During a relatively unnoticed speech in early November, former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said he found it "deplorable" and "shameful" that his fellow Republicans were attacking the president for even the most trivial or well-intentioned matters.
Appearing before the Hudson Union Society to discuss his forthcoming book, "A Simple Christmas", Huckabee took umbrage with the criticism levied by some conservatives over Obama's visit to Dover Air Force base to see the coffins of returning soldiers.
When he [Barack Obama] was at Dover the other day, and went there to pay respect for soldiers, I heard a lot of people on the Right say "Aw, that's just a cheap photo-op." No, I think it was the Commander-in-Chief of our military paying respect to a dead soldier, and I'm grateful that he did that, and I was proud of him for doing that. And I think we all -- as Americans -- should give him credit for doing that.

I'm not sure what I have more contempt for. Sarah Palin's pathological lying or the people who can say with a straight face that Sarah Palin is qualified for anything other than a reality show contestant or the the Edie McClurg role in a remake of Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
What's even more alarming is the constant reporting from the cable news people this week: Sarah Palin is famous! Wow! But no one is digging into exactly why she's famous.
And that's the heart of the matter here. She's nothing more than an overrated celebudoof. She's the equivalent of an ex-reality show star that's somehow tricked enough people into believing that a convention speech and a series of embarrassing winks qualifies her to be a national political leader -- even president -- when, in fact, she's only really qualified to be famous. She's famous for being famous.

On Friday night, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) responded to the question, "Why should a woman pay more [for health insurance] than a man?" with, "Well, we're all different. Why should a smoker pay more?" Sessions, notes Politico, "runs the National Republican Congressional Committee -- which is tasked with recruiting new female candidates."
And the GOP wonders why it has trouble reaching women. Seriously.

A chief spokesman for the pro-life, far-right organization, American Family Association, has called for the purging of Muslim soldiers from military ranks in the wake of the tragic killings at Fort Hood.
"As soon as Muslims give us a foolproof way to identify their jihadis from their moderates, we'll go back to allowing them to serve."

"The British Conservative party did something astounding at its national conference last week: It spoke to its members like grown-ups. American conservatives would do well to follow suit."
More at the link. But I thought this passage was especially noteworthy:
"Note that this message of fiscal conservatism is exactly the same one that animates many conservatives in the land of the free and the home of brave, most notably in the newly fashionable Tea Party movement. Except that British conservatives are able to promote this message without calling their country's leader a socialist . . . or yelling 'You Lie!'. . . or questioning his citizenship."
Joe Wilson's outburst would be just another day at British Parliament, though."The British Conservative party did something astounding at its national conference... more

Retired General Paul Eaton, senior adviser to the National Security Network, has hit back hard at Dick Cheney a day after the former vice president criticized the Obama administration again for "dithering while America's armed forces are in danger." In a speech Wednesday night, Cheney said, "President Obama now seems afraid to make a decision, and unable to provide his commander on the ground with the troops he needs to complete his mission."
In an NSN press release, Eaton empties his chamber:
The record is clear: Dick Cheney and the Bush administration were incompetent war fighters. They ignored Afghanistan for 7 years with a crude approach to counter-insurgency warfare best illustrated by: 1. Deny it. 2. Ignore it. 3. Bomb it. While our intelligence agencies called the region the greatest threat to America, the Bush White House under-resourced our military efforts, shifted attention to Iraq, and failed to bring to justice the masterminds of September 11.
The only time Cheney and his cabal of foreign policy 'experts' have anything to say is when they feel compelled to protect this failed legacy. While President Obama is tasked with cleaning up the considerable mess they left behind, they continue to defend torture or rewrite a legacy of indifference on Afghanistan. Simply put, Mr. Cheney sees history throughout extremely myopic and partisan eyes.
Fun fact! Dick Cheney made his remarks at some sort of "Bush administration reunion" at Union Station last night. There, he received the super-prestigious "Keeper of the Flame" award and watched as beloved Bush administration felon Lewis "Scooter" Libby was honored with the "Service Before Self" award. Then, everyone had to board the Acela back to reality.

