Four years ago, I wrote a dispatch for PBS’s Frontline/World about what at the time seemed to be a quaint little controversy unfolding in Denmark. Jyllands-Posten, the nation’s largest daily newspaper, had published some cartoons depicting Islam's founder and prophet, Mohammed. Images of the prophet are considered blasphemous under Islamic code, but what really pissed some Muslims off was the offensive way Mohammed was portrayed in some of the cartoons, particularly one that showed him with a bomb for a turban. The backlash was immediate, but relatively measured, at first. I reported the story three months after the cartoons had actually been published. Here’s where the controversy stood then:
There are about 200,000 Muslims in Denmark, accounting for 3 percent of the country's population. Soon after the cartoons ran, a few thousand of them took to the streets of Copenhagen in protest. But from there, the reaction snowballed to proportions that [Flemming Rose, the editor who commissioned the cartoons] never anticipated. At least 11 Muslim countries sent letters of protest to Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen. The Organization of Islamic Conferences, a body that represents 56 Muslim states, put the cartoons on the agenda at its recent summit in Saudi Arabia. And the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights appointed a group of "experts on racism" to investigate the matter. And that's just the diplomatic blowback. In Kashmir, thousands of businesses reportedly shut down for a day in early December to protest the cartoons. (A reaction that left most Danes I spoke to perplexed). And according to the Danish Foreign Ministry, the youth group of Pakistan's largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, posted an $8,000 bounty on the lives of the cartoonists.
The dispatch ran on Dec. 22, 2005 and initially received modest attention. A month and a half later, I received an email from the editors at Frontline that the story had suddenly taken off and had received more feedback than any other that had ran up until that time. The snowball was growing out of control. In early February 2006, protesters in Muslim communities around the world took to the streets. Danish Embassies in Syria, Lebanon and Iran were torched. And over 200 people were reportedly killed in demonstrations in Nigeria, Libya, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Today, a new book, “The Cartoons that Shook the World” by Brandeis University professor Jytte Klausen, explores why cartoons published in one small paper in one small country had such resounding affects across the globe. Klausen demonstrates how the angry protests weren’t exactly spontaneous, but rather a well orchestrated campaign. But the book has sparked some controversy of its own. It seems that the authoritative account of the Danish cartoons chose to omit the cartoons that sparked the controversy to begin with. “The decision rested solely on the experts’ assessments that there existed a substantial likelihood of violence that might take the lives of innocent victims,” said a statement from Yale University Press, the book’s publisher. A number of organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and American Association of University Professors accused Yale of failing to stand up for free speech. Indeed, Yale’s decision seems to be exactly the kind of self-censorship that Jyllands-Posten’s editor Flemming Rose was trying to challenge when he initially published the cartoons. Again, from the initial dispatch: It was a provocation, Rose told me. A provocation to artists, writers, translators, actors and comedians who, he believes, are intimidated when it comes to addressing issues that some Muslims might find offensive. "The point was that we have some people who submit themselves to self-censorship," Rose said. "And they are doing so not out of respect, but out of fear." Rose listed several recent incidents to illustrate his point. After the 7/7 bombings in London, the city's Tate Gallery canceled plans to exhibit John Latham's "God Is Great," which featured a Koran (along with the Bible and Talmud) for fear of offending Muslims. And the translator of a new book by Dutch politician Aayan Hirsi Ali, a vocal critic of radical Islam, requested anonymity fearing the reaction of militants. (This is perhaps understandable. Ali previously collaborated on a film about Islam with Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered on the streets of Amsterdam by a young Muslim man who claimed the film was blasphemous). But it was the complaint by a Danish childrens' author who said he couldn't find anyone to illustrate his book about Mohammed that finally led Rose to take action. Free speech, he felt, was being compromised. But Yale’s fears of a violent response are not unfounded. Obviously, there is the example of the deadly unrest of four years ago. But just this October, the FBI arrested an American man named David Coleman Headley and an associate for allegedly plotting an attack on Jyllands-Posten. Further investigation into Headley has shown that this might have been more than a crackpot scheme of some misguided radical. The FBI and Indian intelligence services now believe Headley helped plan the terror attacks in Mumbai last year. Federal prosecutors charge that Headley helped identify targets for Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terrorist group, whose two-day attack on India’s financial capital left 163 dead. Four years ago, when I pitched the dispatch, I remember discussing with the editor at Frontline whether the cartoon story was too local and whether it had any legs. We decided that at the very least the story would say something about the uneasy relationship between Europe and its growing immigrant Muslim population. I'm going to wade into potentially dangerous territory today.
