Ron Paul, 30 years of patriotism

After Ron Paul spoke in Sparks, Nevada, earlier this month, observers took note of Mitt Romney supporters crumpling up their Romney signs and vowing to vote for Paul. It was the first time many Republican activists had ever heard Paul speak outside of the several minutes of sound bites allotted to him during televised debates.
The Paul campaign’s recent announcement that he has doubled down on its delegate strategy has made it increasingly likely that Ron Paul will appear at an increased number of state conventions this year. Republican state conventions, such as Minnesota’s this past weekend, are increasingly making their way onto Paul’s busy speaking schedule.
As an example, this weekend Paul spoke to an estimated 2,000 Republicans at the Minnesota Republican Convention in St. Cloud. Later in the convention, Republican National Committeeman Jeff Johnson spoke words of unity and praise, perhaps indicative of Paul’s ability to win the hearts and minds of the Republican Party. Recent analysis has even shown that Paul has seen his base double.
In Sparks, Paul spoke opposite Josh Romney, the son of Mitt Romney. Many a political strategist will point out, however, that a surrogate is never as effective as having the candidate himself speak. By not attending state conventions, Romney cedes ground to Paul. He also saves face. It’s unlikely that the moderate Romney will fare well at a convention next to the conservative Paul. Last week in Arizona, reports indicated that Republican activists went so far as to refer to Romney as “Obama-lite.”
With growing discontent for the moderate Romney in the Republican Party and Ron Paul surging, how much terrain can Romney risk losing to Paul? How long will it be before Romney joins Paul at state conventions, prompting impromptu debates?
Perhaps Paul’s “It’s the Delegates, Dummy” strategy of focusing on delegates and speaking at state conventions is deserving of more praise than most pundits realized. Paul may succeed at convincing Republican voters to force a head-to-head comparison alongside Mitt Romney.

The Ron Paul campaign took a playful jab at its best frenemy Mitt Romney today, touting endorsements from five of Romney's distant cousins.
In a press release this afternoon, Paul campaign spokesman Gary Howard announced that the Romney relatives — "indeed those related to fellow Presidential candidate Mitt Romney" — will all stump for Paul at Idaho caucuses on Super Tuesday.
According to the release, the endorsements are part of the Paul campaign's efforts to rally support in the Mormon community. The Romney family is prominent in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Mormon voters are expected to give Romney a winning boost in Idaho tomorrow. (The release also notes an earlier Paul endorsement from Rick Santorum's nephew John Garver.)

Conservative Fox News contributor Dick Morris is asserting that the news media “ruined” President George W. Bush’s presidency because coverage of the Iraq war was “too harsh.”
During a Wednesday morning segment with Morris, Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy pointed out that Arthur Brisbane, ombudsman for The New York Times, recently complained that the paper had been more critical of President George W. Bush while he was in office than it had been of President Barack Obama.
“It’s terrific that he said that,” Morris explained. “There are two factors that make the media liberal. One is that the reporters are liberal. But the other fact is that the media tends to react to what it last did badly. So for example, it was relatively mild toward Bush during the early years of his administration after 9/11, and then it over compensated by being too harsh during the Iraq war.”
“And then when Obama got elected they said, ‘Oh, wow. We just ruined a presidency with Bush. Maybe we’ll be nicer to Obama,’” he added. “And I think you will begin to see a bit of pendulum swing against Obama even though the media itself is liberal.”
A 2003 study by Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) found that 71 percent of guest on U.S. television news programs were pro-war, while only 3 percent were against the Iraq war — a ratio of almost 25 to 1.
A recent analysis by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that coverage of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was twice as favorable as the coverage of Obama during the primary season.

Gil Paar, a veteran living in Racine, Wisconsin, said he upset to learn on election day that he couldn’t use his Veteran Identification Card to vote.
In a video produced by the United Steelworkers, Paar explained that when he tried to vote in a school board election, he was told that his Veteran ID card was not an acceptable form of identification.
“I can use it anywhere in the United States at a V.A. hospital,” he said. “It is good enough for everything else, but it amazes me that it is not good enough to use as identification to vote. It pissed me off.”
He noted that if a veteran had a stroke, the state would take away his or her drivers license. Their only other form of identification would likely be a Veteran ID card.
Wisconsin’s voter ID law was passed by the Republican-led state legislature last year and requires voters to present a state-issued photo ID when they cast ballots in federal, state and local elections. Other photo IDs, such as college ID cards and veteran ID cards, cannot be used.
The law was blocked last month by two separate state appeals courts in Dane County, who ruled the law was unconstitutional because it abridged the right to vote.

