Stephen Jackson of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors signed a new contract last year for $8.5 million a year through the 2012 season. That’s $34 million through 4-years. Monta Ellis signed in 2008 for 6-years and $67 million. But you wouldn’t know it by listening to the conversation at yesterday’s media day.
Or maybe it’s exactly the opposite. Maybe the greed shows just a little bit too much?
Enter the controversy over Warriors newly drafted point guard Stephen Curry. In an outspoken show of defiance for any player, Ellis was quoted as saying yesterday that he can’t or, for the sake of this article, won’t play in the backcourt with Curry.
In the interest of full disclosure it should be noted that both Ellis or Jackson were picked up out of high school. Diplomacy is not -- nor has it ever been -- their game.
But there’s a certain amount of wonder in regards to the Machiavellian attitudes of the two. After all Jackson has brazenly stated – for which he was fined $25,000 – that he wants out of his contract. And Ellis has not exactly been the shining star that the Warriors hoped for when they drafted him in 2005. He’s been off and on due to injury.
But perhaps the most infuriating part is the refusal to be a member of the team. Both players have said that the Warriors can’t win -- that the ownership doesn’t know what they’re doing. But isn’t it the players that control what happens on the court? Sure, the coach has a fundamental amount of responsibility. But In this case the coach is Don Nelson, a fact which in and of itself puts the blame of a losing team squarely on Jackson and Ellis’ shoulders.
Add to the fact that Nelson is a selfless giver. He took a team that was in horrible shape and turned them into playoff winners in just one year. He didn’t have to. Neither did Nelson need to agree to work for free once his contract expires at the end of the 2011-2012 season. That’s the kind of coach he is. No money, no greed has ever been a factor.
In the end it’s about love of the game. Ellis and Jackson need to put up, shut up and play.Photo:Tony Avelar/ AP Photo

What's the first thing that pops up inside your head when you hear hip hop? If gigantic, expensive cars with chromed out bodies, jet black tints, and 22" dubs comes across your mind, your're not alone. The association of rappers to high end vehicles has become common place in the unconscious minds of today’s youth. This may be due to the exploitation of this image via commercials, movies, and music videos. As a rule of thumb, the rapper with the biggest baddest truck has to be the biggest baddest rapper. What's the first thing that pops up inside your head when you hear hip hop? If... more

The Golden State Warriors released their schedule yesterday revealing 8 national broadcasts where all except for one is on ESPN. There were a few interesting notes about the schedule, the biggest being that the schedule ends as it begins, with tough opponents. It’s many of the teams in between that the Dubs will find a much easier challenge. So get your checkbooks and credit cards ready so that you can purchase your tickets, and here are a few games you may not want to miss starting October 29th...The Golden State Warriors released their schedule yesterday revealing 8 national... more

Much controversy has risen over the past few months starting with Nelson’s benching of now former Warrior, Baron Davis in the fourth quarter of a game the Warriors needed to win. Since then, the Baron watch was in full swing and just when every Warrior fan began to feel confident that he’d return, B-Diddy pulled one of his quick fakes and bolted to L.A. to be around his Hollywood friends and work on his burgeoning movie career. Despite all of the calls for his head, Chris Mullin may have pulled off one of the best off seasons in Warriors history...Much controversy has risen over the past few months starting with Nelson’s... more

So it’s been nearly a week since the Warriors signed Andris Biedrins, and it’s given me some time to think about the team and where it’s headed. I got a letter from the DMV the the other day. I opened and read it, it said they were....
HOLY $#!^ IS THAT ANDRIS BIEDRINS??!
Sure enough, there I was, patiently awaiting my number to be called at the SF DMV to renew my license when lo and behold who strolls by but newly resigned Warriors center Andris Biedrins with fully spiked hair, a Latvia track jacket and a well fed eastern bloc bodyguard. After completing my paperwork, I went over, expressed my congrats and excitement about the what the future holds.
He shook my hand and said “Thanks. I appreciate.”
His bodyguard nodded and said “OK. No problem.”
Then I got his autograph on some available stationery.
A nice reminder that even the giants among us still need to go through the humbling process of having a horrible photo taken of themselves before getting behind the wheel.
In my case, a Honda.
In his case, a Maserati .

I guess B-Dizzle doesn't believe anymore. Sorry, Warriors fans but you had to know this was coming when he opted out of his deal. The chance to go home and play in LA with Elton Brand & the rest of the up & coming Clips was just too strong to pass up.
"Baron Davis' agent, Todd Ramasar, told The Times that they have a verbal agreement to sign with the Clippers."
Davis, a former All-Star point guard, is expected to sign a contract in the five-year, $65-million range.
"From a basketball standpoint it's always been about winning for Baron," Ramasar said. "This presented a good opportunity to do that to pair him with Chris Kaman and Elton Brand is expected back."I guess B-Dizzle doesn't believe anymore. Sorry, Warriors fans but you had to... more

Nelson
Baron
Jack
Harrington
Nelson is a genius when it comes to individual games, but his up-tempo style of basketball is the main reason the Warriors missed the playoffs. He ran the team to death; by the last month of the regular season, the team ran out of juice. This could have been remedied if Nellie had gone to the bench more often. As a Warriors fan, my biggest concern was Nellie not playing the rookie Brandon Wright. It seemed like nothing Wright did on the court affected Nellie's decision to play him or not to play him. He was a defensive force when he was in, turning people away left and right. And he could put the ball in the hoop. Buike showed he could play in crucial moments, a solid person to come off the bench. Pietrus played well toward the end of the season. CJ Watson could have also been a solid backup for Baron if he was given the chance.
Baron is a great basketball player 50% of the time. The other 50% he takes wild shots and plays too loose with the ball. If he is not shooting well, he will shoot more, until he starts to shoot better. He whines about most fouls called on him. I would like to see Baron traded for some draft picks this off-season.
Jackson is a fan favorite. Why? He has the ability to make big shots in crucial situations. He is not afraid to shoot, even if he is having an off-night. He averaged about 20 points a game, but shot the rock at a humbling 40%. He was a pure volume shooter, and that is what allowed him to score such high numbers. He could make the clutch shot, but odds are, he is why the game is close. Making a big fourth quarter shot does not take away from the fact that he had missed his previous seven.
Harrington is the opposite of consistent. He is another wild shooter who plays little defense. He is one of the Warriors big men but on any other team he would be playing SF.Nelson

We got two great teams going at it tonight for TNT's Thursday night special. The nugs and warriors both need the win and they both need the other team to loose. To many this game's winner "should" make it into the playoffs. Can Nelly ball take Golden State to another playoff run? Denver is the kind of team that I think the Warriors match up well against even though they have lost to the Nuggets twice this year.
Denver is also not running at full strength and will have to play in the Bay with a couple of fans that don't want a Warrior loss. The bookmakers are giving a five point edge to Golden State....
But who do you like in this matchup? We got two great teams going at it tonight for TNT's Thursday night special. The... more
