Researchers display evidence that iOS 4 records all your travels, again (updated)
By Vlad Savov posted Apr 20th 2011 11:03AM
If you didn't already think your smartphone knows too much about you, here's a handy reminder. A duo of UK researchers have uncovered a potentially worrying (and oddly enough, undocumented) feature in iOS 4: it asks your iPhone to record your location constantly, then timestamps that data and records it for posterity. The trouble with this unsolicited location tracking is that the hidden file that holds the data -- consolidated.db -- is relatively easy to uncover and read, making any desktops you've backed your phone up to and the phone itself even bigger privacy dangers than they would usually be. Some extra digging revealed this behavior has been known about for a good while (see Courbis link below), though mostly by people involved in computer forensics. Additionally, restoring a backup or migrating to a new device keeps the data logging going, which the researchers point to as evidence that what's happening isn't accidental. See a couple of visualizations of the extracted results on video after the break.

The pineal gland (also called the pineal body, epiphysis cerebri, epiphysis or the "third eye") is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and photoperiodic (seasonal) functions.
The pineal gland is shaped like a tiny pine cone, hence its name. The pineal gland is located near to the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where the two rounded thalamic bodies join. Unlike much of the rest of the brain, the pineal gland is not isolated from the body by the blood-brain barrier system. It is reddish-gray and about the size of a pea (8 mm in humans), located just rostro-dorsal to the superior colliculus and behind and beneath the stria medullaris, between the laterally positioned thalamic bodies. It is part of the epithalamus. It is a midline structure, and is often seen in plain skull X-rays, as it is often calcified. Calcification is typically due to intake of the fluoride found in water and toothpaste. It was the last endocrine gland to have its function discovered. Metaphysics
The pineal gland's location deep in the brain seems to intimate hidden importance. In the days before its function as a physical eye that could see beyond space-time was discovered, it was considered a mystery linked to superstition and mysticism.
Today it is associated with the sixth chakra whose awakening is linked to prophecy and and increased psychic awareness as consciousness ascends. The pineal gland, or third eye, is located in the geometric center of the brain. This correlates to the location of the Great Pyramid in the center of the physical planet. This pineal gland is activated by Light, and it controls the various bio-rhythms of the body. It works in harmony with the hypothalamus gland which directs the body's thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines our aging process. When it awakens, one feels a pressure at the base of the brain.
While the physiological function of the pineal gland has been unknown until recent times, mystical traditions and esoteric schools have long known this area in the middle of the brain to be the connecting link between the physical and spiritual worlds. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the pineal gland has always been important in initiating supernatural powers. Development of psychic talents has been closely associated with this organ of higher vision.
When awakened, the third acts as a 'stargate' that sees beyond Space-Time into Time-Space.
To activate the 'third eye' is to raise one's frequency and moving into higher consciousness - all is a consciousness experience perceived through the Eye of Time or Third Eye. Meditation, Visualization Yoga, and all forms of Out of Body travel, open the Third Eye and allow you to 'see' beyond the physical. As you practice, you will get it faster and more frequently. Your psychic abilities will increase as well as your dream time messages. You may first begin with your eyes closed, but as you practice, you will be able to open your third eye by focusing your attention and receiving messages with your physical eyes open. Planetary vibration/frequency is accelerating exponentially, allowing souls to peer into other realms far more easily than in the past. Frequency will continue to rise until consciousness evolves out of the physical in the next few years. The pineal gland corresponds with divine thought after being touched by the vibrating light of Kundalini. starts its ascent towards the head center after responding to the vibrations from the 'light in the head.' The light is located at the top of the sutratma, or 'soul thread', which passes down from the highest plane of our being into the physical vehicle. It’s one thing to read about individual Taliban attacks in WikiLeaks’ trove of war logs. It’s something quite different to see the bombings and the shootings mount, and watch the insurgency metastasize.
NYU political science grad student (and occasional Danger Room contributor) Drew Conway has done just that, using an open source statistical programming language called R and a graphical plotting software tool. The results are unnerving, like stop-motion photography of a freeway wreck. Above is the latest example: a graph showing the spread of combat from 2004 to 2009. It’s exactly what you wouldn’t want to see as a war drags on.
“The sheer volume of observations [in the WikiLeaks database] inhibit the majority of consumers from being able to gain knowledge from it. By providing graphical summaries of the data people can draw inferences quickly, which would have been very difficult to do by serially reading through the files,” Conway e-mails Danger Room. “For instance, in the most recent graph I posted [see above], many people were noticing the increasing number of attacks around Afghanistan’s ‘ring road,’ over time, and seeing that as an indication of the Taliban’s attempt to undermine the Afghanistan government by cutting off villages from one another.”
Conway’s work largely mirrors what the U.S. military’s internal teams of intelligence analysts found. But Conway and Columbia University post-doc Mike Dewar did all this work themselves, relying solely on free tools and the WikiLeaked logs. Applying statistical analysis, they found little evidence of tampering in the reports. Next month, Conway hopes, a group of New York-based R users will be able to tease out more insights from the data.
Obviously, the logs don’t tell the whole story of the war, as Danger Room has noted before. And the stats may be unduly influenced by the spread of NATO forces into different parts of the country. But for now, the most striking point to Conway was how bad things turned in 2006 and 2007. In Afghanistan’s south, for instance, there was only minimal fighting in the start of ‘06. By the end of the next year… well, see for yourself.
UPDATE: Conway’s work is just one of dozens of international efforts to turn the WikiLeaks war logs into something graphic. Visualising Data has links to some of the best, including this one:

