The Church of Scientology and six of its French leaders went on trial on Monday on charges of organised fraud that could lead to an outright ban on the organisation in France.
Known for its Hollywood celebrity followers Tom Cruise and John Travolta, the group is in the dock in Paris for the second time in six years, although French courts have prosecuted several individual Scientologists since 1978.
The court is hearing a complaint from two women, one of whom alleges she was manipulated into handing over 20,000 euros (28,000 US dollars) for costly Scientology products, such as an "electrometer" to measure mental energy. The Church of Scientology and six of its French leaders went on trial on Monday on... more

A Scientology spokesman has confirmed that Scientologists believe that mankind's problems stem from brainwashed alien soul remnants created millions of years ago by genocidal alien overlord Xenu. The admission follows years of attempts to dismiss the story, first leaked by defectors, as anti-church propaganda.
In an interview with KESQ News Channel 3, Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis was quizzed over the Xenu story, which leaked papers show is revealed to senior Scientologists as part of their induction to "Operating Thetan Level III". Davis at first denied the story, as he had done in the past.
However, when the KESQ reporter read from a book written by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard which refers to the Xenu story, Davis admitted that the story is authentic, albeit confidential and restricted. He then laid into KESQ reporter Nathan Baca, accusing him of "forwarding an agenda of hate".A Scientology spokesman has confirmed that Scientologists believe that mankind's... more

The Crown Prosecution Service has decided that anyone who attacks Scientology can be prosecuted under faith hate laws.
The move will for the first time provide the controversial "Church" of Scientology – described by some as a cult – the same protection as other mainstream religions.
Critics of the organisation attacked the decision last night, saying it would encourage Scientologists to push for official recognition in Britain.
It means that any alleged offenders who ‘abuse’ or ‘threaten’ the Church of Scientology can be charged under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006.
It follows the arrest last summer of a 15-year-old boy for calling Scientology a ‘dangerous cult’ during a demonstration outside the Church’s £23million headquarters in London.
Scientology, which was founded by the sci-fi author L. Ron Hubbard in the Fifties and teaches that humans are immortal spiritual beings known as Thetans, has long been accused of using dubious methods to recruit members, as well as allegations of forced abortions so female members don't have to miss work.
As far back as July 1968, it was described in Parliament by a Government Minister as an organisation that has ‘authoritarian principles and practices’ that are a ‘potential menace to the personality and wellbeing of those so deluded as to become its followers’.
More recently it was also been linked to various deaths, most famously Lisa McPherson in 1995. The "Church" also had an extensive project to infiltrate Government agencies in the United States and more than 30 countries to suppress investigations of the organization. during the 70's.
Ian Harris, founder of the Cult Information Centre, said last night: ‘Scientology has always wanted to be recognised as a religion but it doesn’t even have a God. This decision is news to me and it is frankly quite upsetting and shocking.
‘The Church of Scientology will be delighted and will want to use this to give themselves more credibility.’
A CPS spokesman said: ‘It is ultimately for the courts to decide how to interpret legislation.’The Crown Prosecution Service has decided that anyone who attacks Scientology can be... more

First of all, I know this happened last month, but I only just heard about it and this stuff's important.
Los Angeles, CA (12/01/09) - In a shocking new tactic attempting to ban peaceful protesters from picketing the Scientology compound known as "Gold Base" near Hemet, California, Scientology lawyers have obtained medical information regarding two protesters, and are using their HIV positive status in an attempt to prevent them from picketing at the location.
Attorney Graham Berry and activists "Angry Gay Pope" (AGP) and "Happy Smurf" (a former Scientologist) are openly homosexual. Scientology, which policy states that homosexuals are "low on the tone scale" and should be "disposed of quietly and without sorrow", has obtained AGP and Happy Smurf's private records and discovered that they are HIV positive.
Scientology is lobbying for the passage of a county-wide ordinance restricting protesting at "Gold Base". Scientology considers the presence of the two HIV+ men to be a threat to the well-being of the alleged 500 "church workers" at the Base, and is seeking to restrict protests in a move that may constitute an restriction on 1st Amendment rights of activists in Hemet.
This is not the first time Scientology has openly spoken out against homosexuality. At the 2008 Toronto Gay Pride Parade, Scientologists made false claims of being able to cure homosexuality.
Recently the Church of Scientology of California donated a generous sum of money to aid in the passing of Proposition 8, a law that banned marriage between homosexual couples.

