of these games to be so realistic, meaningful and potentially engaging that the line between “virtual” and “real” reality are really starting to fade away... Transported through time from Pong to now, I see myself enthusiastically engaging in a 40 hour (15 days) “action-research” marathon playing Bioshock, a video game set in a beautiful but “fallen” utopia futuristic city called Rapture, located at the bottom of the ocean. The creative storyline is based on Ayn Rand’s constructivist insights from the book The Fountainhead (1943), which unfolds in an exquisite aesthetics of a post civil war art deco decayed environment, providing the adequate atmosphere that invites me to subtly experience with full engagement a series of existential insights.
Suddenly, the quest for the victory is also the quest for my own path and identity as a player. Am I really in control of my choices in the game? Groundbreaking surprises await me throughout the path as I start knowing more about myself, my past history, and why I am really there. Boundaries between my player self and “real self” sometimes seem to disappear… Chosen by many standards as the “game of the year in 2007”, Bioshock is part of an emergent generation of “First Person” role playing video games (RPG) that bring an exquisite mix of high level of aesthetics, technological power, and a fairly amount of subjective depth (if you have the right “eyes” to see it), including “grey” moral choices that go beyond the “black and white” of good and evil. However, as expected from a contemporary best selling action and role-play game (RPG) title such as Bioshock, many aspects of the current paradigm of video game design are still at play, including violence, shootings, weapons, and blood, lots and lots of blood…
But, would that really spoil the other deeper and more positive aspects of the experience? Would that be really only a video game problem, independent of the reactions and interpretations of the player? Are video games, especially from the First Person RPG genre, “doomed” to be a just a mirror of our contemporary mainstream culture, society and entertainment? Well… yes and no, if seen from the lens of the Integral Psychology created by the contemporary philosopher Ken Wilber (2000), which can take into a more balanced account both the “dignity and disasters” of the evolution of video games and virtual reality technologies in a broader and deeper context; a perspective that accounts for many developmental variables and aspects of AQAL.
As I came to realize, the potentials for video games to promote positive and proactive influences can be especially significant at this moment in time and in the future yet to come, with a myriad of educational and developmental possibilities already being explored (see page 16), and many more still waiting to be “discovered” and “downloaded” into concrete video game manifestations.
As odd or paradoxical as it may seem, I envision video games being increasingly... more

Fishing in the stream of consciousness, researchers now can detect our intentions and predict our choices before we are aware of them ourselves. Today, in 2008, Bhutan's rapid modernization and growing population are swiftly escalating the inevitable problems of waste-management, fuel wood burning, and water conservation.
The people of Bhutan practice the oldest known form of Buddhism and believe that their strength as a people is to coexist in harmony with nature. They are aware that by harming the environment, we are in fact harming ourselves.
Bhutan is a model for sustainability and Eco-consciousness; their core Buddhist belief is their base, and today, they are consciously taking the steps to combat compromising their environment for the sake of "progress."Today, in 2008, Bhutan's rapid modernization and growing population are swiftly... more

Our video is an outlook of one of the views by Gloria Anzaldua , Rebellion. Her chapter in The Borderlands is about fighting for women’s rights, it also addresses race and ethnic issues and other ways in which people can rebel against what is thought to be normal. Our video gives examples of personal rebellion by people like Dolores Huerta, who was a spokesperson for Chicanas during the Chicano movement and also rebelled against what was thought to be a typical mother figure. Our video also gives personal examples from students in our group dealing with personal stories of their rebellions within themselves, society and their families. In our discussion, topics such as a woman’s place in the home, education, homosexuality, and different issues when dealing with race and ethnicity were covered. The video includes personal stories accompanied by photographs of rebellion from both the past and present. Our video is intended to show others the ways in which rebellion has changed people’s perspective of what is normal and expected in today’s society.

In Gloria Anzaldua's "borderlands" she speaks of a formation of a new identity known as Mestiza Consciousness. She speaks of this new third identity as a crossing over or mixture between two different groups in order to form a new creation out of Nepantla. From this racial, ideological, cultural and biological mix, an alien concious is made; a new mestiza consciousness, the consciousness of the borderlands.
This video highlights the internal struggle a mestiza faces. We tell the story of a mestiza and her journey to try and find her cultural identity. She is torn in different ways and is confused about what to take from each culture. Eventually the girl realizes that it is up to her to find and define her own identity. She takes aspects from the different cultures to create her identity and her mestiza consciousness.