If someone is looking for sympathy for their high student loans, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) would not be among those providing any support.
According to audio obtained by Think Progress, the congresswoman appeared on G. Gordon Libby show Friday afternoon, saying she “never borrowed a dime of money” during her time in college before lashing out at those burdened with heavy loans.
“I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that,” Foxx said. “We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that.”
Despite her disgust for high student loans, Foxx is somehow content with high mortgage notes. Think Progress reported that Foxx owed two individual notes up to $250,000.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who calls herself “a high-value target for the Democrats,” says that President Barack Obama is a “health care dictator” because his administration is mandating that all insurance plans cover contraception for women.
In a recent interview with PolitiChicks, the former Republican presidential candidate told Ann-Marie Murrell that the eventual GOP nominee would be “1000 percent” better than Obama, no matter who that person was.
“We can’t let Obama have a second term,” she warned. “Not because it’s partisan, not because it’s the Republican team versus the Democrat team, but because we are about a better America and we’re about liberty and we’re about a decent chance for the future.”
“I think the number one threat right now is that under Obamacare, we literally are seeing a change in government for the first time in 225 years,” Bachmann explained. “This is the first time that we are moving truly away from a constitutional republic — slamming the door shut on a constitutional republic — and effectively we’re becoming a dictatorship in that we don’t elect a president anymore, we elect a health care dictator, who we saw with Barack Obama with contraceptives.”
“If you look at this issue, it wasn’t just about contraceptives. It was about the fact that now the president of the United States can order all Americans to purchase a product or service against their will whether they want it or not. And he can decide which product or service will be offered and at what price. That’s unbelievable!”
Bachmann added that Obama had been “more dangerous than any other president” because of his foreign policy.
“We’re seeing a hyperkinetic level of level of terrorist activity and Barack Obama has a lot to do with that,” she said, cautioning of the threat of Iranian weaponry “penetrating our southern border.”
“Even today, the president of the United States is calling for reducing our nuclear weaponry by 80 percent,” Bachmann noted. “OK, now think of this: We have Iran, a third-world basket case, trying to nuke up.”
The Minnesota congresswoman went on to plead with viewers to give her re-election campaign the maximum contribution because she had been “the number one target of [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi to defeat.”
“I am a high-value target for the Democrats,” she remarked. “This race unfortunately will be no different. … I need all of your viewers to give the very best donation that they can give — and I think the maximum is about $2,500 per person.”

Mitt Romney’s second cousin, Park Romney, once was once a Mormon high priest, but he is now denouncing the religion as a cult.
Park told BBC recently that he left the church because “I became convinced that it’s a fraud.”
“There’s compelling evidence that the Mormon Church leaders knowingly and wilfully misrepresent the historical truth of their origins and of the church for the purpose of deceiving their members into a state of mind that renders them exploitable,” he explained.
Park points to one of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint’s foundational documents, the Book of Abraham, which church founder Joseph Smith claimed to have translated from an Egyptian scroll.
After examining the translation, British Assyriologist Dr. Archibald Henry Sayce determined that it was “difficult to deal with Joseph Smith’s impudent fraud.”
“His facsimile from the Book of Abraham No. 2 is an ordinary hypocephalus, but the hieroglyphics upon it have been copied to ignorantly that hardly one of them is correct,” Sayce wrote.
London University’s Dr. W. M. Flinders Petrie also agreed (PDF) “that there is not one single word that is true in these explanations.”
But Harvard Kennedy School Prof. Robert Putnam told BBC that the former Massachusetts governor’s religion is not often questioned in the U.S. because Americans value freedom of religion.
“It’s not something you’re supposed to talk about,” Putnam said. “Whenever the issue of Romney’s Mormonism has come to the surface, there’s been lots of condemnation across the political spectrum for raising the issue of his religion.”
“I’m not saying it’s not relevant, but it’s not talked about in polite company.”
For his part, Park claimed that the church encouraged his family to “shun” him after he began to question their tenets.
“I am alienated from my family,” Romney’s second cousin remarked. “Their doctrine, their protocol and their culture as enforced by bishops encourages the families to disassociate themselves from the apostate.”
Mormon Church elder Jeffrey Holland insisted that the church had no policy of shunning.
“We don’t use that word and we don’t know that practice,” he said. “If that is what they believe, it’s probably a good thing they leave, because we’re not a cult.”
“[I]f people want to call us a cult, you can call us a cult,” Holland added. “But we are 14 million and growing.”

A new Violence Against Women Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday evening, with all of South Carolina’s Republican congressmen voting for it, including Dist. 1’s representative, Tim Scott.
This version of VAWA (H.R. 4970) doesn’t live up to its stated purpose, however, says Bobbie Rose, who is Scott’s Democratic opponent in the 2012 election year.
The House version distinctly differs from the one passed last month in the Senate (S. 1925), which removed the obstacles many immigrants regularly encounter when reporting abuse, and extended coverage to the gay, lesbian and transgender community. S. 1925 also addressed the high levels of abuse Native American and Native Alaskan women endure in their communities, expanding their independent prosecution of domestic violence committed in their own jurisdiction.
“Rather than reauthorize a bipartisan act, the House of Representatives chose to make a very partisan statement,” Rose says. “They decided that their female constituents would be best served if a group of GOP sheep determined which woman, which mother, which wife and which daughter should receive protection and aid from our government. They, in their infinite wisdom, determined that immigrant, Native American and LGBT women should be afforded no protections at all!”A new Violence Against Women Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday... more