"To take [a] person, and turn them into a killing machine, against their will or have them do things that are against their nature, you need something behind that. Psychiatrists employ drugs and conditioning techniques in order to change people from what they would normally be, into killing machines," added Figueroa. He also says that the leader of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden got the idea to form the terrorist group from his second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri in 1988. Then 13 years later, 19 terrorists hijacked four U.S. commercial airliners, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers, one into the The Pentagon and one into a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people.
This is not the first time the Church made false accusations for acts of violence. In October 2008, the Church falsely accused the internet protest group Anonymous of a 2007 school shooting in Finland. They accused Anonymous of being involved in the November 2007 shooting at Jokela High School, in which a man named Pekka-Eric Auvinen shot and killed nine people, including himself. The Church accused Auvinen of being part of Anonymous, and further accused the group of plotting the attack. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Finland later told Wikinews that Anonymous had nothing to do with the crime.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – The Simpsons has never been one to shy away from poking fun at organized Judeo-Christian religions. But not because Springfield's first family is aspiring to thetan level seven.
Show producers have denied any involvement with a Scientology-promoting voice mail recorded by Nancy Cartwright, who has provided the voice of Bart Simpson for 20 years, in which she advertises her current auditing level—new OT VII—and invites recipients of the message to the church's Flag World Tour event Jan. 31 in Hollywood, at which Cartwright is scheduled to speak.
But while her show might not be connected to the call, she sure didn't mind connecting her call to the show. The message begins with her saying, "Yo, what's happenin' man, this is Bart Simpson. Haha. Just kidding, don't hang up, this is Nancy Cartwright."
"It's gonna be a blast, man," she teases, sounding like Bart again, after providing the where and when...

We aren't usually much troubled by celebrities' affiliations with Scientology. Hell, Celine was a Nazi collaborator, and we still love his books. And we're not such fans of Look Who's Talking Too that Kirstie Alley's and John Travolta's religious beliefs would spoil it for us.
We do like Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson et alia, but because she's just a voice we don't have much opportunity to look at her and say, "She really believes little aliens live inside her and has given $10 million to the people who made her crazy."
That may be coming up in our heads more often, alas, since we heard this tape (found via Xenu TV) of Cartwright robo-calling for a Scientology event. It's not so much that she starts by saying, "This is Bart Simpson" -- she quickly says she's just kidding and identifies herself. But she keeps talking in the voice of Bart as she announces "I'm now auditing on New OTVII," says that she will "share my many wins" as an "auditor" at a the Hollywood Scientology event, and assures us, "It's gonna be a blast, man! (Bart laugh)" before asking us to call and confirm our attendance. It's as if we'd heard Bugs Bunny making a speech for Hamas ("Poisonally, Doc, I prefer jihad").

Scientology works. That is the message from celebs like John Travolta and Tom Cruise - who is, some say, keen on recruiting new Hollywood arrivals David and Victoria Beckham to what he calls his religion.
Others back the Church in various ways: Chief Superintendent Kevin Hurley of the City of London police helped open a new £20 million Scientology centre in London, and the authorities in the City of London have granted it cut-price rates.
But start asking questions and you see a different face of Scientology.

A Scientology spokesperson told CBS News the church doesn't get involved in medical decisions. The statement says, "Scientologists seek conventional medical treatment for medical conditions. Scientologists use prescription drugs when physically ill."
But skeptics point to the writings of the church founder.
"There are definitely some policies that L. Ron Hubbard wrote in the '60s where he was very critical of the medical profession,' says former Scientologist Bruce Hines.
