Dubai: The rash of Somali pirate attacks on ships as far out as the middle of the Indian Ocean has forced organisers of the 39,000km global Volvo Ocean Race to take unprecedented steps to protect competing yachts from attack on the open seas.
Volvo Ocean Race - 2009, Leg 9
The original plan called for six racing yachts worth an estimated $100 million (Dh367 million) to race unfettered from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi as part of the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante, Spain to Galway, Ireland.
However, after the six contenders left Cape Town port, they plotted a track for an undisclosed “safe haven port” somewhere in the Indian Ocean where the vessels will be transferred into an armed heavy lift ship and transported under armed guard to waters off Sharjah.
When lowered into Gulf waters later on, they will be less than a day’s sail from Abu Dhabi, the finish line for the second leg. It is the first time Abu Dhabi will host the race.
“This solution means we still have the exciting race finish into Abu Dhabi as always planned, while steering clear of the most dangerous waters off the Eastern African corridor,” said Knut Frostad, CEO of the race.
Volvo Ocean Race - ABN AMRO ONE
In a statement, Volvo Ocean Race said: “Once unloaded, race management will decide where exactly to re-start the race for a short competitive sprint into Abu Dhabi, which is hosting the event from December 31 to January 14. The sailors will not be on board the ship.”
To account for the unprecedented break in sailing competition, there have been changes in the way competing skippers earn points, said organisers noting that 80 per cent of Leg 2 points will be accumulated up until the safe haven port. The remaining 20 per cent of points will be won in the sprint to Abu Dhabi from Sharjah.
Attacks as of August
178 total incidents
22 total hijackings

Tsunami victim is rescued TEN MILES out to sea after clinging to roof of his obliterated house for two daysAmid the unremitting horror and devastation there came a rare story of survival.
Hiromitsu Shinkawa was found floating nearly ten miles out at sea on the roof of his house, two days after the quake struck.
As the wave approached his home city of Minamisoma on Friday, the 60-year-old and his wife took the fateful decision to return home to collect belongings.
Minutes later Mr Shinkawa was being dragged out to sea in swirling currents.
He was eventually spotted by a navy vessel searching for victims, clinging to the wreckage with one hand and waving a makeshift red flag with the other.
After being hauled on to the rescue boat, Mr Shinkawa burst into tears when he was told that his wife was still missing.

Wei Jinpeng is a fisher of dead people. He scans the river about 18 miles from Lanzhou, China, for cadavers, drags them to shore with a small boat and then charges grieving families to recover their relatives' corpses. It is a thriving business. From his perch on an overhang above the Yellow River, Wei Jinpeng pointed to a fisherman's cove below and began counting his latest catch. He stopped after six and guessed that perhaps a dozen human corpses were bobbing in the murky waters. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/24366-chinas-dark-side-body-fishing-jobWei Jinpeng is a fisher of dead people. In case you missed it, there was a paper boat sailing down the thames. Luckily it was a origami boat made by German artist Frank Bölter and not a bunch of garbage in the river merging together.
According to the article, the boat was named To The World's End and had some lightweight metal poles to hold it together. Though there is an added note saying it is not known how long the boat lasted in the cold murky waters.

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a possible missing boater after an empty yacht mysteriously washed ashore near Madeira Beach in Florida.
The search was suspended Wednesday night, Coast Guard officials said.
The empty 48-foot boat washed up on the beach about 1 p.m. Wednesday, triggering a police investigation and a Coast Guard rescue mission.
The Coast Guard sent out two rescue vessels and a helicopter but was not able to locate anybody.
Adding to the mystery is the fact that the vessel is registered to the federal government, CNN-affiliate WFTS reported.
Also when the ship came ashore the engine was still running and lights were on, witnesses told the affiliate.
The sight shocked some.
"We do not see something like this often. I have lived here since 1958 I have never seen a boat this size beached like this," Rob Klingel told the affiliate.
Danita Gainey who lives in Redington Beach which is near Madeira Beach, said the sight gave her a bad feeling.
"I do not know what to say. I can't explain it. I don't want to say anything bad. It's hard to say anything good when you see something like that," Gainey said.
Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff's office are investigating the incident and trying to track down the owner of the boat.http://usahitman.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/70-Dubai-beached-3.jpg The U.S.... more
