A daily automobile commute can be a harrowing experience. As it stands drivers only have two safe ways to converse with fellow commuters – the horn, which is almost meaningless these days, and a flurry of unmistakable hand gestures. Yep, when the horn fails those babies really get the message across. But in the digital age where we no longer talk face to face, opting instead for Skype, text, email and a variety of instant messenger services, perhaps the classic hand gestures are in need of an upgrade. Think Geek’s Drivemocion EX could be the new way we’re able to fully convey our messages of frustration and thanks to fellow drivers.

I am so excited that an all new season of SuperNews! is launching this Thursday night at 11pm!
This is a sneak peek from this week's episode. Watch as Emoticons Have Cybersex.
Don’t miss the season premiere of SuperNews! this Thursday night at 11/10 central as part of Current’s “Thursday Night Block Party.” Look forward to eight half-hour episodes where the absurdities of everyday life will be pushed beyond reality in a hilarious universe of animated characters.
This season will bring back fan favorites, including technology obsessed office workers Craig and Darren, the beleaguered Obama administration, the self-obsessed hipsters and continued scathing satires of today’s political, pop-culture, and infamous figures.
“Season two is smarter, faster and more dangerous than ever with topical cartoons about Obama’s war with right wing media, America’s obsession with Vampires and Google’s Orwellian knowledge about everything you do,” said Josh Faure-Brac, “SuperNews!” creator.

A New York Times transcript of a speech given by Abraham Lincoln appears to have the very first emoticon. Some are dismissing the winking smiley face as a typo, while others say it could have been grammatically find for that era. But could the fact that it comes after the word 'laughter' be a coincedence?

A series of punctuation marks used to convey a wink in text messages - known as an emoticon - has been trademarked in Russia, says a local businessman.
Entrepreneur Oleg Teterin said the trademark for the ;-) emoticon was granted to him by Russia's federal patent agency.
But critics doubt the trademark's legal basis as the emoticon has been in the public domain for years.
Mr Teterin said he would chase firms using the symbol without permission.
"I want to highlight that this is only directed at corporations, companies that are trying to make a profit without the permission of the trademark holder," Mr Teterin said in comments on the Russian TV channel, NTV.
"Legal use will be possible after buying an annual licence from us," he was quoted by the newspaper Kommersant as saying.A series of punctuation marks used to convey a wink in text messages - known as an... more

Despite best efforts to keep school writing assignments formal, two-thirds of teens admit in a survey that emoticons and other informal styles have crept in.
The Pew Internet and American Life Project, in a study released Thursday, also found that teens who keep blogs or use social-networking sites like Facebook or News Corp.'s MySpace have a greater tendency to slip nonstandard elements into assignments.Despite best efforts to keep school writing assignments formal, two-thirds of teens... more

"But online slang in regular schoolwork still irks educators"
are kids stupid these days??
"A study released Thursday confirmed what teachers, parents and academics have long suspected: All that instant messaging and texting that teenagers do is creeping into schoolwork. In fact, 64 percent of youngsters ages 12 to 17 have used emoticons, text shortcuts and informal language in school assignments, the survey found.
But as the teens in the imagined conversation above might say, it's really NBD: no big deal.""But online slang in regular schoolwork still irks educators"

Heddy Honigmann
Acclaimed doc maker Heddy Honigmann (Forever, 2006) goes online to investigate the virtual social lives of teenagers. For six girls with difficult lives, the Internet is a safe haven where they can be themselves without fear of being judged. They submerge themselves in a virtual world, a world that is increasingly portrayed by the media as "dangerous." But their online lives are more important to them than their "real" ones where they are often ignored by their peers or, even worse, bullied and harassed. Honigmann meets the girls first online and then in their homes, getting right to the heart of the matter: these girls are lost souls in search of contact, consolation, help, friendship and love. Online social networks are not going to disappear and Emoticons does not take a stance on whether they should. But it sensitively illustrates that there are children being alarmingly neglected by traditional social systems.

"Without sleep, the emotional centers of our brains dramatically overreact to bad experiences, research now reveals.
'When we're sleep deprived, it's really as if the brain is reverting to more primitive behavior, regressing in terms of the control humans normally have over their emotions,' researcher Matthew Walker, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, told LiveScience. "