In an article in the WSJ today, author Laura Meckler writes:
"Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.
Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker."
The plan is being formed by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.).
Of course, privacy advocates are concerned. Chris Calabrese, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, responds that "it is fundamentally a massive invasion of people's privacy....We're not only talking about fingerprinting every American, treating ordinary Americans like criminals in order to work. We're also talking about a card that would quickly spread from work to voting to travel to pretty much every aspect of American life that requires identification."
Exactly how is it being "treated like criminals" to provide identification to get a job? Don't we already have to provide a résumé? Don't we already provide a SSN? Don't employers already call around to verify our employment history, and sometimes perform extensive background checks?
It seems that what the ACLU is really concerned about is identifying the people who have illegally entered the country, illegally falsified identification, and illegally acquired jobs, and treating THEM like the criminals they are.
It is clear, in fact, it's indisputable, that this would require every citizen and legal resident to submit certain biometrics in order to acquire the card. And yes, to a certain extent, this card could be used "to track citizens".
But exactly how is that different from the way the government currently uses the Social Security Number today? In fact, it can be argued that the use of the Social Security Number is in direct violation of the promise by the Federal Government that the SSN would NOT be used for the purpose of identifying citizens. The original intent of the SSN was ONLY for the purpose of providing Social Security as a form of insurance.
However, Congress allowed a perversion of that intent and it morphed into the disastrous situation we have today, in which that number is used to verify an individual's identify for just about every important transaction in which he or she engages. Need a loan or credit? Show your SSN. Need a Driver's License? Show your SSN. Need a doctor's checkup? Show your SSN.
We now have a runaway problem in which organized crime is defrauding America of TRILLIONS of dollars by stealing SSNs in bulk. What's more, illegal immigrants have become some of the primary recipients of these stolen ID numbers.
And even more frightening, we are wide open to massive electoral fraud unless we get this situation under control.
So, let me ask this question: how is it any more intrusive to carry a card that is directly tied to biometric identifiers that are truly unique to the person and prevent the identifying number from being stolen and 're-purposed' by criminals? How is this different from a Social Security Card, except that it will be used for its actual intended purpose? How is it different from the use of a birth-certificate (which also can be falsified), or a Passport?
If there are privacy concerns, surely those can be handled through legislation. Why not?
In fact, there is really no reason why we could not issue a national biometric identification card {referred to as NBIDC from now on} AND solve the problems surrounding identity theft tied to the use of SSNs.
I have travelled and lived Latin America, and without exception, every country I've visited uses a national ID card, or Carnét. These are used to verify each individual's identity when requesting a bank account, credit, a passport, and yes, even before voting. To my knowledge, it has yet to become a "privacy issue" in these countries, or at least, no more so than a SSN is here in the United States.
But what are the benefits to issuing an NBIDC?
• In the battle against illegal immigration, the only entity enabled to police immigration is the Federal Government.
• Business owners who want to comply with the law and not hire illegals run the risk of a discrimination lawsuit if they ask to see proof of citizenship from anyone they suspect might be a foreigner.
• Police are constantly being sued for discrimination whenever they stop individuals whom they suspect are here illegally.
