Occupiers target "Mayor 1% Emanuel's" anti-protest ordinance in Chicago

Occupy Rogers Park, Occupy the South Side campaign against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's NATO/G-8 ordinance; "This measure is a permanent attack on public protest in the City of Chicago."

Last month Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel introduced anti-protester legislation for the upcoming NATO and G-8 summits in Chicago.

Chicago's WBEZ reported:

"During the summits, which could draw thousands of protesters, Emanuel wants to increase the minimum fine from $25 to $200 and double the maximum fine to $1,000. His proposed ordinance would also close parks, playgrounds and beaches overnight for longer periods of time."

This past Tuesday, Emanuel clarified that these measures would in fact be permanent, and not just during the time of the summits. From WBEZ:

In fact, Emanuel said his proposal to dramatically increase fines for protesters who resist arrest - even passively - should be permanent. Some of the other sweeping powers the mayor is seeking - one would allow his office to unilaterally approve some city contracts - would expire once the May summits are over, he said.
This morning, Occupy Chicago reacted harshly to Emanuel's plan, which they call the 'Sit Down and Shut Up' ordinance. From the Occupy Chicago website:

This ordinance consists of a host of bureaucratic tools created by and for the 1% to relegate, abridge, fine, arrest, and silence our speech. It is an attempt to bully and intimidate with increased police power and fines the brave working people who demand the ability to participate democratically in the organizing of our society. It is an attempt, by the 1%, to restrict and regulate the voice of the people when it upsets the structure that put them in power. The timing of the ordinance demonstrates that it has nothing to do with public safety but that its sole purpose is to stifle the voice and trample upon the constitutional liberties of all the people of Chicago. It is the blatant criminalizing of any public assembly that does not serve the interest of the 1%. It is the handcuffing of democracy. Occupy Chicago condemns this ordinance and demands that they be revoked. Those who are on the side of the democracy of the 99% will stand with us.

This morning, Occupy the South Side and Occupy Rogers Park delivered a warning to all of the city's aldermen, indicating that if they supported the mayor's resolution, they should expext strong resistance.

Meet the anarchivists: the people documenting the Occupy movement

You’ve heard all about the Occupy Wall Street movement but did you know there’s a growing archive about it, being compiled by so-called anarchivists?

The Brooklyn Ink website has published a feature telling the story of how a growing number of people are gathering data about the Occupy protests, though this has in itself led to discussions about who will tell the definitive story.

In the article, The Brooklyn Ink meets Jeremy Bold who came up with the word anarchive to describe a leaderless library of information where power and responsibility should be evenly distributed among all the people collecting material.

However, Richard John, historian of communications and professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism fears this democratic approach could result in a directionless archive in which the message of the Occupy movement gets lost. "If you don’t believe in leaders," he says, "you might say ‘Oh my God, I have to collect everything.'"

It’s not just the Occupy protesters themselves who are documenting the movement’s progress: there are archives being compiled by the New York Historical Society and the Smithsonian Natural Museum of American History. There’s also an Activist Archivists group at the New York University’s Moving Image Archive, looking at the digital approach to gathering data.

Though the Occupy movement is only a few months old, there is a huge amount of material about it already in existence, making the job of cataloguing it a very time-consuming one – and leading some to question the value of building such an in-depth archive.

Columbia University historian and former director of the New York Historical Society Kenneth Jackson says: “My opinion is that the Occupy Wall Street archive is not that important and not worth the cost to house it for the next hundred years.”

However, current director of the New York Historical Society Jean Ashton says the organisation will continually be monitoring the Occupy movement to assess its commitment to it. “If it goes under, we have what we have,” she says. “And if it explodes, we’ll allocate more resources to it.”

As the different archives are built up, any concerns of conflicting data are unfounded for Howard Besser, of the Activist Archivists group, who is keen to gather as much material as possible. “The online museums, the museums of the future, will allow individuals to each tell a different story with the artifacts,” he says. “Everyone should be able to be a player, find interesting objects and weave a narrative thread between them.”

Hate rally against Africans in Tel Aviv caught on video as Haaretz deletes article about it

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz mysteriously removed from its website an article exposing atrocious Israeli racism against black people just hours after it was published.

The article by David Sheen – a copy of which was made by The Electronic Intifada before Haaretz deleted it – reported on a rally by Israeli Jews on Sunday in Tel Aviv against African immigrants, demanding that they be sent home because Israel is a “Jewish state.” The rally was addressed by Michael Ben-Ari, a member of the Israeli parliament from the National Union party which also favors expelling Palestinians.

The deleted article stated:

The demonstrators chanted “The people demand the expulsion of the infiltrators,” “We have come to expunge the darkness,” and “Tel Aviv is for Jews, Sudan is for Sudanese.”

Ben Ari criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu for allowing African migrants to remain in the county after they had already entered in recent years. He called Netanyahu’s cabinet “the blackest government ever for Tel Aviv.”

Shocking video of hate rally
Video taken at the rally and posted on YouTube by Sheen, shows some of the vile racism, including by Knesset member Michael Ben-Ari.

Protesters can be heard chanting such slogans as, “Sudanese to Sudan, Tel Aviv is for Jews” and “Their place is in Sudan, not here. This is a Jewish state!”

“Restrict their movements”

Ben-Ari then praised the mayor of the Red Sea port city of Eilat for his alleged harsh treatment of Africans. The mayor, Ben-Ari said, “is doing a great job with the Africans there. I only wish we did the same here in Tel Aviv. He doesn’t allow them to attend schools, he restricts their movements, he knows what to do.”

Africans ‘bad for property values’

“Disgusting! Why should my son go to school with 30 Sudanese in a class?”