This is the question puzzling Paul’s friends, as well as his enemies. A recent announcement by the campaign that the anti-interventionist Congressman and presidential candidate is not spending money in the remaining primary states provoked a Drudge headline: "Paul Out." That is the GOP Establishment’s fondest wish, but the reality is that Paul is far from "out": his campaign is merely recalibrating its tactics, concentrating on getting delegates through the complicated and often arcane process of party caucuses and state conventions. In short, Paul is pursuing the very same strategy he’s been talking about since Day One of his remarkably successful campaign: harnessing the enthusiasm and discipline of his supporters to enter a basically hostile entity – the pro-war, pro-Big Government Republican party – and challenging the Powers That Be.
There has been all kinds of loose talk about a "deal" being struck with the Romneyites, an impression pushed by the "mainstream" media and other clueless individuals who know little or nothing of Ron and imagine he’s just another politician. They are wrong. There will be no endorsement of Mitt Romney, and, because of that, no quarter will be given – or is being given – to Paulians intent on embedding themselves within the Grand Old Party.
The "go local" strategy of the Paul camp has recently met with a string of high profile successes: they took over the party in Alaska, Nevada, Iowa, Minnesota, Maine, and Colorado, and their delegate count is skyrocketing. Precinct by precinct, county by county, state by state, the Ron Paul Revolution is racking up victories – and the Romneyites are in a panic. Due to that panic, they are employing hard-line tactics, often simply closing down local conventions when it becomes clear the Paulians have a majority. They cut off the microphones, call the cops, and whine that the insurgents are "disrupting" a process the party bosses have controlled for as long as anyone can remember. At one point, attendees at a state Republican convention saw the walls literally closing in on them, as Rachel Maddow reported in a segment on MSNBC.

In a party that tends to be old and white, Ron Paul and his views are attracting demographic groups that are not traditionally affiliated with the Republican Party – youth, minorities, civil libertarians, the apolitical, those who are traditionally non-voters, and even Democrats.
On May 6, Nevada Republicans announced that 22 Paul supporters were chosen to fill 25 spaces for the Republican National Convention. Recent analysis shows that of those delegates were two female delegates who identify as Hispanic and one black delegate.
One Paul supporter said about Sunday’s results: “A common critique of small-minded opponents on the left is that Paul is racist. He’s exactly the opposite – he sees everyone as an individual, the guy doesn’t give a damn about what ‘group’ we are a part of. He represents a belief in the importance of the individual – something the Republican Party used to represent.”
While Paul speaks an old message, one of freedom, it still resonates with people of all ages and is clearly attracting a new kind of energy to the stodgy, pro-establishment Republican Party.
One of the recently-elected delegates to the Republican National Convention, Wiselet Rouzard, who identifies as African American, commented, “The 15% minority delegation being sent to Tampa to

“We are absolutely not dropping out of this race! We are focusing our efforts squarely on winning delegates and party leadership positions at state conventions.”
- Jesse Benton, Campaign Chairman
Ron Paul announced today he would not be competing in the upcoming primary states, saying that he would focus, instead, on his delegate strategy. A strategy that is working, by the way, and transforming the Republican Party. It is something he has said many times since the February 11, 2012 caucus in Maine.
Only this time, the main stream media gave the announcement full attention and treated it like the end of his campaign. Drudge ran it as a front page headline “Ron Paul is out.”
It is all evidence that Alfred Harmsworth’s famous quote that “news is not when a dog bites a man but, rather, when a man bites a dog” has now been offciaily turned on its head.
For the last two years the national media has been saying that Ron Paul is out. So how could that possibly be news? One might ask, “When has the mainstream media ever thought that Ron Paul was in?”
Bracing for a Ron Paul win in Iowa, major new outlets last January announced that if he won, the Iowa Caucus, itself, would be discredited. According to the New York Times and the Associated Press, Ron Paul is still listed as the recipient of one, count em, one delegate from Iowa, a state that he now dominates.
Likewise, the fact that Ron Paul supporters took a big chunk of the delegation of Mitt Romney’s home state of Massachusetts was not big news. This was evidently not a man biting a dog. There were no headlines, just small reports saying we were “flooding” state conventions with delegates. We were sucker punching the front runner. Even this, “we were stealing delegates.” Now, that’s a trick.

Congressman Ron Paul has announced that he will no longer be using resources to campaign in primary states, instead focusing all of his efforts on delegate-selection events as he vows to continue to vie for GOP nomination for presidential candidate.
Rep. Paul (R-Texas) issued a statement on his official website on Monday announcing that he will immediately begin to concentrate on collecting delegates at state conventions in lieu of traditional campaigning in states where he will have to compete in GOP presidential primaries.
“Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process. We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that liberty is the way of the future,”reads the statement.
“Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have.”