• Because drivers licenses in most states can be acquired even without being a legal citizen (either legally or illegally by easily circumventing the identification methods in place), driver's licenses are not a good preventative measure. And in many states, that's all that's required to vote, so we run the risk of non-citizens voting for who-so-ever promises the most to foreign interests or to keep the borders open so their 37 relatives can also come here--illegally.
We can't tell business owners that they "shall not" employ illegal immigrants if there is no method for them to identify legal residents.
And until the job opportunities for illegals dries up, we'll never solve that problem.
Think about the cost of continuing "business as usual".
• Massive illegal immigration provides a source of cheap labor to companies that would otherwise have to pay more to legal residents and citizens.
• It creates a debilitating drain on our social services--such as healthcare--and that cost is forwarded onto all citizens and legal residents.
• Illegal immigrants have been tied directly to many crimes, ranging from identity theft, to drug trafficking, burglaries, rapes and murders, not to mention the many thousands of automobile-related accidents costing our citizens financially and in lost loved ones.
• Our jails are beginning to overflow with illegal immigrants. In fact, it's become such a problem, many illegals receive a virtual "get out of jail free" card for their minor infractions. This means that there is a growing double standard wherein citizens are punished more harshly for their infractions while illegal immigrants are repeatedly given second, third, fourth chances.
• If we can't stop their access to jobs, the temptation will remain for them to cross our borders, which will again infuriate the citizens who in turn will push for a militarized border and the construction of costly fences and other measures to stop them.
• What would be more cost effective: A thousand mile fence, or a National ID Card?
• And there is a national security element to the discussion, as well. If we eliminate the numbers of illegal immigrants we also reduce the ability for terrorists to enter the country and hide among them. We provide a mechanism by which individuals who enter the country LEGALLY with the intention of overstaying their visas (and thus become ILLEGAL down the road) to be more easily identified and deported.
To review: The idea that an NBIDC poses some danger to "privacy" is a red-herring. To the contrary, it poses no greater threat than that already existing thanks to the abuse of the SSN, and in fact offers an opportunity to eliminate that abuse, save the economy trillions of dollars, reduce credit interest rates, secure our electoral system, and provide a mechanism by which employers and law enforcement can identify the illegals among us and deport them.
The REAL issue here is: how do we want to go about deporting millions of illegals? Or should we give the current millions "amnesty" in exchange for this problem-solver?

"First Native American Television Network to be launched soon... World Indigenous Network gives back native voice.
CORTE MADERA CA / World Indigenous Network ( WIN-Tv ) is an idea that was born into the mind of Gérard Angé two and a half years ago. He has invested over a million dollars of his own money into an innovative concept that is sure to cause much-deserved hype among Native Americans as well as non-natives.
World Indigenous Network, or Win-TV, is the first national 24-hour satellite and cable based American Indian television network. It could be up and running in less than three months after funding. The network will feature all aspects of indigenous life, including but certainly not limited to news, music, dance, sports, politics, religion, food, and tribal issues. Mr. Ange’ believes that the network will “give all indigenous peoples back a voice that was ripped away from them”.
Win-TV will feature several shows that will provide information, entertainment, and education all from a native standpoint. Some shows planned for the network include Good Morning Native America, the Native American’s version of the popular Good Morning America; Native America Talking, a Larry King-ish talk show on Native issues, All Native Sportscene, Kids Korner, the first children’s program targeted at Native American youngsters, and Medicine Wheel, a show that targets the unique health needs of indigenous people. These are only a few of many programs that will benefit viewers in all aspects of living.
Win-Com, the company’s retail division will have five separated parts: shop-at-home, eCommerce, catalog sales, merchandising, and retail outlets. These five divisions will work cumulatively to stimulate business for native people and native businesses, as well as provide marketing platforms to demonstrate native arts, crafts, and talents in a larger, more mainstream market.
Win-Com will also provide a way for non-Native Americans to receive a sincere look into native life and culture without movies, or history books. Finally, Win-Com should positively boost the company’s reputation through sales of apparel and other products that will carry the company logo.
