I had to take a trip downtown the other day and started thinking about some of the jobs I used to have down in the financial district before I had my iPhone. Mobile devices don’t work in the tunnel once the train starts in past West Portal station. They barely even work inside the open air station for some reason, but more importantly it can take you 20-30 minutes to get from West Portal to the Embarcadero and you don’t have access to the outside world from the inside.I had to take a trip downtown the other day and started thinking about some of the... more

This one has been on my mind for some time and after checking the route of the 66 Quintara bus. I think it’s time to put it out of commission. It is the shortest bus route beating the old winner the 37 Corbett and runs from 30th and Vicente to 9th and Judah now. If you need to get anywhere along that route there are other buses that can serve the need in a better way. This one has been on my mind for some time and after checking the route of the 66... more

For a short period of time I had to take the 48 Quintara down to the Mission on a daily basis. I found it actually a relaxing and interesting trip that I wrote about previously as I could sit there with my iPhone and read my email and get constant updates on what was going on along with all the other riders because of the 3G access we all had, but if you like the other thousands of riders who have to take the metro downtown you're out of luck. For a short period of time I had to take the 48 Quintara down to the Mission on a... more

I have to say that most of my commute experience has involved Muni with a short 3 month stint having to drive from San Francisco to Burlingame. Of those two experiences I’d have to say the commute to Burlingame was the worst because it involved 280, 380 and 101. Commuting to Marin is much different and I learned that highway 101 has a dark and a light side, but with the opposite meanings applying.I have to say that most of my commute experience has involved Muni with a short 3... more

San Francisco is a city that as my wife once quoted a person from Maine as saying, “Ya can’t get there from here.” Traveling is a difficult task because of the central hills and Golden Gate Park that has caused our transit system to bore holes through the hills to make it easier to get to downtown. The Richmond and Sunset districts occupy approximately half of San Francisco and are divided by the Slot, or Golden Gate Park. Originally, Market street was referred to as the Slot and the SoMA region was called South of the Slot, but today Market St is more of a slit for travelers than a slot.San Francisco is a city that as my wife once quoted a person from Maine as saying,... more

Props to the Azns with titanium cojones. Standing by the door. They must be part time ninjas.
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) — A shocking video shot by a Muni passenger last Friday showed a train full of passengers being operated with the door gaping open during the ride.
On Friday night, Alex Merenkov boarded the L Taraval train during rush hour. At the Van Ness station, one of the passenger doors did not close, prompting Merenkov to record his commute.

Crazy. But I believe it ...
Story: San Francisco police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found inside a city bus that had been parked in a transit yard for hours after a rush-hour shift.
Authorities say a cleaning crew discovered the body of 37-year-old Christopher Feasel of San Francisco over the weekend. They are trying to determine whether he went unnoticed by passengers or the driver or if he broke into the yard and died in the parked bus.
Drivers are supposed to check vehicles at the end of their shifts.
Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka says investigators will check surveillance video around the bus yard. It's not clear whether cameras on the bus were working.Crazy. But I believe it ...

Check out all the disable individuals getting off of the bus. Poor people, they all have some kind of a problem and they all need a noise signal to orientate themselves. (Sorry about the cynicism, but I can not help!) I have been acoustically harassed for 7 consecutive Years.
So our Mayor wants to be the environmental Mayor? Ok! Let us see if he qualifies:
1. Our Public Transportation is the most acoustic polluted form of transport in the Bay Area and probably in the USA.
2. Our Public Traffic is brutal, uneducated and air pollution is all time high.
3. Noise is everywhere, anyone can harass anyone without further questions with beep signals, car alarms, car alarms special effects remote control door locks.
4. There are acoustic Terrorists in the Government and in the Public challenging Neighborhoods airspace everywhere.
5. Harley's and private cars with modified mufflers are free to run and speed in town at anytime; (Especially on weekends); terrorizing the whole population.
6. Every Weekend the "show down starts," quite a spectacle of combined social ignorance.
7. Many have the misconception that because we are in the City, everything goes. Just be quiet and enjoy the chaos and the crime ruling our lives until 4:00 AM!
Mr. Mayor, Looks like your qualifications are up to the task isn't?
Ps: These signals have the power to reach 150-250 feet around the perimeter invading most buildings rooms on its path. Programmed acoustic torture at its best.Check out all the disable individuals getting off of the bus. Poor people, they all... more

Turn to the Left - A lesson on Audiology
Thursday, January 24, 2008 8:06 AM CST
Now hear this
By AMIE STEFFEN, Courier Staff Writer
WATERLOO --- It's one rap song you won't be bumping out of your speakers,
because the lyrics implore you not to.
"Turn it to the Left," an educational rap penned and performed by musician
Benjamin Jackson, details the problems of kids today. But they're definitely not your typical hip-hop problems.
"It ain't no fun, man, it ain't no fun / When you're 20 years old, but your
ears are 81," Jackson rapped during a performance at the AudiologyNOW!
conference last April in Denver, Colo., the likes of which can be heard on
YouTube. "Imagine what it's like to be hearing this track / Except the words are all muffled and the beat is whack."
That's right --- "Turn it to the Left" is about turning the volume down on
your music player, and the problems that result if you don't. Produced for
the American Academy of Audiology, the rap talks about noise-induced hearing loss and is aimed at children and teens.
Normally only problematic for adults, noise-induced hearing loss, or NIHL,
now affects an estimated 5 million children across the country, according to the AAA.
Dr. Robyn Ritchey, a doctor of audiology who contracts with Covenant Medical Center, said she hadn't heard of many cases of children suffering from NIHL yet. However, "we see that more and more now, whether it be the iPods, cars with stereo systems, even some of the farm equipment now is very loud," Ritchey said.
The worst kind of headphones with regards to music players are known as "ear buds," which sit inside the ear and send music directly down the ear canal, according to Ritchey.
"It's more like sitting in the front row of a rock concert, or a jet engine; it's very damaging," she said.
Dr. Joseph Hart, an ear, nose and throat specialist with Allen Hospital in
Waterloo, recently diagnosed a 14-year-old with noise-induced hearing loss,
caused by both the use of an iPod as well as working in a garage.
"So that's what you're battling with kids --- they think they're
indestructible," Hart said. "And it's not always right away. It can be years later."
Since there are currently no surgical or medical procedures to treat NIHL,
protecting your ears becomes an important consideration.
"It's irreversible --- you can't get (your hearing) back," Ritchey said.