Tllili Tlapalli is a Nahuatl term meaning red and black that connects the ancient homeland with contemporary artists, writers, and scholars. Tllili Tlapalli is associated with teaching, awareness, and learning through the art forms of theater and literature. Muralists such as Consuelo Mendez and Patricia Rodriguez are two prominent figures in the Mujeres Muralistas movement, whose primary goal is to educate through community artwork. The images used in the murals teach contemporary Chicano(a)s about their history, thus forming a new and stronger sense of identity.Tllili Tlapalli is a Nahuatl term meaning red and black that connects the ancient... more

The theme “Entering into the Serpent” conveys a search for a deeper meaning; the creation of a meaning toward emancipation out of oppression. Anzaldua introduces the idea of a sixth sense, referred to as La Facultad, which is the ability to identify oppression and seek a way to protect oneself from its negative effects. Due to consumerism the following scenario occurred.
Maria’s parents lost their jobs; they know monetary hardships are soon to follow. However, their sixth sense, La Facultad, pushes them to leave Mexico in order to provide their daughter with a better future. Following the family’s immigration to the United States, a twist of fate brings Maria and Britney together as college roommates. Although they know nothing of each other’s family history, irony takes place as Britney’s father played a major role in Maria’s parents’ immigration to the United States. The theme “Entering into the Serpent” conveys a search for a deeper... more

Our group concentrated on the Tlilli Tlapalli Consciousness as explained by Gloria Anzaldua’s Boderlands/La Frontera book. She portrays art as a communal activity that educates and inspires people. She criticizes the Western art tradition by stating: “Western art is always whole and always ‘in power.’ It is individual (not communal). It is ‘psychological’ in that it spins its energies between it self and its witness” (Anzaldua 90). Tlilli Tlapalli is a Nahuatl word for black and red ink, which represent writing and wisdom. This video was made by Chican@ Studies students at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). In our video, we portray different ways art is perceived in Western culture versus non-Western cultures. In the movie, the actress (Melissa) who plays Anzaldua falls asleep and has a dream about how her ancestors perceived art. They believe that art is meant to be alive, meaningful, and not enclosed in a museum. This dream frightens her at first, but then inspires her to continue her artistic work.

"In my dialog with Willis Harman, published as Biology Revisioned (North Atlantic Publishers, Berkeley 1998), I reversed the scientific story I was taught from seeing consciousness as the end product of evolution to seeing consciousness as the source of evolution. In other words, the universe, to me, is fundamentally Consciousness -- alive, aware and intelligent. This Consciousness is non-local, i.e. everywhere, and is what different cultures variously personify as God, under many names. It is also what physicists now call "zero point energy" -- the infinite energy existing at every point in space. They are discovering that it is conscious and that it non-locally records all information ever produced in the universe. This Conscious non-timespace energy is vaster than our local universe. It can and does transmute itself into electromagnetic energy, and, in turn, matter, in the creation of universes such as ours, though it can also create itself into other pure energy patterns in a myriad ways (they include angelic realms, for example, and all the "worlds" we exist in between lives, and eternally).
"This All-That-Is God Source is perceived as I-Am from the perspective of the local consciousness created in beings such as you and me, when we go into meditation, expanding our little consciousness into the Great One we are all part of. In this state we not only perceive union with God, we transcend our local selves such that we recognize ourselves as God."

Residing DEEP in the basement of a dusty university library in Edinburgh, and cached in other locations worldwide, there lies a network of small silver boxes that churn out random numbers in an endless stream.
At first glance the module in question is an unremarkable piece of equipment. Encased in metal, it contains at its heart a microchip no more complex than the ones found in modern pocket calculators.
But, according to a growing band of top scientists, this box has quite extraordinary powers. It is, they claim, the 'eye' of a machine that appears capable of peering into the future and predicting major world events.