I believe we NEED the time to connecting with our natural world, which we are PART of.
WE have spent generations creating and controlling our environment to suit the desires of our ego.
There are times when we just can't make the trip to some natural area, though we could create that visit in our minds. In considering the research done on visualization I believe having nature elements, even if only in HDTV, in our homes, buildings and even city streets would influence are minds to make that connection with nature.I believe we NEED the time to connecting with our natural world, which we are PART of.... more

I completely tuned out of the VMA broadcast on MTV last night (a friend noted on Facebook that life is too short to watch the VMAs, and personally I couldn't agree more.). I did take some time to check out a little bit of the pre-show Twitter push and Stamen/Radian6's visualization. Overall, the implementation didn't feel like it broke any new ground, but there are a few things that came out of the experience that are definitely worth noting.
Specifically, people were tweeting while they watched the show. It was practically unavoidable. Kanye's little stunt obviously spurred a considerable amount of chatter in the form of re-tweets and @replies from the usual suspects. But here's where it gets interesting. News of Kanye's onstage antics traveled so fast that mash-ups and parodies began cropping up BEFORE THE SHOW FINISHED AIRING. This one in particular is really well done: Kanye interrupts Obama.
[Side note: Current Comedy's Josh Heller discusses how the viral turnaround for memes appears to be speeding up -- pandemic anyone?]
MTV is no stranger to the social media impact on this sort of thing. Remember the Eminem vs. Brüno onslaught/stunt that made its way into people's social media streams and RSS readers the week following the MTV Movie Awards?
Buzz going into the Brüno opening weekend was white hot -- infoMania's Bryan Safi (and the world over) questioned whether Brüno would be blight or boon for the gay movement, and people flocked to the cinemas to see for themselves on opening day. But the social media wave that carried people into the theaters also seemed to play a role in the films undoing once those early viewers weighed in on Facebook and Twitter. So, if Twitter can single handedly make AND break box office, imagine what it can do across the coasts thanks to time delays? Hello, anyone smell ratings?
I'm also hearing word that MTV chopped up a "Kanye-lite" version of the show for the West Coast (still looking for confirmation on this). Either way, the online turnaround on MTV's side seems to suggest this as well. While the West Coast feed was still airing, the MTV VMA homepage had already flipped to highlight clips of Lady Gaga, Kanye, and the MJ recap.
But this time around, we weren't just seeing the usual Twitterati weigh in, music artists tweeted reactions as well. Kelly Clarkson rarely blogs, and hasn't tweeted since the "Jeff Goldblum is dead" rumors, but she posted a letter to Kanye on her personal blog that subsequently made the rounds on Twitter:
I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her…so why can’t you be?? I’m not even mad at you for being an asshole…I just pity you because you’re a sad human being.
Pink, on the other hand, made her opinion clear in well under 140 characters:
Kanye West is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me.
So here we are, it's Monday morning, and we're collectively discussing the Kanye West and Taylor Swift dust-up that occurred last night at the VMAs. (if it's any compensation, I'm listening to The Decemberists while tapping this out).
John Lichman pointed out over on the @current_movies Twitter feed, "And don't forget he's on the Jay Leno premiere tomorrow night. Not at all a coincidence." So what say you, dear Current readers? Was this just simply "Kanye being Kanye"? Or, is Twitter poised to be the new ratings booster for TV?I completely tuned out of the VMA broadcast on MTV last night (a friend noted on... more