The primary goal of Win-TV is to give Native Americans back a voice that has been long lost, although much deserved. Mr. Ange hopes to provide an “exchange between nations” through the networking of native ideas and platforms among other cultures."

A northern Mississippi school district will not be hosting a high school prom this spring after a lesbian student sought to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said the cancellation was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.
"A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it's really retaliation," McMillen told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson. Calls to McMillen by The Associated Press late Wednesday went unanswered.
School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The ACLU of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy, arguing that banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights.
Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."
The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.
"It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. "However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students."
Kristy Bennett, legal director for the ACLU of Mississippi, said the district was trying to avoid the issue.
"But that doesn't take away their legal obligations to treat all the students fairly," Bennett said. "On Constance's behalf, this is unfair to her. All she's trying to do is assert her rights."
Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It borders Pontotoc County, Miss., where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.
Anna Watson, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, was looking forward to the prom, especially since the town's only hotspot is the bowling alley, she said.
"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed — either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."
Other students are on McMillen's side.
McKenzie Chaney, 16, said she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with."
A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

The American Civil Liberties Union has never treated the Obama administration with kid gloves, but with their latest ad buy it's become increasingly clear that their patience for the continuance of some Bush-era policies has run quite thin.
"What will it be Mr. President?" the ACLU asks in a full-page New York Times advertisement published Sunday. "Change or more of the Same?" The ad also features a portrait of Obama that morphs into Bush.
The ACLU's images of the subtle transition between presidents is filtered and lacking in detail, and spans just four frames. However, it appears to be a take-off of a protest image that circulated Facebook and some progressive blogs late last year, showing a similar transition in eerie detail.

Things are really heating up in the Robbins et. al versus Lower Merion School District lawsuit, with the ACLU today issuing an Amicus brief (available in PDF) this morning, supporting the plaintiff’s request that the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania issue an immediate restraining order enjoining the school district from any further spying. Late this afternoon , an attorney for the plaintiff confirmed that an agreement was reportedly finalized to stop the monitoring while preserving evidence for the lawsuit.
Last week in Pennsylvania, student Blake Robbins and his family filed a lawsuit against Lower Merion School District, because the district allegedly used the webcams on school-issued laptops to photograph students in their homes, without the students’ knowledge or consent. Since then, a number of students have come forward saying that the green lights on their webcams were mysteriously turned on at different times while the school district itself has issued a statement claiming that they only turned on student Webcams 42 times and only to track those which were reported lost or stolen. Meanwhile the FBI is investigating the school district.
The case has set the Web buzzing about the limits of privacy in the digital age and the rights of schools who give notebook to their students to monitor what students do on them. Earlier today, we spoke with ACLU of Pennsylvania Legal Director Vic Walczak for an update on the case and with Electronic Frontier Foundation Chief Council Kevin Bankston to find out what legal protections, if any, the school may have violated and what recourse is available to the rest of us.

Dear President Obama,
The Facts below clearly show that homicide was committed to cover up criminal acts of an organized well funded covert criminal plot to commit voter fraud.
Joseph Stalin said:
“It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.”
So then why are the people behind these capital crimes and, criminal acts not been prosecuted? These people today are free to walk the streets continuing their ongoing illegal activities and acts of treason against the citizens of United States.
As voters, the citizens who voted for you voted you into office for a reason... "to correct the wrongdoings and criminal acts of the past administration." Not, to continue with the covert coverups and on going status-quo of the past eight years. We expect and, also demand more.
Today, we find ourselves at a critical turning point... Our Nation is only as great the integrity of it's laws, the fairness of our Judicial System and, as strong as the pillars of our Constitution...
As citizens, we need to realize, that our nation has reached that point where our Judicial System has been twisted, bought and subverted by large corporations to where it no longer protects the rights of "All People" as was intended by our founding fathers.