Sen Franken successfully introduced a bill that garnered bipartisan support keeping corporations from stripping employees of their rights to justice if assaulted or discriminated against. Stemming from an incident where an employee was gang raped then told she couldn't seek help outside of private arbitration as a provision of her employment the bill would eliminate this injustice.
Oddly the news here isn't the good Senator taking up a righteous cause. The actual amazing point to this story is thirty (30) Senators actually voted against - AGAINST this bill. By some statistical coincidence each and every NAY vote came from a, wait for it - Republican.Sen Franken successfully introduced a bill that garnered bipartisan support keeping... more

“Cheers erupted” at the headquarters of the conservative Weekly Standard, according to a blog post by a member of the magazine’s staff, with the headline “Obama loses! Obama loses!” Rush Limbaugh declared himself “gleeful.” “World Rejects Obama,” gloated the Drudge Report. And so on.
But more important, the episode illustrated an essential truth about the state of American politics: at this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. If Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America.

Ever since John McCain catapulted Sarah McCain onto the national stage in the summer of 2008, I've watched my lefty friends here in San Francisco threaten to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge if the former Alaska Governor ever became president.
Their standard refrain: "She's just too extreme, she's just too dumb, she's just too snarky - she's just too..too!"
Suffice to say that this crowd does not get `Sarah-Appeal' and never will. So leave it to a comedian to solve a riddle that still flummoxes liberals. During his appearance on Bill O'Reilly's Fox television show Wednesday night, Saturday Night Live alum (and now radio talk show host,) Dennis Miller, summed it up with lapidary precision.
"I'm a Palin fan, because she irritates just the right people for me," he said.
Exactamundo.
Democrats may equate the name Palin with the sound of sharp nails clawing a chalkboard but so much the better, says Miller, a show business pro who understands a thing or two about shtick and the art of pushing peoples' buttons.
"I mean, she drives the right people crazy," he told O'Reilly. "Do I think she's going to outsmart you? No. But do I think that, in some way, she has an appeal with people that practiced politicians might never have? Yes, I do."
If you judge by the numbers, there's no debate he's right about that. Palin's upcoming memoir Rogue is ranked No. 1 both on the Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble bestseller lists - and this, still a full month and a half before the book is scheduled to go on sale.
As they look to 2012, the Republicans already have a media superstar in their stable. The one caveat: Palin remains a lightening rod for controversy. So it was that after readers responded to our post reporting the advance success of Rogue, I came across a post by one person who goes by the handle "two-cats." He wrote: "Comic book, soap opera baloney is more like it. I shall not be reading anything by this woman...not interested in anything she has to say (or, rather had written for her) and it infuriates me that a ding-a-ling like her gets so much media attention."
Harsh. But in slamming Palin as an undeserving dolt, Mr. or Mrs. "Cats" (or two-cats, as the case may be) supported Miller's thesis. Palin has this knack for sending the liberal-left into knee-knocking spittle-inducing convulsions. More than any other Republican, Palin stirs passions. Most important, she has the sort of sass that attracts big crowds of true believers willing to open their wallets for her. Can you say that about the likes of Tim Pawlenty or (gasp!) Bobby Jindal? Not with a straight face.
Rogue undoubtedly will make Palin wealthy overnight. It also provides a springboard for a political comeback and a possible run to lead the party as its presidential nominee. (Just as Six Crises did for Richard Nixon.)Ever since John McCain catapulted Sarah McCain onto the national stage in the summer... more

ThEvage straw votes are in and counted at the Values Voter Summit 2009, and it’s no surprise that Former Governor of Arkansas, and 2008 Republican primary loser, Mike Huckabee ran away with a victory among the crowd of evangelicals and social conservatives.
Of the 597 votes cast, Huckabee, a 2008 Republican presidential primary loser won close to 29% of the votes with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, and U.S. Representative Mike Pence R-IN, each getting about 12%. The remaining votes were spread between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, U.S. Representative Ron Paul R-TX, and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum R-PA. Texas Governor Rick Perry asked to be removed from the balloting.
The Values Voter Summit is a gathering of the most conservative wing of evangelicals and social conservatives in the Republican Party base. Topics of discussion at conference “breakout panels” scheduled for today included “can’t miss” topics such as:
* Global Warming Hysteria
* The New Face of the “Pro Death Agenda”
* Obamacare: Rationing your life away
* Activism and Conservatism: Fit to a (Tea) Party
* Thugocracy: Fighting the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy
One other breakout panel should have been scheduled but would have undoubtedly been removed from the schedule for lack of interested participants, “Evagelical Extremism: Killing the Republican Party.”ThEvage straw votes are in and counted at the Values Voter Summit 2009, and it’s no... more