In physical cosmology, the Big Bang is the scientific theory of how the universe emerged from a tremendously dense and hot state about 13.7 billion years ago. The Big Bang theory is based on the observed Hubble's law redshift of distant galaxies that when taken together with the cosmological principle indicate that space is expanding according to the Friedmann-Lemaitre model of general relativity. Extrapolated into the past, these observations show that the universe has expanded from a state in which all the matter and energy in the universe was at an immense temperature and density. Physicists do not widely agree on what happened before this, although general relativity predicts a gravitational singularity.
From this model, George Gamow in 1948 was able to predict, at least qualitatively, the existence of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). The CMB was discovered in the 1960s and further validated the Big Bang theory over its chief rival, the steady state theory.
History
The Big Bang theory developed from observations and theoretical considerations. Observationally, it was determined that most spiral nebulae were receding from Earth, but those who made the observation weren't aware of the cosmological implications, nor that the supposed nebulae were actually galaxies outside our own Milky Way.

This map and the data behind it were compiled by Dr. Henry Niman, a biomedical researcher in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, using technology provided by Rhiza Labs and Google. The map is compiled using data from official sources, news reports and user-contributions and updated multiple times per day.
H1N1 is not a hoax
The current strain may be mild but the true threat is its capability to spread it currently appears that h1n1 will infect about 50 % of the population.
Fortunately we are currently looking at a fatality rate of less than 1 % of those who get sick. Not bad when compared to the normal seasonal flu death rate of about 2.5%.
The true problem is if the virus mutates or even combines. The current disaster scenario is if h1n1 (swine flu) combines with h5n1 (bird flu).
H5n1 has a death rate of 60-70%. Image something that will infect 50% of the globe and kill 60% of those infected that is the true potential threat of h1n1.
That being said. The vaccine is not a cure all if the virus mutates witch it dose quite frequently the vaccine can be rendered useless. So even if the vaccine works on this strain isn’t going to save you if things get really bad.
The current idea is to stop the current virus strain now using the vaccine and reduce the chances of it having an opportunity for catastrophic mutation. This map and the data behind it were compiled by Dr. Henry Niman, a biomedical... more

"After cosmic energy releasing stones, we now have an animated cosmic energy card that apparently betters your physical and emotional self by applying visualization techniques. Research studies have show that cosmic waves generate positive thoughts, enhance concentration and immunity, and help a person stay “energetic and happy.”
Designed by Guinness Record Holder Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury, the PVC card’s green color and animation influence one’s brain and nervous system when the eyes are focused on it. Viewing the card releases hormones like endorphins and encephalin that improve the overall positivity of one’s emotional state. Not only is this visualization way more beautiful than the 80s looking fractals (though they will always be close to my heart) and technologically impressive, it's also really cool to see art being incorporated into commerce in a way that feels respectful and mutually beneficial. The visualizer had been originally posted online as "Magnetosphere" and Apple purchased it.

Here I gave the new iTunes a whirl with the song "Cotton Candy" by Depth Affect.
For those less familiar with Robert Hodgin's work, it's worth pointing out that the video you see here is generated by code in response to the musical input.

From the website:
"The streams come from webcams dispersed all over the world and are captured by a server. A fictional landscape takes form and continually evolves in function of what is capture by the cameras. While this projected landscape evolves, the viewer's image is also captured by a webcam located in the exhibition space and incorporated into the landscape one sees. In addition, a monitor allows for the consultation of ephemeral archives presenting the last 24 hours of the currently visible landscape."
