Kwame Opam — Remember the joy you felt climbing through the tunnels at your McDonald's PlayPlace? Yeah, me too. And I don't particularly remember getting sick. But according to Erin Carr-Jordan's independent findings, we were all playing wrist-deep in pretty gnarly bacteria. Fun!
Dr. Carr-Jordan, a professor of developmental psychology and mother of four, has spent the last few months investigating the play structures of more than fifty fast food franchises, including McDonald's, Burger King, and Chuck E. Cheese's. After sending cultures to a lab, she found evidence of "coliform, four different kinds of staph, likely meningitis and gonorrhea, and more."
Scary stuff. And her findings were from a broad swath of restaurants, from rich and poor areas. All this in spite of the fact that most companies have some kind of protocol regarding play areas. Meanwhile, food departments don't typically inspect the structures as part of the restaurant, letting the problem go unchecked.

Police still aren't sure exactly what sparked a brawl among 80 people Saturday night at Chuck E Cheese, 3489 Miller Road.
The first call came in at 8:53 p.m. concerning a fight among three teenage girls at the pizza parlor. A Genesee County Sheriff's paramedic and state troopers quickly got the fight under control, and canceled other officers headed that way to back them up.
But a few minutes later, the officers sent out a second call as the fight erupted again, and quickly turned into "a knock-down, drag-out between 75 and 80 people," said Flint Township police Sgt. Tim Jones.
*It is worth noting that a 3 year-old girl was peppersprayed during the whole mess, and that several parents have stated the police indiscriminately sprayed everyone including the younger children there.*Police still aren't sure exactly what sparked a brawl among 80 people Saturday... more

rnaber and I were chatting recently about how swell it would be if we were young again, and all our parties could be held at Chuck E. Cheese. Skeeball! That scary animatronic band of merry bears! Super crappy pizza! And, I don't know if this was unique to the Chuck E. Cheese in my hometown, but my favorite part was that the stage underneath the scary animatronic band of merry bears was actually molded like swiss cheese, and you could crawl through it like a maze.
